Burglar Blaster alarm puts pepper spray in a Burglar’s eye

Posted: 18 Mar 2011 05:08 PM PDT

Some of us have homes that require a security system with precision video cameras, laser-tripped alarms, and other such high-priced precautions.

Some of us would like to protect our valuables on a lower budget, which is why simpler systems have been invented. For example, there are alarms that do nothing but make a loud sound, but assume that someone else is going to call the police. If you really are worried about burglars, and don’t want to spend that much, you could buy a numeric keyboard with a few flashing LED lights. That’s about enough to make a burglar hesitate.

The Burglar Blaster is one of those medium priced alarm systems, and looks quite effective at stopping theft. When a potential thief trips this alarm, he or she will get a spray of pepper spray in the face. In fact, the 4 ounce container in this gray box is apparently good for 2,000 square feet of spray.

My Source was quick to point out a problem with this alarm system. The idea of having to clean up 2,000 square feet of pepper spray does not appeal to me either. What you better be protecting had better be in some empty room where smell doesn’t matter. Also, a burglar might be blinded by the pepper spray, but I an imagine that he or she could do a lot of damage by stumbling.

If you want to give this system a try, it costs about $600.

Hands on with the AblePlanet Sound Clarity Active Noise Canceling Headphones

Posted: 18 Mar 2011 04:44 PM PDT

There’s nothing I like more than reviewing Able Planet headphones. In my experience, they are somewhat pricey, but they are quite good.

This is because they have that Linx Audio, which has won several awards, including CES Innovations, five years in a row. The Sound Clarity Headphones have the company’s Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) for reducing background noise.

The ANC is a feature which requires batteries, but the Sound Clarity Headphones come with the 2 AAA batteries required for them. Even though the batteries are included, they are sometimes not even required as the user is pretty well bombarded by sound without the ANC engaged.

Yes, these cushion ear cups are what you need to drown out the world, and I have a hard time hearing anyone around me when these headphones are on, and that is without the ANC.

In short, I highly recommend the Sound Clarity Headphones and pretty much every other type of headphones that Able Planet puts out. Right now, they have this deal where you can get a free gift of an iPod Shuffle, iPod Touch, or iPod nano with purchase. Check that deal out here if you are interested, and the Sound Clarity Active Noise Canceling Headphones with instant gift of an 8GB iPod nano is available for $249.99 here.

These aren't your daddy's bifocals, although these emPower! eyeglasses have the same look, weight and feel of regular eyewear these babies have microchip, micro-accelerometers, and miniature batteries hidden inside the temples of the eyeglass frames.  The transparent liquid crystal layer in each lens is able to electronically change and activate the near focus lens only when needed with no moving parts and all without making a sound.

emPower! allows for seeing clearly at all distances; far, near and in between. Wearers can operate the glasses in three different modes: manual on, automatic and manual off.   emPower! is shock resistant and waterproof. One charge of the battery allows for two to three days of operation.

Hands on with the iPad Handstand

Posted: 17 Mar 2011 08:08 PM PDT

Some of you might remember when we reported on the iPad Strap. At the risk of sounding cliche, I would say that the Handstand for the iPad is the iPad Strap on crack.

Actually, it’s the iPad Strap on some type of drug that makes you spin. The iPad Strap is a good way of keeping only one hand affixed to the iPad, so it can be used like a portable presentation board. The Handstand does that, but it allows you to spin the iPad on an axis with the hub at your palm. You can watch a video of it in action after the jump.

The spinning is good for quick switch of portrait and landscape views, and the Handstand is made of a molded polyurethane that is perfect for taking abuse. All the user has to do is pop the iPad in, and all the holes are in the right place on the side. (At least for the iPad original version, I have no idea how compatible this is with an iPad 2.)

For those that want to get a grip on their iPad, this might be the product for you. It is a little more costly than the iPad Strap, but you can purchase it for yourself on the official Handstand site for $49.95.

Redakai Trading Cards – New Cartoon, Cool Game

Posted: 17 Mar 2011 07:39 PM PDT

I'm sure most of us are all too familiar with Bakugan, the wildly successful Spin Master Ltd. property. Well, the company wants to wow us again by introducing us to a brand new boys action series, Redakai: Conquer The Kairu. A co-production between Spin Master and Zodiak Kids/Marathon Media, the televised series will debut on the Cartoon Network in the U.S. in the second half of 2011.

Immediately after the series' debut, Spin Master will roll out a highly original and innovative trading card-based role-playing game. What makes it different, besides the visually fantastic stereoscopic 3-D display, is that instead of having to track damage, power upgrades, and character status in your head, when a character is attacked, you use another card to overlay a visual effect on your character's art. When they are eventually transformed, the art will be replaced entirely, but transparent layers left along the edge allow for stats and health to progress as your "animated" character continues to evolve. You simply need to stack the cards, and they do the work for you. More about the actual cartoon series after the break.

Conquer the Kairu is an animated kids adventure series starring Ky, a 15-year-old student of ancient martial arts who embarks on an incredible quest to find the Kairu, a primordial alien energy force. Helped by his friends Maya and Boomer, Ky travels the globe looking for the Kairu to protect it from his extraterrestrial teenage opponents, with the hope that one day he will  become the greatest Kairu warrior of them all – a Redakai.

The initial series will have more than 100 cards and range in price from $5.99 to $29.99 for cards, action figures and accessories. Definitely a toy to watch in 2011. Coming soon to toy and hobby stores near you.
