Heart USB Charger

Posted: 26 Apr 2010 05:36 PM PDT

If only we could use the power of love to charge all of our gadets.  Then we could make sure that all of our gadgets were powered sickening sweetly.  Sadly this is only going to work with your very small gadgets like your cellphone and various brands of MP3 players.  The power of love just isn’t nearly strong enough to handle the big time gadgets.

Sometimes it still amazes me how many heart-shaped gadgets come out of Japan, but if you like that sort of thing then that’s not necessarily a bad thing.  These hearts come in 3 different colors, bright red, light pink and a darker pink.  Any gadgets of yours that are able to charge through a USB port will work with this little heart.  To pick one up it’ll cost you ¥2,950.00 or about $31 through Geek Stuff 4U.

Dream Machine Offers Under Bed Storage

Posted: 26 Apr 2010 02:00 PM PDT

People have been hiding things under their bed for ages.  I just can’t really say it’s ever occurred to me to stash a big flat screen TV under my bed.  Apparently one gadet creator has a slight thing for stashing things under the covers, because they decided to create a mechanism that will hide your TV and then bring it out again with just the touch of a little button.

You’d have to make sure that you have a whole lot of clearance space for your TV to move from underneath to up where you can see it.  When it shows up on your doorstep it comes pre-assembled and doesn’t even require for you to modify your bed frame at all.  It can handle a screen that weighs up to 120lbs, which means you can have a pretty serious TV.  Sadly though it can cost you up to $22,999.

Babycakes Cupcake Maker

Posted: 26 Apr 2010 01:13 PM PDT

Cupcake makers are officially the kitchen gadgets I never knew I needed.  Alright, so no one really needs it, but come on they’re mini cupcakes.  Plus they pop out fresh out of the maker extremely quickly.  This isn’t the first cupcake maker I’ve come across, but this one comes with a whole lot more and it’s even at a slightly better price.  Not enough to make it seem as if it might be an inferior product, but just enough to make you jump on the cupcake maker bandwagon a whole lot faster.

The Babycakes Cupcake maker comes in both yellow and pink, I know, they’re not exactly gender neutral colors.  It makes 8 mini cupcakes at a time within the non-stick baking plates.  Plus this comes with a heavy duty icing bag and coupler, 4 stainless steel decorating tips, crust cutting and forming tools, then finally a small recipe book to finish things off.  You can purchase the 1400 watt cupcake maker for  $30 through Select Brands.

Pebble Portable Charger

Posted: 26 Apr 2010 05:30 AM PDT

The Pebble Portable Charger will cater to most of us these days who carry multiple devices, although the advent of smartphones with their convergence features does render a combination of cellphone and portable media player invalid. Retailing for £49.99 a pop, the Pebble Portable Charger kills off any excuse of not having enough juice while you’re on-the-go, since it holds a 5000mA battery inside which ought to be enough to charge your iPhone four times over, while shipping with connectors for devices from Apple, Sony Ericsson and Nokia, and is compatible with all other electronics that rely on mini USB to recharge.

Interactive Intelligence Games for Dogs

Posted: 26 Apr 2010 05:00 AM PDT

So you think that having mastered over a few dozen tricks, your pooch is the smartest one on the block? Well, why not put your for legged friend’s brain to the test with the Interactive Intelligence Games for Dogs? This unique purchase which retails anywhere from $29.99 to $39.99 (depending on the set you get of course) are all different, and yet fun enough to keep your pooch mentally stimulated instead of just lying down in the corner all day long. Treats can be hidden in the compartments, and your dog will have to figure out exactly how to remove those treats. Sounds like a brainier version of Kong toys that require a really long tongue to get those treats out! Of course, it does make us wonder whether frustration by your dog due to its inability to solve the puzzle might just cause him/her to chew up the toy instead. You can choose from Spinny (easy), Tornado (difficult) and Twister (most difficult) models.

Sony to discontinue floppy disk sales

Posted: 26 Apr 2010 02:51 AM PDT

Sony has just announced that they will no longer be making floppy disks anymore.

