Keep the Kids Active

One of the fastest growing epidemics in parts of the world are obese children. Unfortunately school budget cuts, the cyber age and growth of video games introduced a more sedentary lifestyle and fast food is, well fast and fattening. The attention formerly invested in running around, playing games and being physically active now resides in sitting at a desk or in front of a TV. But if you know kids like I do, you can usually incentivize them to get out and be active. Their competitive nature provides a perfect catalyst to get them back to physical activity.

Meet Sqord, promoting healthy and active play among children. Currently in Beta phase, Sqord enables kids equipped with a Sqord PowerBand to track their activity. After they create their PowerMe profile online – including a customizable fav icon – they start being active. Running, jumping, hoping, walking. Everything is tracked by the band. Sqord partnered with FitBit to use their advanced accelerometer technology to track activity. Then just swipe the band over a Sqord SyncStation. Activity is all tracked and recorded to the child's account. As a kid becomes active they can be rewarded with virtual medals or points and get into competitions with friends or classmates. They can even send each other virtual high fives and congrats. Not to fear. The Sqord unit is made for kids and virtually indestructible (see video). Although in beta you can sign up for more information on their website. If you have a houseful or a classroom full of little ones let technology help them be more active – rather than less active.

Roku 3 announced

Roku, a name that one should be familiar with when it comes to set top boxes, has just announced their latest version to join the family, the Roku 3. Not exactly the most creative of names when you think about it, but it will suffice for the moment. Roku 3 intends to make it easier and quicker than ever to access over 750 channels of the best movies, TV shows, sports, music and games, and it has even been touted to be the fastest and most powerful Roku streaming player to date, thanks to a speedier processor underneath the hood in addition to an enhanced remote that comes with a headphone jack so that you can listen in private without having to disturb anyone around you. Not only that, Roku 3 would be accompanied by a new user interface that enables a more fluid browsing and navigation experience.

Anthony Wood, founder and CEO, Roku, said, "As Roku continues to build the largest selection of streaming entertainment, we are always exploring ways to improve the TV experience for our customers. Roku 3 introduces thoughtful new features that customers will love. The intuitive new interface makes it easy to find movies and shows quickly while the private listening mode is perfect for late-night streamers who don't want to wake up the family."

The remote control of the Roku 3 also doubles up as a motion-sensing game controller, letting you enjoy games such as Angry Birds Space, while you can download Roku's free app for iOS and Android devices that turns the phone into the ultimate Roku command center, now how about that?

If you are interested in picking up the Roku 3 streaming player, you can now do so (assuming you reside in the US), where it can be purchased over at Roku.com as well as Amazon.com, and Roku has attached a recommended retail price of $99.99. If online shopping is not your cup of tea, you can always choose to bring home a Roku 3 yourself from retail stores around the US from April onwards, which is three weeks away for the more patient ones.

Know the Temp Where You Are

Personal thermometers rock. If you visit my parent's house my dad will happily tell you from the device on his table that the temperature outside is 44.2 degrees. Much more accurate than 'low 40s' that the TV people say. I am sure most of us consult our weather app on our phone regularly. And I am fairly sure that many of those times the temperature is not accurate. Phone makers certainly are not going back to the drawing board to add built-in temperature gauges, adding more bulk and cost to add a feature that frankly is not real techie. Yet plenty of occasions – and fanatical people – exist where accurate temperatures are a must.

Robocat, a Danish software studio, previously did a successful 'outside temperature" app called Thermo. Based on a negative reviewer's frustration of not being able to get the temp where they were in their house they came up with an idea for Thermodo. This little device easily plugs in to an iOS or Android device and the built in electronic thermometer measures the temperature on the spot. Using Thermo or the upcoming, specially designed Thermodo app your phone will quickly display the temp. When not in use, house the little Thermodo sensor in a secure yet small case which comes on a key ring so you won't misplace it. Maybe those smartphone makers should reconsider their phone features as interest is high in this device. They quickly vaulted past their fundraising goal on Kickstarter with over 3 weeks to go. You can still get in on an early shipment of Thermodo for just $25 with higher priced options (and more goodies) available too. Why depend on the weather service, which is miles away, to know the temp? Let Thermodo be your guide.

We all live in a wireless society these days, there is no escaping it. Hop onto any form of public transport, and chances are you will find the younger generation indulging in their respective mobile devices, noses buried into touchscreen displays (where have all the books gone?), while their fingers scroll and select an option from time to time. Most folks would also look out for a Wi-Fi hotspot most of the time when they head out, instead of relying on their mobile data plans. There is no escaping the wireless revolution for sure, and bēm wireless intends to add more flavor, although their latest offering, the bēm wireless boom box is not one that thrives on a Wi-Fi connection, but rather, would prefer to ensure that folks around you will be able to listen to your favorite musical tracks without being bogged down by the issue of a power cord.

Crow's Feet Reducing Skin Toner

Everyone would love to remain young forever, which is why great monarchs and heroes of the past have always been on the lookout for the next big thing, and would give up their entire fortune if they succeeded in discovering the location of the fabled fountain of youth (which does not exist, so don't bother). Well, other than adhering to all of the other principles of good health such as eating right, getting enough exercise, and sleeping well, what else can you do? Sure, having the right supplements in your body system is a decent idea, but how about a little bit of external help?

This is where the $139.95 Crow’s Feet Reducing Skin Toner comes in handy, as this particular device would tighten skin while help diminish wrinkles around the eyes, all without having to send you under the surgeon's knife for a procedure in the operating theater. It is said that the Crow’s Feet Reducing Skin Toner relies on similar technology that is used by professional aestheticians, where it will emit safe, gentle micro currents which in turn stimulate muscle contractions so that it can help strengthen and tighten the skin while reducing wrinkles in the process. No idea on whether it works as advertised, but hey, it carries the Hammacher Schlemmer Lifetime Guarantee so that goes to say something.

BrickCase for iPhone 5

Having a spanking new smartphone is always a joyous occasion, and there is also very good reason to make sure that the particular smartphone you have purchased has been given the necessary protection, too. What? You mean to say that your iPhone 5 remains naked, and is more than vulnerable to tiny scratches, drops and shocks? Heaven forbid, which is why you need to invest in the £19.99 BrickCase for iPhone 5, which will come in black, blue, green, red, and get this – Glow in the Dark colors. I kid you not, that is what the product description says!

The BrickCase for iPhone 5 is compatible with all major brick brands, where it will allow you to accessorize it whatever way you want to. I strongly suspect that getting this would also mean making a trip to the nearest Toys R Us and picking up one of your favorite LEGO sets, although the missus might not approve of such action. Despite the rather toy-like look, it sports a sturdy protective case that offers access to all ports and buttons.
