Holograms Coming to the Toy Deparment

What was your first impression when you saw the Princess Leia hologram in Star Wars? Seemed pretty crazy at the time. How in the world (errr galaxy far far away) did they get a 3D video to be played from a droid? It does not seem quite as crazy 35 years later. Hologram technology (a.k.a. holography) currently gets used in security (currency, drivers licenses), art, data storage and many other areas. Now it is even involved in games. Yes, games!

John Adams, experienced UK toy supplier, recently unveiled a hologram "game" at the 2013 London Toy Fair. HolograFX is described as an 'interactive entertainment show'. Download pre-recorded projection holograms through the HolograFX app. Images are then generated out of your smart phone. Yes, what R2D2 did in Star Wars your phone will be able to do with this revolutionary game. Details are still sketchy on what exactly the 'game' will consist of. It appears that some sort of set is available for you to utilize in solving the mysteries. Also, early indicators are that you will somehow be able to project your own image into a hologram. See the video above for a demo. HolograFX launches in the US and UK later this year and no price has been announced. Whatever the price may be it will probably be cheaper than making your own R2D2 to project holograms though.

Amiigo Bluetooth low-energy fitness device

Do you have trouble trying to live out the resolutions that you made when the clock struck midnight on December 31st last year? Right now, we are already in the last day of the first month of 2013, and if you have already broken your New Year's resolution(s), take heart, there are still 11 more months to make amends for your past failures. Assuming you want to focus and pay more attention to your workout sessions, perhaps it would be good if you had some kind of device to help you out here. Utah-based entrepreneurs, Amiigo, have come up with what they call the Amiigo Bluetooth low-energy fitness device, where it is touted to elevate an ordinary workout experience to the next level.

To put it in a nutshell, the Amiigo is actually a sweat-proof fitness bracelet (as it should be, considering the bucketloads of sweat that you would end up shedding whenever you indulge in a vigorous exercise session), where it is accompanied with a shoe-clip, and is "smart" enough to identify just the kind of exercise that is being performed at the moment, in addition to detailing your body's physiological response. Having picked up more than the amount required to make the Amiigo a reality on crowd-funding site Indiegogo, you can now place a pre-order for the Amiigo.

Dave Scott, co-founder of Amiigo, said, "Athletes are always working to enhance and elevate their workout experience. We wanted to develop an easy-to-use device that helps people personalize their workouts, share data, and even compete with friends. Our fitness bracelet and shoe-clip does it all, and we're confident you'll work out better and harder with it. Push yourself and be great with Amiigo."

I find it interesting that the Amiigo is able to tell the difference between running on a treadmill and using an elliptical, thanks to integrated sensors within which correlate with upper body exercises and sensors located in the shoe-clip that obviously, focuses on the lower body. These will "talk" to an iOS or Android device via Bluetooth, and the Amiigo will also be able to track heart rate, blood oxygen levels, skin temperature and amount of calories burned. Shipping of the Amiigo commences sometime in June this year.

BlackBerry Z10 is new flagship for…BlackBerry

Yes sir, the RIM (Research In Motion) company from Canada that millions have come to know (and for some, subsequently love), has changed its name to reflect the device that made them famous – BlackBerry. Yup, it will be plain BlackBerry from now on, and this morning, the Canadian company has just announced a couple of new smartphones from their stable which will of course, run on their also recently launched BlackBerry 10 operating system. The flagship model between the two would be the all-touch device known as the BlackBerry Z10.

Of course, initial impressions of the device have proved to be generally favorable, although there are concerns about the battery life (or rather, the lack of it) for the BlackBerry Z10, but perhaps things might change in the future as BlackBerry picks up the pace in time to come (assuming they have enough time to help turn the situation around for them). Just what kind of hardware does the BlackBerry Z10 pack underneath the hood when it comes to other comparable devices that hail from the Android, iOS and Windows Phone platforms?