I suppose this should come as no surprise. Ever since I purchased my A-drive free laptop in 2006, I no longer use floppy disks. In fact, once I sold off my desktop and now have a laptop for every adult in the house, I have a desk drawer full of floppies. Oh man, I hope that I never have to access any of the information on those floppies ever again.

So what about you, readers? When was the last time you even used a floppy disk? Or do you just use flash drives or memory cards now?

It would appear that floppy disks are now joining the dead format club of LPs, cassettes, laser discs, reel-to-reel, 8-tracks, VHS, and Betamax. Granted, they still sell those products somewhere, but they don’t have near the high life in the heyday.

By the way, Sony sold 12 million floppy discs in Japan alone. I’m guessing that number isn’t enough to turn a profit, or else they wouldn’t be terminating this format.

Here are media formats that I believe are next to go:

1) Music CDs. Considering iTunes and other digital formats to play on our MP3 players are the music of choice these days, how long will it be before these will be completely non-existent?

2) DVDs. If Blu-ray is the going to catch on, then DVD will become what VHS was: replaced.

3) Blu-ray. Yes, Blu-ray. Aren’t we at the point where we can just store our movies completely on a hard drive and can just download them from a third-party source?

4) Film. We have digital cameras now. In fact, I have one in my cell phone. Hello?

Sony won’t be discontinuing these floppy disks until March 2011. Better stock up if you’re one of those who believes in this format, like those guys who won’t give up on vinyl records.

Hands-on Review of the Blue Ant Q1

Posted: 26 Apr 2010 01:33 AM PDT

It’s been a while since we touched on the Blue Ant Q1, and it was about time that I managed to get a review model. In fact, I have been trying for over a year since its introduction in CES 2009.

The Q1 is probably one of the easiest Bluetooth headsets that I have ever used. Part of it is because it is the first Bluetooth headset that talked to me. Seriously, I put it in my ear, and it gave me instructions for pairing with my mobile phone.

So if a phone call comes in, I can just say “answer” or “ignore”, and it will do just that. I can even have it call information or eight speed dial numbers with a vocal command. The one that most impressed me was that I could check the battery life of both the headset and my mobile phone by just saying “Check Battery”.

The Q1 had a nice design that stayed on my ear due to its easy hook design. It has “voice isolation technology” that can “reduce noise and wind”.

Other features pairing of up to eight separate devices, as well as multipoint (connecting 2 phones and answer from the one that rings). As for talk time, it is good for 4 hours, or 100 hours of standby.

In short, it is quite an easy-to-use Bluetooth headset that works quite well, and I would recommend it. I believe that Blue Ant has the more advanced T1 out now, and Amazon has price-slashed the Q1 to $63.99. You can check it out here.

Husqvarna DXR 310 robot for demolition

Posted: 26 Apr 2010 12:57 AM PDT

The last time we were covering Husqvarna, they were working on robot lawnmowers that work like Roombas on the grass.

Now they are working on this Husqvarna DXR 310, which is an “industrial demolition robot designed to work in hard to reach, or just plain dangerous areas”.

As you can see, it has some treads to propel it where it need to go, albeit slowly. It then has some legs to keep it into place while it wrecks things with some attachments like jackhammers, scoops, and claws.

Whoever is behind the controls should be able to pretty much wreck anything he or she wants with this. Seriously, I don’t think that the US. military could stop this guy.

In fact, you know what it reminds me of? I, Robot. You know that scene where Will Smith goes into this mansion of a murder victim to get some info, and he thinks the “demolition-robot” is scheduled to destroy the mansion at 8:00 AM the next day. Of course, the demolition robot gets its wires crossed and destroys the house with Will inside at 8:00 PM.

Remember how all the robots went all rogue at the end of the movie? Just imagine an army of Husqvarna DXR 310 demolition robots. Now that is just scary.

By the way, does anyone out know how to pronounce “Husqvarna”? It looks as easy to mess up as that volcano in Iceland.
