Netgear has quartet of new ProSafe Plus Switch models

Posted: 09 Nov 2010 05:29 PM PST

Netgear has expanded their ProSafe Plus Switch family with four more models in order to cater for growing businesses with growing network needs, where all of the new ProSafe Plus Switches will offer built-in cable test support, QoS prioritization for voice & video traffic and VLAN configuration for network segmentation, and even more impressively, doing all of this within 10% of the cost of an unmanaged switch. Those who are in management positions will be able shortlist this as one of the main methods of cutting costs while running a business, that’s for sure.

What do we have in the whole family? Well, there is the eight-port desktop GS108E, the 16-port desktop GS116E and the rack-mounted 24-port JGS524E which all offer Gigabit Ethernet. The eight-port desktop GS108PE will be the first in the ProSafe Plus Switch family that delivers Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) for supporting devices including IP phones, wireless access points, security cameras and remote switches – all without having to have separate electric lines providing the necessary juice. Other powerful features in the new ProSafe Plus Switches offerings include :-

  • Traffic monitoring and control through a non-technical graphically based software utility
  • Quality of Service (QoS) to prioritize traffic by port or by type of data
  • Detection of cable loops to prevent broadcast storms, eliminating the need for network diagnostic tools that often cost hundreds of dollars
  • Automatic protection against Denial-of-Service (DoS) attacks
  • Virtual Local Area Network (VLAN) support for separating traffic, such as offering a guest WiFi network that is walled off from the corporate network
  • Simple set-up, along with plug-and-play connectivity
  • Fan-less design for quiet operation, allowing placement in open work areas

Boasting the company’s very own Netgear Green design, it is touted to reduce power consumption by as much as 70% in comparison to unmanaged switches, with auto power-down of unused ports and automatic cable-length detection thrown into the mix that further helps reduce power for cable runs under 10 meters. You also need not fret should something go awry – Netgear offers full 24/7 technical support which connects customers directly to experienced switching experts. Now for the pricing – the GS108E will retail for $85 while the GS108PE with four PoE ports start from $175 onwards. As for the GS116E, it begins from $196 with the JGS524E starting at $289 as they arrive at the end of this month.

Subzero Warm Breath Mask

Posted: 09 Nov 2010 05:02 PM PST

No, wearing this doesn’t turn you into some sort of cold blooded ninja from the Mortal Kombat series, but rather, it is meant to help you face the upcoming winter without feeling too uncomfortable. This fleece mask is preferred by high-altitude mountaineers and Antarctic scientists because it humidifies and warms winter air for comfortable breathing. There is a special ventilation chamber which allows wearers to inhale full, unhindered breaths while making sure a small amount of heated, humid exhalation is trapped – this is so that a comfortable, fully oxygenated “microclimate” will remain within the mask with up to 80 percent humidity and temperatures 40° F to 60° F warmer than outside air.

Apparently, medical studies by the American College of Sports Medicine do point towards the benefits of such a microclimate being healthier for the lungs, since excessive exposure to cold, dry air can trigger asthmatic symptoms. Boasting medical-grade, microbe-resistant polyurethane in the chamber which will bond with humidity in the air, it helps keep moisture off the face while preventing fog on glasses and goggles. The mask itself is highly breathable, featuring wind-resistant Polartec fleece with hook-and-loop flaps that are shaped to fit comfortably over goggles and helmets. Make someone happy this winter for $59.95.

Hands on with GiiNii’s new 8-inch Digital Photo Frame

Posted: 09 Nov 2010 04:27 PM PST

It has been a while since I reported on GiiNii Digital Photo Frame, and the 8-inch “All-in-One” True Video Picture Frame looks nearly identical to one I reviewed a while ago.

It does have similar features like the 8-inch back-lit LED panel with 800 x 600 resolution and a 4:3 aspect ratio.

Pictures and videos can be loaded through the 6-in-1 card reader (SD, MMC, MS, MS Pro, MS Duo, and xD-Picture), USB flash drive, or transferred directly from a computer via USB to mini-USB into the 2GB of internal memory.

