Lexmark Pinnacle Pro901

Posted: 16 Mar 2010 03:57 PM PDT

Lexmark has just recently unveiled their All-in-One (AIO) inkjet printer at the Fifth Annual Small Business Summit with the Pinnacle Pro901.

This is probably a follow-up to all the AIO printers that were revealed last year around Fall, but this one is designed for small to medium business and small and home office users. Like most Lexmark printers it has the 4-in-1 capability of print, scan, copy, or fax, but I don’t have any information if it will be wireless. Are we at the point where any printer these days has to be wireless?

The big bragging right of the Lexmark Pinnacle Pro901, is the cheap price of ink cartridges. They are only $4.99, and are able to print 500 pages. Lexmark is glad to say that this is “a penny a page”. The cartridges, as well as the SmarSolutions and an industry-leading 5-year warranty, have earned the company the 2010 Hot Tech Demo Award.

The Pro901 has a 4.3 inch capacitive touchscreen, and it also has several one touch printer apps, available for download from the Web. I have the X7675 Lexmark on my desk at home, and I have used the Interact before, and as fun as the touchscreen is, buttons works just fine.

The Pro901 will be available in April for $299.99.

Coffee Inhaler can keep you awake, without the percolator.

Posted: 16 Mar 2010 02:54 PM PDT

Clearly, there must be a demand for legalized inhalants, as a company known as Le Whif has made inhalable chocolate. This company has also invented a coffee inhaler.

I suppose that this product is for those who like what coffee can do, but don’t want to drink it. I must admit that I fall under this category of people, and this is why I drink Mountain Dew. What you are seeing here is the bhong that holds lipstick-like containers that are then pulled open, inserted in the mouth, and then inhaled.

The sticks can deliver 100 milligrams of caffeine, which is the drinking equivalent of a cup of espresso. Apparently, you can get nine hits on an individual stick, but this is “depending on how hard they inhale”. I wonder what happens if you don’t inhale?

Okay, enough Clinton jokes. Still, are we looking at an age where we are inhaling coffee? I mean, the early nineties brought us over-priced coffee franchises like Starbucks, and several people can’t live without these franchises. However, I must admit that these coffee whiffs are probably cheaper. They are sold individually for $3 or three for $8. I don’t have a price for the inhaler itself, but I’m sure you could probably get something similar in a back alley.

Augmented Reality Scavenger Hunt in Tokyo

Posted: 16 Mar 2010 02:24 PM PDT

I love the idea of using augmented reality to create a scavenger hunt, and I’m glad that someone finally did one last weekend. I wish I could have been a part of it, but the Crimsonfox project took place in Tokyo in the central district of Shibuya.

In order to play this game, the 200 players had to have an iPhone and an App available at the Japanese App Store. The goal of the game was to find the secret hints in order to find the real-world hideout of the secret society of the Moonlights.

Man, does that sound mysterious. I’ve got a video of this after the jump, but I must admit that it is really quick, and it should have been in more detail. However, it’s enough so you can see how it works. The players hold up their iPhones, and they can see how far away the clues are. Then, once they got close to the clue, only a phone can reveal the code that will get you to the next clue.

I don’t know if there was any big cash prize to the winner of this thing, but I’m told that 7,000 people watched this online. I suppose that one of these augmented reality scavenger hunts could appear on a reality show, but don’t they already do that on The Amazing Race?

Ecocoon blocks out noise

Posted: 16 Mar 2010 10:30 AM PDT

There are times that it feels like all you really need is just a little quiet.  If only you had it for an hour or two your worries would start to melt away and maybe that headache would subside finally.  Well someone decided to create a gadget that will help block out certain types of noise or all of it altogether.  Sure, it’s probably expensive, but it might be cheaper than an all out vacation every time you’re ready to snap.

The Ecocoon has a few different modes that it uses.  There’s the traffic mode that will filter out the peak frequencies.  Then there’s office mode that takes out the mid-range and the offline which just kills all noise.  The mid-range takes care of things like people talking away at their respective desks.  It’s basically a really expensive version of earplugs.  Well, it probably would be were it not still in the concept stage of its life.

Infectious Lamp with removable lights

Posted: 16 Mar 2010 09:30 AM PDT

Instead of leaving these balls of light attached to their tree-like fixture, you can pop them off of the tree.  Then just lay them about the house wherever you could use a little bit of a soft glow to go along with your usual décor.  You can turn all of the squishy balls on or just a couple at a time, just depending on how much light you need.

It appears that the tree will give them a charge and when they’re fully charged can be plucked off and used elsewhere.  They’re made out of soft silicone, so they’ll probably be alright if they roll off the table on occasion.  The design was done for Julien Bergignat and have actually been picked up by a French manufacturer, but there’s no word on availability or pricing just yet.

Teva Illum Sandals have headlights for your feet

Posted: 16 Mar 2010 08:19 AM PDT

As weather warms up again, it’s about time to drag out your flip flops.  These flip flops from Teva are no ordinary sandals.  They come with a set of LED lights strapped to the front.  They’ll shine out brightly in front of you, ensuring you won’t step on anything.  Don’t worry, for those times you don’t want to look like a complete dork, these can pop off and be attached to your keychain.

This is one of those things that you don’t buy until you’re already very securely in a relationship.  Otherwise, you’re probably going to repel the opposite sex with these sandals.  On the bright side, at least you’ll be able to watch them running away from you, even when it’s pitch black out.  The sandals will be available sometime this coming May and will cost you $60 per pair.
