Andru – your USB Charger, your Friend Posted: 07 Feb 2012 08:49 AM PST Sometimes, while I sit at my desk and toil away the hours working on my computer, I get lonely. It only stand to reason that I would enjoy the company of a friend. My perfect friend would be one that doesnt comment on my work, doesnt eat my food and wont make any noise while I’m trying to concentrate! So please welcome Andru! You probably recognize him as a little Android, but he is also a nifty little green phone charger made especially for Android phones, although of course, he will graciously charge any USB-powered device you would like to entrust him with. He comes with a micro-USB plug, but you can also use your own. Andru is only about two and a half inches tall and has movable arms and malleable little green antennae, his eyes light up to alert you to charging status (White for standby, blue for charge) and he comes with his very own stand, and cable. He doesn’t disturb, and listens quite attentively. I can also tell by his expression, Andru is incredibly non-judgemental. Andru is available for only 25 bucks at www.powerbygen.com Check out the Coolest Gadgets 2008 Gift Guides, Christmas shopping made easy. “Printing” Body Parts – The Future is Now Posted: 07 Feb 2012 07:58 AM PST It is amazing to me what technology is capable of, and everyday I learn something that makes me wonder just how close we will actually come to some of the fictitious “marvels” seen on the sci-fi movies I used to love. Space travel, whole body health scanners, robotic arms and limbs. I wish I could live an extra 100 years just to see how far progress will take us. I have to say though, I am already impressed. An 83 year old woman who was afflicted with a bone wasting disease that had claimed most of her lower jaw and left her unable to properly eat, or speak was the recipient of the very first 3-D printed jawbone. The jawbone, was made completely of a titanium powder sintered together layer by layer. (Sintering I have learned, is the process of taking a powdered substance and placing it in a mold, and heating it above its melting point.) After the lower mandible was constructed, it was coated in a biocompatible ceramic and then it was “installed” during a four-hour surgery. The woman was able to say a few words only hours later. Her new jaw is a bit heavier than her old one, but appears to be well tolerated. She was able to go home just four days later. Doctors feel as though this opens the door for the technology to allow for custom bone and joint replacements and someday It could pave the way for all kinds of 3-D printed body parts. See? Amazing. I just gotta stay alive long enough for them to be able to print me a whole new body… I’m thinking a nice mid 90′s Pamela Anderson…. source: news.discovery.com Tech Cult – We cover the latest tech news, but always with a funny twist. Nikon D800 delivers a new level of image quality Posted: 07 Feb 2012 05:30 AM PST So your compact digital camera manages to pack in a whopping 16-megapixels for each image? Well, here is news for you – the mighty DSLR will always bully the standard point-and-shoot devices into submission, and the same applies to Nikon’s latest shooter – the Nikon D800. Professionals will definitely fall head over heels in love with this, you know for sure that wedding photographers will be lining up for this puppy as soon as it is unleashed from Nikon’s stables. The D800 is a new FX-format model that delivers a mind-boggling 36.3-megapixels, and at its core is superior image quality that is equal to that achieved with medium-format digital cameras. Not only that, the D800 will also boast a number of new functions for a high level of added value, and Nikon manages to cram all of that goodness into a compact and lightweight body. Apart from the new Nikon FX-format CMOS image sensor and new EXPEED 3 image-processing engine, the D800 will also come with a new 91K-pixel RGB sensor which supports the Advanced Scene Recognition System alongside noteworthy advances in scene recognition performance. Not only that, you will find a slew of additional functions such as Multi-area mode Full HD D-Movie that enables movie recording, where you can either rely on the FX-based movie format or the DX-based movie format. Folks who want to get even more from the D800 will be pleased to hear that Nikon has plans as well to roll out the D800E, another model which delivers increased resolution for images with more dimension. Other aesthetic improvements include a viewfinder frame coverage of approximately 100% and a lightweight and durable water- and dust-resistant body. With the use of magnesium alloy for the body, it enables the camera to be as durable as the D700, while tipping the scales at 10% less. Anyone out there want to pick this up as your next shooter, hobbyist or otherwise? Cool Gift Idea: Digital Picture Frames, check