Right now, we do know that the BlackBerry Z10 will cost $599 thereabouts as an unsubsidized smartphone in the US, while our friends living across the pond will be able to get it free on contract. Will such a deal be made available as carriers like AT&T and Sprint have already embraced the BlackBerry Z10? Only time will tell.

It tips the scales at 138 grams and measures 5.13" x 2.6" x 0.37", sporting a 4.2-inch full touchscreen LCD display at a pixel density that outdoes the iPhone 5, Google Nexus 4 and Nokia Lumia 920 – barely, at 356 ppi and carrying a resolution count of 1280 x 768 which your eyes will definitely fall in love with.

The 1,800mAh battery will be accompanied by 16GB of internal storage, which can be further expanded via a microSD memory card slot, while the back carries an 8-megapixel camera with a front-facing 2-megapixel shooter that also does High Definition video recording. A dual-core 1.5GHz processor runs proceedings from within with 2GB RAM helping it chug along. Do you think that you would make the BlackBerry Z10 plunge when it arrives?

Doctor Who Dalek R/C Watch

Doctor Who fans, listen up! Now is definitely not the time to back out from what is one of the cooler and more affordable Doctor Who merchandise. Heck, if you think that your other half might appreciate this a whole lot more compared to the umpteenth tie that you are getting him for this coming Valentine's Day, then perhaps it would bode the both of you well to pick up the $34.99 Doctor Who Dalek R/C Watch.

Other than tell the time (which some would claim that this is its secondary function), the Doctor Who Dalek R/C Watch sports a detachable mini blue-colored Dalek that when placed on a flat surface and is within range of the digital watch, it can be controlled remotely using the buttons located on your new timepiece. Whenever not in use, make sure your favorite exterminator will remain attached to the watch or to a keychain.

This does seem to be quite a novel idea, and kids might just fall for it despite us being in the iPhone age at the moment. Who knows, it might just be as popular as those calculator watches with remote control capability from Casio all those years ago?

Spaceman VFO Hand Sensor Electric RC Helicopter UFO

It's a bird! It's a plane! Nah, it is neither, but rather, chances are your neighbors and kids in the vicinity would be looking at the $14.95 Spaceman VFO Hand Sensor Electric RC Helicopter UFO. I am not quite sure just how true the claim of this being "the most advanced RC toy ever" is, but basically, it will be able to float around in a stationary manner just like that of a UFO as depicted in popular culture.

Well, the Spaceman VFO Hand Sensor Electric RC Helicopter UFO does not need you to have any kind of piloting credentials, as all you need to control it around would be the up and down movement with the IR transmitter. Of course, as its name suggests, you too, will be able to erly on the palm of your hand to control it, where placing your hand under the hovering helicopter in ‘sense mode’ will see some kind of modern day magic at work.

If you are feeling rather adventurous, then just turn off the lights when dusk falls, and you will be treated to a light show. Those who do not know that you own the Spaceman VFO Hand Sensor Electric RC Helicopter UFO might actually call the cops and say make a report of a UFO being in the neighborhood! It runs not on an alien energy source, but rather, will rely on old school AA batteries to keep it going.

Light Your Space and Be Unique

Vintage is in! Retro anything seems to attract attention. For some of us we flashback to our younger days. Others that are too young just think retro equals cool. More unique creations pop up on the market every day. Creative types seem to be looking at what many of us consider ‘old and trash bound’ and turn it into functional products, some even gadget-y. Wish I could say I was that creative!

If you are looking for a way to stand out and charge your gadgets take a look at BOSS Lamps. A creative Canadian electrician decided to put his knowledge to use in a fun way. After acquiring a variety of parts and pieces, scraps and salvage, a line of lamps with special flare have been created. BOSS Lamps offer a sort of industrial looking retro feel for a 40W bulb. The charging station versions include a socket and two USB ports to make it not only stylish, but functional. Available to ship in the US and Canada, BOSS Lamps run from $68 to $92 and are being sold directly on Etsy. So if a combo lamp/charging station makes sense for some table in your life, take a look at a more unique solution.