It can support photos like JPEG, BMP, GIF, TIFF, EXIF, and Progressive JPEG. It can also do audio like MP3, WMA, AAC, and WAVE, and, as an update on the last 8-inch frame, it can do MPEG-4 and AVC/H.264 video playback.

One thing that I like about this frame is the ease of controls, and it is able to create slideshows easily. Personalization seems to be key with this frame, as the user can put their pictures in scrapbooking templates, and set up their clock in a certain “skins” as well. These templates can also be created at the GiiNii site.

This digital picture frame should be available soon from Amazon and Staples for a price of $89.99 to $109.99. For those who are looking to purchase a digital picture frame as a gift, I would recommend this one.

Flyrad is one extreme motorized unicycle with rollerblades

Posted: 09 Nov 2010 03:58 PM PST

Clearly, I am not “extreme” enough to try something like the Flyrad.

I admit that I once had a skateboard, but I was never one of those Thrasher guys with sidewalk burns on their legs. I guess I always tried to be too safe on the board.

The Flyrad is made for those who really want to try something really risky, and you can see how it works. The user has a motorized unicycle which he or she keeps in front of him. This provides the propulsion required to move the rollerbladed user anywhere the pavement will take them.

Just think of it as water-skiing on land, but you are actually holding the boat in your hands. By the way, you can also sit on the motor unicycle, and ride it with the rollerblades, if you dare.

Man, this looks like something that I would see at skate parks, making the other skateboarders and rollerbladers look like wimps.

I don’t know what the Flyrad motor unicycle runs on, nor how fast it goes. Let’s just say that it is fast enough to get you hurt. I also don’t know how much this costs, or if there is any plan on putting the Flyrad into mass production.

Hands on with the Hexbug Nano

Posted: 09 Nov 2010 03:32 PM PST

We have reported on the Hexbugs, as well as the Hexbug Nano, and I had a chance to try out the latter personally.

The Hexbug Nano is an electronic toy that is not very expensive, and could easily be the big stocking stuffer for this holiday. The good news is that they come with their own battery, and these two-inch long toys are powered by one of those batteries that you would put in a watch. I have no idea how long it would run for.

The Hexbug nano works with some sort of vibration thing in it, which makes it scurry across a flat surface like it was a real roach. This also gives it the power to flip on its front when its put on its back.

According to the official website, the Nano comes in five colors, which you can buy in five-pack sets. However, if you buy one Hexbug, you cannot choose what color you get, and they show ten colors pictured. I can’t help but wonder if some colors are more rare than others. Comic book companies do the same marketing trick when they print one issue with many colors, and make some colors purposely more rare than the other to increase collector value.

I believe that Hexbugs are a Radio Shack exclusive product. You can buy one for $7.99 or a five-pack of all different specimens for $36.99.

Blio – Just like the actual book, only better

Posted: 09 Nov 2010 03:40 AM PST

Blio is the revolutionary FREE eReading application that does more than just show you copied text. It is an application that preserves the feel of the book, layout and format, pictures and colors, allowing you to capture all the nuances the author wanted you to have, allowing you to actually enjoy the book in its original form.

Blio also harnesses the potential of the machine you are reading on, by allowing you to look up words, write in the margins of your book and highlight text. You can sync several devices or access your reading materials anywhere you have an internet connection. Blio will even read to you, highlighting the text as it goes. Blio has the capability of offering books with embedded videos and clickable text. Cool.

At this writing there are thousands of full color titles to choose from at Blio's built in bookstore and they promise almost 1 million titles in the future. The bookstore also features reviews and ratings simplifying your eBook purchases. With the availability of a free eReader, don't expect the books to be inexpensive, but they should be more visually appealing and a whole lot more fun.

The application can be downloaded now, to all Windows-based devices with applications for iOS, Android and Silverlight platforms available soon. Oh yeah, I mentioned that it was free, right?

Further info over on the Blio site.
