LEDs on bike spokes

Posted: 26 May 2010 04:34 PM PDT

I’m not certain what the technology is that uses fast moving LEDs to create messages, but I have seen it a lot on novelty gadgets. I remember walking into a gadget shop and seeing this thing that could wave a flag-like thing, and I could see words being displayed.

I suppose it was an obvious move to apply this moving LED technology to bicycle wheels. If the bike wheel is stationary, all you will see is a bunch of glowing LEDs that blink with no real pattern. However, once this bike goes spinning, you will see all kinds of pictures and animations.

You can click on my Source to see the video of the LED lights on bike wheels for yourself. The animation is about the same as those of neon lights, but it is good enough to get an advertising message across. I wonder if this is the purpose of this device.

This technology was developed by Japan’s Suns and Moon Laboratory, and it was shown off at the Tokyo Make Meeting last weekend. You can see the words “Make: Tokyo” on the wheel itself, no doubt made just for this occasion.

This LED system runs on batteries, and not the kinetic motion generated by the rider itself. It also costs about $165, and I have no information as to how to program your bike LEDs to send the right message.

The YEE Flying concept car: So this is love

Posted: 26 May 2010 04:14 PM PDT

I’ve been seeing this image on many a tech blog this morning. Everything that I have read about the YEE car that transforms into a plane is always so negative.

Most people say that it is just too good to be true, and for that I will have to agree. Then again, I’m sure that people in Da Vinci’s time thought that airplanes and helicopters would never be made.

In other words, do not doubt cool concept technology like this. Don’t assume that there is some jerk in charge of new technology who will never approve of it because this person is satisfied with the technology that we already have.

So I will give my kudos to Pan Jiazhi, Zhu Wenxi, and Lai Zexin at the Department of Industrial Design in School of Mechanical and Automotive Engineering, China. You guys dared to dream, and I am very pleased with what you have come up with.

Don’t worry, we will one day live in an era of flying cars. I mean, I’ve seen Back to the Future II, and we have flying cars by 2015. We also have hoverboards, shoes with laces that tie themselves, jackets that adjust to your size, and, what we really want, the abolishing of all lawyers.

Introducing Muon, the mood car. Seriously.

Posted: 26 May 2010 04:02 PM PDT

This is an unusual concept car by designer Taeho Yoon. Not only does it have that unusual framework, but the Muon car can actually sense how you are feeling.

That’s right, this is the Muon mood car. According to my source, it is a car that is in tune with the driver. For example, if someone gets behind the wheel, it can detect their pulse and check your pupils. Let’s say that the driver’s pulse and eyes indicate depression. The car compensates by playing the driver’s favorite type of music.

This is just the beginning. Let’s say it is freezing cold in the morning, then the Muon will automatically turn on the seat heater.

I suppose that there will be a lot of presets and programs that will take some time for the user to set, but I think this is just a symptom of how technology can really be used to help us out, when we really need it the most.

I have no doubt that systems like these will be showing up in very expensive luxury cars. Heck, I can already see the ads for them. As for the design of the Muon itself, I just can’t see just driving things like that in my lifetime. I could be wrong, though.

Blow Up Laptop Lilo

Posted: 26 May 2010 03:29 PM PDT

Instead of getting a fancy pants laptop stand that won’t exactly easily fit into the smaller laptop cases, get this classy blow-up one.  Everything is much more high class when it requires for you to blow it up.  Don’t worry, despite the cheap materials, it wont’ start melting down the second your laptop starts getting the slightest bit warm.

It’s made out of heat resistant material non-slip PVC.  The whole thing can handle up to 176 degrees Fahrenheit or 80 degrees Celsius.  It includes a handy little travel pouch and will require you to pump out a bit of air every single time you want to use it.  You can purchase it for $16.99 through Perpetual Kid.

Flexible Map Light

Posted: 26 May 2010 02:43 PM PDT

Taking a long road trip when your eyes are tired can make the navigator’s job a little difficult.  After all the driver doesn’t need a light distracting them from the task at hand, but someone has to guide things along.  There are those cases when despite that I own a GPS unit, I prefer to drag out the map.  Thankfully there is now a light that won’t bother the driver quite as much as the extremely bright overhead lights.

This light just pops into your car’s cigarette lighter like every other gadget meant to be used in your car.  The staff of the light is very bendable, so you can get the proper angle that won’t disturb the driver.  You could also use it for when you need to search for something that you’ve dropped or just want to be able to read a book.  You can purchase the 12V Flexible Map Light for $14.95 through Seventh Avenue.

Color Changing Sprinkler

Posted: 26 May 2010 12:23 PM PDT

Sprinklers are always great fun, sure they have their practical uses, but that’s not where their usefulness ends.  On a treacherously hot day you can always go out with the kids and play in the sprinkler, should you not be blessed with a nearby pool.  Of course these sprinklers add a little more fun to the mix, these have bright lights that will change colors throughout the night.

They say this will even look great during the daytime.  To use it you just hook it up to your average garden hose and the hydraulic power turns on the light.  Then it’ll just filter through purple, blue, yellow, green, pink and orange.  You can purchase one of these for $24.98 through The Lighter Side.

