PrivacyStar – Take Charge of your Phone

Posted: 19 Jun 2012 08:07 AM PDT

I changed my mobile phone number last month in order to stop the ridiculous number of unsolicited calls I was getting from people and businesses I had no desire to speak to. I hated the fact that a phone number I had for years had to be given up because of these calls. I don’t know how it happened, or even how I got on these annoying call lists in the first place, I do know that I don’t want it to ever happen again.

Check out PrivacyStar, an useful sounding smartphone solution that lets you: block calls and texts, receive call and text ID information,  lookup dreaded unknown calls or texts, file an FTC complaint, initiate a do no disturb function, and a whole lot more.

Let’s say you get a call from an unfamiliar number, you simply use the caller lookup feature to type in the number and identify the name that’s associated with it. Then you have the option to call the number back, add the person to your contacts or (best of all) report the number as a telemarketer or debt collector to the FTC directly from within the application. Doesn’t that feel nice? Simply key in the caller name, phone number and any other information you would like to include about the complaint and the data is fed directly into Consumer Sentinel, a secure database available to more than 1,800 law enforcement agencies in the U.S. and abroad for consumer protection purposes.

Unfortunately, PrivacyStar is offered for iPhone users with only limited capabilities, I’m hoping that will change someday, but the expanded features are available now for Android and Blackberry smartphone users, so take back control of your phone, won’t that feel nice? Check out a free trial at privacystar.com, $2.99 a month after that.

Mango Looft – Baby Light my Fire

Posted: 19 Jun 2012 08:05 AM PDT

Summer is here and I can smell the steak sizzling on the grill. Of course first, I had to smell the aroma of lighter fluid in the air, and feel that brief second of fear as squirt a little extra accelerant on the fire in order to get it going faster… pushing the vision of fire traveling up the stream and lighting my hands on fire, out of my mind, I persevere and I am ready to grill.

Well,I haven’t tried it, but the Mango Looft may be just the thing for a carefree summer barbecue season. This nifty little electronic fire starting gun allows you to light your fire (wood or charcoal) in 60 seconds or less, with no lighter fluid required.

The Mango Looft can also be used to speed up the heating of your fire, you know, that downtime you spend with your burgers in hand, waiting for the coals to be just the right shade of orange, while you and your family slowly starve to death.

The Looft works by blowing super heated air (1,256 F to be exact) that within 15 seconds will produce lively sparks, continuous heating of that same area will produce a roaring fire, faster, cleaner and more safely than the old way, plus your ribs won’t taste like jet fuel.

The Mango Looft is available at amazon.com for under 73 bucks and it comes equipped with a safety casing that quickly cools to the touch, a 10 foot cord, and a cool built in bottle opener. Sounds like it could work. Has anyone tried one of these, or one like it?

Remote Controlled Aerobatic Plane

Posted: 19 Jun 2012 06:30 AM PDT

How do you intend to spend your days in the summer ahead? Well, if you mentioned the word “indoors”, you might want to think twice. Why bother wasting your time in front of the TV when the perfect weather on the outside is well worth your time exploring – camping, swimming, trekking, and all of that outdoor stuff? Of course, others might prefer to settle for something more electronic – the $49.95 Remote Controlled Aerobatic Plane case in point.

This remote-controlled airplane is a device that even novice pilots will be able to handle without fumbling at the controls. After all, they are able to perform aerial loops and spins in a jiffy, thanks to the plane’s twin digital proportional-throttled engines and elevator which deliver differential-thrust turning. It can be controlled by a twin-stick, while its three-channel remote will enable pilots to gain exceptional command as they maneuver the aircraft through climbs, turns, and dives from a range of up to 500 feet away.

Since the plane is made from flexible EPP foam, it is lightweight and durable enough, capable of withstanding repeated rough landings on its built-in wheels. The internal battery is good enough for three-minute flights from a 30-minute charge, while the remote control needs half a dozen AA batteries to work.

Nokia 808 PureView smartphone ready to launch Stateside

Posted: 19 Jun 2012 05:30 AM PDT

When the Nokia 808 PureView smartphone was first announced some months back, many people were left wondering just how many megapixels can a camera cram in, especially in a smartphone device. Well, we are talking about a whopping 41-megapixels here, which is definitely far more than what we would have bargained for. Of course, do not expect the file size to be a whole lot larger, as Nokia managed to come up with some sort of algorithm which was capable of keeping the file size of photos snapped with the Nokia 808 PureView nice and small – relatively speaking, of course.

After months of waiting, at last the Nokia 808 PureView smartphone is released in the US, where this revolutionary smartphone is said to come in an unlocked form factor, not to mention unsubsidized. You will be able to get it via Amazon.com. US customers are able to pick up the Nokia 808 PureView for $699 a pop, where it will be able to play nice with a compatible SIM card from AT&T, and if you are curious enough, it will also be able to function with T-Mobile, although that would limit you to just 2G speeds.

The Nokia 808 PureView will come with a 41-megapixel sensor, which Nokia claims is their highest performance Carl Zeiss optics to date, not to mention having it accompanied by Nokia's spanking new pixel oversampling technology that gets the job done – and rightly so. With PureView technology, one is able to capture typically sized shots, where the camera can then rely on oversampling to merge with up to seven pixels into a single "pure" pixel, hence doing away with the visual noise that is more often than not discovered on other mobile phone cameras. In blind tests performed by GSMarena readers, the Nokia 808 PureView smartphone is more than ready to hold its own against the competitors.

Any takers?

Microsoft Surface tablet might change the landscape of computing

Posted: 19 Jun 2012 05:00 AM PDT

Microsoft had always been synonymous with the world of software, what with their Windows operating system being the hallmark achievement of the company. However, software is not the only thing that they produce, but also hardware – remember the original 2-button mouse from Microsoft that looked just like a brick? How about back in 2001, when they introduced the world to their own console, the Xbox, which proved to be quite the hit – arriving in its current generation as the Xbox 360?

Well, fast forward to the current day, and you know for sure that the world has changed. Computing is no longer relegated to just being tethered to your desk as a cubicle servant ala Dilbert, as there is also the widespread availability of smartphones and tablet devices. Microsoft sees the future in tablets – but do not want to ditch their desktop roots, which is why they have ended up with the Microsoft Surface tablet which will come in two flavors – one that caters to the general masses, while the other is a Pro version.

Surface was specially designed to be able to make that seamless transition between consumption and creation, without running into a compromise. It is said to be able to offer the power of amazing software with Windows, while introducing the feel of premium hardware in a single, exciting experience. Specially conceived, designed, and engineered by Microsoft employees, the new Surface tablet is definitely a beauty to behold, where it offers a full sized USB port (which is always a good thing), and a 16:9 aspect ratio display for its 10″ display, making it the industry standard for HD resolution – at least for now.

The edges have been angled at 22 degrees, which places it in a natural position for the PC at rest or in active use, allowing the PC to fade into the background as the software goes around to get the job done. Not only that, the material of choice for the Surface’s case would be VaporMg, where it was specially developed using a unique approach known as VaporMg (pronounced Vapor-Mag, hence the name), which is actually a combination of material selection and process to mold metal and deposit particles, resulting in a finish that is somewhat akin to a luxury watch.
