Verilux CleanWave Sanitizing Vacuum – Because your bed isn’t as clean as you think Posted: 17 Nov 2010 06:57 AM PST ewww, if you only knew the kinds of things living on all your stuff. I remember watching a TV show where some scientist magnified the invisible debris found on a moderately used mattress, out from underneath the sheets and a mattress pad. Suffice it to say, I didn't sleep for a week. I'll spare you the details, but you might be interested in what follows. The CleanWave Sanitizing Vacuum, is an Anti-allergenic UVC Sanitizing Vacuum that utilizes ultraviolet light to eradicate allergens, dust mites, flea eggs and bacteria as it cleans and sterilizes your bed and upholstery. Robotic Velociraptor – Steven Spielberg gets no royalties Posted: 17 Nov 2010 05:30 AM PST Remember when you first watched Jurassic Park in the theatres, and was mesmerized at how Steven Spielberg held everything together without that much CGI compared to today? Well, the velociraptor certainly brought chills down my spine, which would make me approach this Robotic Velociraptor with a little bit of apprehension. At least I can always kick this around if it ever goes violent on me, since it is a whole lot smaller compared to the real deal. In the velociraptor’s snout lies an infrared sensor which enables it to detect movement or objects. The moment it is locked onto its “prey,” the dinosaur will then charge forward with feral howls and dervish-like spins. Should you choose to close its jaws by hand, it will remain tames but for a while, and if held closed for too long, it will start to whimper angrily. Want to enrage it like the Hulk? Just double-clicking its jaws and you will see tooth-filled jaws make a menace of itself. Powered by a quartet of AA and a trio of AAA batteries, the Robotic Velociraptor would make for a decent Christmas present for $49.95. Cool Gift Idea: Digital Picture Frames, check out our reviews. Pillow Remote Control for the real lazy Posted: 17 Nov 2010 05:00 AM PST Hmmm, let’s say that creditors have knocked on your doors for the umpteenth time, and they decided to take nearly everything you own so that your debt can be paid off. You of course, did the best bargaining act of your life to make sure your flat screen TV stays with you, never mind the fact that they have already taken away your couch, leaving you with the cold, hard floor to sit on while you get your daily TV fix. What are you to do in such a case? If you happen to have $29.95 lying around in your pockets, then you might want to consider Brookstone’s universal remote control pillow for your home. At least while you’re not using it to flip channels and control the volume with its sewn-in fabric buttons, you can always get some shuteye without leaving your head on the cold, hard floor. Powered by a couple of AAA batteries, this is one interesting conversation starter to have in your home – of course, you would have far more colorful stories to tell if you’re already on the verge of bankruptcy. Sanyo readies new generation of eneloops Posted: 17 Nov 2010 04:30 AM PST Anyone who has had experience with childrens’ toys that require batteries to run would be all too familiar with the name eneloop if they’re budget conscious and have a heart for the environment. Why? Sanyo’s eneloop batteries have long been the standard for rechargeables that are ready to rock the moment they’re unboxed, and can be recharged over and over again for umpteen years before you spend more money for a new pack. Well, Sanyo isn’t a company that rests on their laurels, which is why they have come up with a new generation of eneloops which will come in AA and AAA sizes. We shall look at the changes in the extended post, eh? First of all, these updated eneloops will see changes made within, although the exterior would just be cosmetic improvements. What’s more important, after all, would be the inside, and these rechargeable batteries have been augmented with the ability to charge approximately 500 more times compared to its predecessors. Since they are already charged and ready to use, they can maintain approximately 75% of their charge up to three years, which is another first in the industry. The new eneloop 1500-cycle batteries can be picked up from Costco Stores throughout the US, where the combo-pack will sport the 4-position charger, eight AA batteries and four AAA batteries for $25.99. The ones that Costco offers will come in two shades of blue and two shades of green, and the whole point behind those colors would be to make them easier to “pair” the batteries in devices and in the charger. Of course, I found a simple workaround for this “problem” in the past by purchasing colored stickers and pairing them up this way. Boy, did I wish that eneloops were around back in the days when my first generation Game Boy devoured far more batteries than I expected as I earned my gaming stripes on that platform. QNAP Systems has more budget-friendly Turbo NAS servers Posted: 17 Nov 2010 04:00 AM PST QNAP Systems knows that times are hard, so the company has done its part to make sure that you get the best bang for your buck whenever you are looking for some Network Attached Storage capability (NAS), and this time around they have your bank balance in mind with their latest TS-x19P+ range of Turbo NAS servers which will primarily target home and SOHO users. These new models in the range will take advantage of Marvell’s new 1.6GHz embedded processor while throwing in 512MB of DDR3 memory and Gigabit LAN ports, capable of hitting transfer rates that exceed 100MB/sec while delivering a unique blend of performance and features without breaking the bank. Among the new models would include the 1-drive TS-119P+, 2-drive TS-219P+ and 4-drive TS-419P+. Depending on the model you choose to bring home, you are able to enjoy up to 8TB of networked storage, where the TS-x19P+ series NAS servers will bring together an attractive industrial design, outstanding performance, consumer-friendly features, and most important of all, legendary QNAP quality and reliability. Just in case you were wondering whether NAS servers are something essential or not, do bear in mind that they are becoming a popular addition to both home and SOHO networks as they have a dual role – helping you share digital pictures, music, and videos among computers in the home without having to manually transporting them over via a USB drive, and works as an automatic backup for your connected computers as well. Of course, with 8TB of storage space, a house full of teenagers wouldn’t find it too difficult to fill up in time, so that might be something you want to look into if you’re an avid downloader of files. Having said that, QNAP’s new TS-x19P+ models are a snap to hook up to an existing home network, delivering easy file sharing between PCs, Macs, Linux, and UNIX-based computers. With the integrated UPnP media server (TwonkyMedia) feature of the TS-x19P+ series, it is also full well capable of supporting a wide range of media players including the Sony PS3 and Microsoft Xbox 360 gaming consoles, coupled with High-Definition media players (which are compatible with NFS, of course). Expect the new TS-x19P+ Series Turbo NAS servers to be available from the beginning of November onwards if you’re interested. Nanoparticles can illuminate certain trees Posted: 16 Nov 2010 08:29 PM PST And in other news, NASA has finally found life on other planets. Judging from our high-resolution photos, we can see that they have similar buildings and automobiles, but their trees glow red at night. Seriously, this is Earth. Specifically, it is Taiwan’s National Cheng Kung University, and it was recently discovered that adding gold nanoparticles to the leaves of this tree, known as Bacopa caroliniana, will cause the chlorophyll to glow red. Dr. Ye-Hsun Su believes that his recent discovery could do a lot to help the environment. After all, a lot of streetlights at night lead to a huge electricity bill. If it is cheaper to coat some trees with a substance to make them glow at night, then we can reduce our nightly illumination bill by a substantial fraction. Of course, I’m not certain how well this will work. I don’t know anything about Bacopa caroliniana, but unless it is able to grow quickly and on any terrain, the “tree streetlight” plan would take years to develop. If nothing else, you got a way to make certain that trees are prepared for the holidays. Other than that season, there really isn’t a way to avoid their weird eerie glow.