Pocket Rouge O2 Electronic Wine Breather

Posted: 26 May 2010 06:30 AM PDT

We’ve seen the Rouge O2 Electronic Wine Breather in the past, and here’s a more portable version of it, aptly named Pocket Rouge O2 Electronic Wine Breather. Retailing for £24.99 a pop, this device will fit into your pocket easily being roughly the same size as a chunky pen, where you can pop it into your wine glass after pouring some fine wine into it, press the button and leave it on for half a minute with a little bit of swish here and there. Once 30 seconds are up, remove it and your wine will be noticeably aerated and ready for drinking. Once you’re done, just rinse it off by doing the same thing in water to get it ready for the next glass. Sounds like too much work? Well, it beats having to swirl it with your hand all night long, eh? It will be powered by LR1 batteries so make sure you have some spares around if you know that you’re going to have a particularly great time that night.

LocateTV online programming guide

Posted: 26 May 2010 06:00 AM PDT

You know that watching TV is a big deal with Americans, as evident by Google entering the TV market with Google TV, and here’s the LocateTV online programming guide that might just make your TV surfin’ life a whole lot easier. This unique online programming guide offers schedules for traditional TV, online television content, and even TV shows that are on DVD – now how about that! Too bad it doesn’t do Blu-ray shows just yet, but we guess it is a matter of time as the adoption rate for the format picks up. Basically, LocateTV can be considered to be a one-stop-shop to watch what you want, where you want, and it will have to do at least until Google TV arrives on the scene (which isn’t too far off by the way). Apart from searching by show or movie title, you can also widen it to sporting event, genre and celebrity. Which do you think will trump in the end, or will they each have their own niche market?

Samsung Rugby II heading for AT&T

Posted: 25 May 2010 07:45 PM PDT

AT&T and Samsung have teamed up this time round, allowing the top cellphone provider in the U.S. to release the Samsung Rugby II. What makes the Samsung Rugby II so special, you ask? Well, it is a next generation Push to Talk device that certainly lives up to its namesake of a rough and tumble sports, boasting a durable, military-grade design which is touted to withstand up to the harshest of elements. This will be an AT&T exclusive offer, so you won’t be able to find it anywhere else with other mobile carriers. Just because it is tough, that doesn’t mean the Samsung Rugby II will lose out in terms of specifications and features, not when it will play nice with AT&T’s High Speed Packet Access (HSPA) 7.2 Mbps technology that offers a much faster speed compared to traditional 3G connections.

The Rugby II will come in only one color, which is unfortunate if you are hoping to get a bevy of shades. You will have to settle for a grey, rugged clamshell design, where it will feature improved noise suppression and an external speaker making it easier to communicate regardless of the environment. Not only that, the Rugby II has also been certified to military standard MIL-STD-810G to withstand dust, shock, vibration, rain, humidity, solar radiation, altitude and temperature extremes, making it more than the ideal handset for use even in the toughest of environments – one that the pansy iPhone would have cried, “Mommy!” a long time ago. Thanks to the inclusion of advanced aGPS capabilities, users can stay on the right track using AT&T Navigator that will guide you to your destination using voice cues as well as visual turn-by-turn GPS driving directions, complete with automatic reroute, full-color maps, and real-time traffic alerts, as well as AT&T Family Map that will certainly give parents some sense of peace since it can track a child’s location from a PC or cellphone, and is able to request location updates at any time.

The Samsung Rugby II will retail for a relatively affordable $129.99 after a $50 mail-in rebate, where you will need to tie your soul down to AT&T for a couple of years. Perhaps when you’re done with it, you can always look out for the iPhone 5G?

faceVsion Technology offers TouchCam N1 720p HD videocam

Posted: 25 May 2010 07:08 PM PDT

faceVsion Technology from the US is a name synonymous with HD video communication products that target the consumer and business niche markets, and has just announced that the long awaited TouchCam N1 720p HD Videocam is finally out, where it was first demonstrated to the masses at CES 2010 which was held in Las Vegas earlier this year. The faceVsion TouchCam N1 is very different from all of the other “HD” webcams in the market, since this is the first of its kind to achieve Skype certification, where it is full well capable of streaming full screen, 720p HD video content over the Internet courtesy of integrated H.264 video encoding. Not only that, the TouchCam N1 also sports an extremely wide 78-degree field of view lens as well as dual integrated microphones which are able to deliver a video call experience that is so real, you would feel as though you were there yourself.

It is said that the video call experience is extremely realistic, and this time round the boundaries of time, space and distance doesn’t really matter, being heads and shoulders above what a standard VGA webcam offers, where most folks only see a person’s head and shoulders at most. The inclusion of ultra sensitive dual microphones will transmit crystal clear audio even if you are several feet away. Apart from that, businesses are said to be able to get more done since transportation and accommodation costs for executives can be cut down as HD video meetings are held – make sure you don’t wear just the top half of your business suit then lest you literally get caught with your pants down due to the super wide angle lens! It will require Skype 4.2 or higher to work, and will retail for $119 a pop. Any takers? What are some of the other webcams that you swear by?