out our reviews. Canon updates PowerShot range of digital cameras Posted: 07 Feb 2012 05:00 AM PST No matter how many high end cameras are released to the market, the bread and butter for most imaging companies, I would boldly presume, would be compact point-and-shoot digital cameras. After all, not everyone is able to splash out hundreds of dollars near the $1,000 mark and beyond, for a DSLR, unless you are really serious about developing your photography skill. Canon’s family of PowerShot compact digital cameras have just been updated, where the Elph 530 HS and Elph 320 HS both come with integrated Wi-Fi connectivity so that you are able to hook up to your home network, hotspot, or via an app on your iOS or Android device. Having said that, this capability would enable you to wirelessly transmit photos and videos from the cameras directly to Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, and the Canon Image Gateway online service without requiring a pesky cable – that is one less thing to bring around for sure on your travels. The iOS app should be released sometime in April, while the Android version is set to follow a month after that. The Elph 530 HS will be a 10-megapixel camera with a CMOS sensor, a 12x optical zoom lens, and a 3.2″ LCD touch screen display, coming in black and white finishes. Out later this April for $349.99 a pop, it is accompanied by its sibling, the Elph 320 HS. This will be a 16-megapixel CMOS shooter that has a 5x (24-120mm) zoom lens and a 3.2″ touch screen LCD display, coming in black, silver, red, and blue shades. You can pick this puppy up in March for $279.99. As for the other new cameras released, those will not have wireless connectivity, but apart from that, they are no slouches in the performance department either. For example, the PowerShot SX260 HS is a 20x (25-500mm) superzoom with a 12-megapixel CMOS image sensor, 1080p video recording, and a built-in GPS, letting you shoot a burst of 10 shots at 10.3 frames per second – perfect to immortalize those fast moving action moments. Out later next month at $349.99, it will be available in black, green, and red shades. For those who want something rugged, the PowerShot D20 is a 12-megapixel CMOS camera that is waterproof up to 33 feet, is shock-proof to five feet, and freeze-proof to 14°F. Arriving in May for $349.99, adventurers out there should take note! Which camera out there piques your interest? Conference Calendar – The global conference and expo finder. Posted: 07 Feb 2012 04:30 AM PST There is nothing quite like a piping hot cup of joe to kick start your day in the morning, and the bane of drinking coffee (apart from its reported side effects, of course) would be the rate at which it becomes cold – making what some deem to be a heaven-sent beverage taste like plastic (or any other kinds of unmentionable adjectives of your choice). Well, if you need your caffeine shot while you code line after line with a tight deadline to meet, make sure it is piping hot as always. You can either drink from a Thermos or a heat retaining mug, or use the £8.99 USB Cup Warmer. Definitely useful as it ensures your hot drinks remain hot – and for longer periods of time, of course. All you need to do is make sure that your computer as an available USB port, and place your cup on top of it. It will fit most cups and slim mugs, and will also have a DC to USB cable just in case you want to plug it into any available power outlet at that point in time. Just make sure it remains out of reach of children – the hot plate will obviously get hot! Conference Calendar – The global conference and expo finder. Posted: 07 Feb 2012 04:00 AM PST Since the world is getting more and more topsy turvy these days (the Arab Spring of 2011, snow that was supposed to show up in Christmas making an appearance only now, the works!), why not go with the flow by picking up the $79.95 Upside Down Helicopter? This remote controlled helicopter, as its name suggests, is capable of flying upside down. Boasting two pairs of contra-rotating coaxial main rotors that can unclip easily from each swash plate, when you invert and reattach them, the rotors will deliver a similar amount of lift as well as gyroscopic inertia to prevent it from crashing down to the ground. Heck, it will even be able to move up and down, as well as make its way left or right in mid-air. There is a switch on the infrared remote that does away with the need to reverse joystick directions or remove the horizontal tail rotor. The rechargeable battery delivers up to seven minutes of flight time, although the law of diminishing returns apply here since it will take a good 50 minutes to juice it up fully. At least it plays nice with USB charging, making it a viable option while you work at the office to take 7 minute breaks each hour with an Upside Down Helicopter to go with your upside down workplace.
