Western Digital is famous for their range of hard drives, be it internal or external ones. Well, the company has just announced that their range of 500GB My Passport Essential portable hard drives will now come in limited edition designs which are available exclusively only from Best Buy and WD’s store. If you’re one who wants to marry both form and function, then you can pick from several unique designs which are touted to appeal to a wide variety of personal styles, catering to outdoor enthusiasts and urban trendsetters alike. These designs were commissioned by students at California State University, Long Beach’s Industrial Design program, and you will be able to pick from Boom Box, Black Hole, Cityscape, Fuchsia Leaf and Wave styles. Why these decorative patterns, you ask? Well, they were specially commenced for students who want to express their individual style while choosing a reliable, ultra-portable place to store their media and back up their valuable work. Of course, if you’re an expressive office drone, you can still pick it up but it might look a bit out of place with your suit and all.

Each of these drives will play nice with the Windows platform, and will ship with WD SmartWare software that offers a simple, visual method for backup. It is achieved via a single-screen view of the drive’s contents, and if you want to keep the data within all the more secure, it will also come with user-selected password protection alongside 256-bit hardware-based encryption for that added peace of mind. Those who are in the know will note that 256-bit hardware-based encryption is normally found only on much more expensive drive systems, so Western Digital is giving more bang for your buck here.

Too bad you are limited by the choice of storage space – the new My Passport Essential limited edition designs are offered in one capacity, which is 500GB. Good thing it comes with a 2-year limited warranty just in case Mr. Murphy decides to strike in an extraordinary manner. Retailing for $119.99 a pop, we’re stoked to know that each of these portable hard drives come in planet-friendly packaging that is made out of recycled materials, although we would have liked to see it feature USB 3.0 connectivity as well to be future proof to a certain extent.

Nook for Android announced

Barnes & Noble has just announced that they will be rolling out Nook for Android, a fun and easy-to-use Barnes & Noble eReading experience which will obviously cater for folks who own Android-powered smartphones and devices. This spanking new application is the latest addition to Barnes & Noble's slate of free, popular eReader software, and is currently the one and only Android eReader application that lets you share eBooks with friends. Fog Filled Bubble Machine

USB Butt Cooler Cushion

The Butt Cooler Cushion doesn’t leave much room for guessing, they just go right to the point and don’t dance around the truth. You have to value that level of bluntness. This Thanko cushion is meant to make sure that even your posterior stays nice and cool while you’re sitting in front of a very warm computer. That’s one heck of an accomplishment to stay cool in the presence of a computer.

The cushion is of course USB powered, being a Thanko product. The cushion has a integrated fan and even a USB adapter for your car. That means you can even use it while you’re out and about. Although somehow I doubt that carrying around a cushion like this is really going to attract the opposite sex. Then again, having sweat pouring off of you won’t help either. Keeping cool all of the time during the summer is close to impossible. There are just some places that aren’t as well air conditioned as others. If you are particularly sweaty in those situations and want to try to stay cool, this little pocket fan should be of great use to you. It could easily fit into your pocket and the blades tuck away nicely so that you won’t have to worry about them breaking off while you’re carrying it around.

These tiny fans come in two different colors, bright white and eggplant. The eggplant at least makes it look like the fan has a coat of leather over top of it. Cow Wash, It’s Brand Moo

I think this is the first time we’ve ever reported about a gadget especially for cows, introducing the Cow Wash, it does exactly what it says.

The Cow Wash is created by Swedish firm DeLaval and they have sold over 30,000 which must amount to a serious number of clean cows.

I did find the cow wash somewhat amoosing but it does offer some serious benefits:

Increased milk production due to improving the cows blood circulation
Stops the spread of disease
Makes cows happier

Autom robot helps you lose weight

As someone who is trying to lose weight, I have quickly learned how tough a fight it is going to be.

I believe the Autom robot was designed to help out the user with their diet. It is up to the user to enter in the details of their diet, such has their fitness level. Just think of it as a WiiFit, except the white rectangle talks to you.

The Autom has some sort of databank, and then it can carry on some conversations. I can only assume that these conversations are pretty one-sided, and Autom will tell you to “stick to your workout, fattie”. Okay, I added the “fattie” on the end there, but I think you see what is going on here. I have a video of it if you want to see it in action.

This is kind of a spoiler, but the video says that Autom is going to be featured in the film Astro Boy. I seem to recall seeing that film last year, and I didn’t see it.

Personally, I think this thing should make an appearance on The Biggest Loser. Apparently, there are plans to get this thing out soon. They will probably advertise it on The Biggest Loser along with all the other health products they sell.

AiRScouter head mounted display from Brother

I have covered a lot of head-mounted displays (HMD), such as the i-Bean, before.

The AiRScouter is not like the Vuzix iWear, as it doesn’t have two viewers on each eye. It seems to be designed for viewing things with just one eye, for some sort of multi-tasking. For example, this might be good for an electrician who is doing repairs, and needs to have the schematic on hand.

I believe that this device has a “Retinal Imaging Display”. I’m not really certain what this is, but I believe that Brother wants to use it for augmented reality applications. Considering that I have considered augmented reality one of the coolest gadgets ever, I am pleased to see that it just keeps getting bigger.

Believe it or not, Brother unveiled this HMD back in 2008, and then again in 2009. It was unnamed had a completely different design. By the way, it is still in a prototype stage. Man, will this ever get into the hands of customers? Something tells me this isn’t designed for the typical consumer, but for the construction worker some sort of utility worker.

If you want to see this AiRScouter, you can go to the Brother World JAPAN 2010 Expo in Tokyo for September.

Wedding ring can function as a crude projector

Most married people have a reminder of their commitment on their finger, and should have at least one wedding photo. What if you could have both of those in the same place?

That’s right, it is a wedding ring with a photo inside. This picture will give you an idea of how small the photo is, but it will get bigger if you shine a light through it. In fact, you can project an image on the wall. My source does not have a measurement of how large the image is, nor how much light is required to make this projection.

Best of all, you don’t have to just stick with one picture. The ring has the option of switching out slides, but they must be pretty tiny slides.

Sounds pretty cool, doesn’t it? It also sounds like the perfect wedding gift. Too bad designers Luke Jerram and jeweler Tamrakar always say the same thing when they get a request for a second ring:

Congratulations on your engagement! I’m afraid this ring was a one off, made for my wife. I’m afraid you’ll have to make your own unique ring for your own unique partner!

By the way, this ring was designed for Luke Jerram, one of the makers. Too bad it is a one-time-only, as I could easily see these being mass produced.
