Pocket Radar all set for CES 2010 release Posted: 29 Dec 2009 05:04 PM PST
The use of proprietary digital signal processing algorithms and state-of-the-art intelligent target acquisition techniques help users obtain unprecedented, industry leading accuracy and speed measurement detection regardless of the object. Pocket Radar has set a new standard for performance for the consumer electronics category, where it can be used by both professionals and everyday consumers in a wide range of methods – you can be a coach trying to clock baseball pitch speeds, or an athlete who want to improve your times, and even NASCAR racing fans are able to be more participative by clocking their favorite driver’s speed around the track. Pocket Radar will rely on a Doppler radar signal detection and processing system that works in tandem with re-engineered microwave and antenna components, helping deliver a similar powerful performance that are currently available via traditional bulky radar guns. Being small enough to fit into a shirt pocket (and hence its name), it is accurate to within 1 mile per hour. Don’t worry about it running out of juice fast either – a set of AAA batteries are good for up to 10,000 speed measurements. Cool Gift Idea: Digital Picture Frames, check out our reviews. Asphaltfighters Stormbringer certainly ups the ante Posted: 29 Dec 2009 04:56 PM PST
Judging by the specifications, one can more or less argue that this is the world’s most extreme production motorcycle for the moment. Needless to say, something this exclusive will be produced in limited quantities, where each purchase will see the suspension tuned to the buyer’s weight and the riding position. Made in Germany, it has the standard 165bhp Kawasaki ZX-10R as its base, where Warm-up will then rework everything to result in such a beast. Implantable solar cells the way of the future Posted: 29 Dec 2009 04:48 PM PST Solar energy seems to be the way to go regardless of where you stay (we’re talking about populated areas and not some of those tribal peoples who live in extreme cold conditions, introduced to us through National Geographic), as it is free, environmentally friendly and capable of keeping your devices juiced up no matter what, albeit requiring far longer than usual compared to a regular power outlet. There is a new method of implementing solar cells, and we’re not talking about having it on your roof or the top of your car – as a partnership between researchers from Donghua University in Shanghai, China and Max Planck Institute for Colloids and Interfaces in Potsdam, Germany, managed to come up with photovoltaic cells that can be used to recharge batteries in implanted devices simply by shining a near infrared laser beam via the skin. Sounds creepy? Yeah, this was made possible using rare earth upconverting nanophosphors that are capable of absorbing 980 nm laser light, where it is followed by emitting visible luminescence that will subsequently excite traditional solar cells to produce electricity. This might get a bit more technical than usual, but the boffins discovered that “under the irradiation of a 980-nm laser with a power of 1W, the visible up-converting luminescence of rare-earth nanophosphors can be efficiently absorbed by the dyes in 980LD-PVCs so that they exhibit a maximal output power of 0.47 mW.” Before it can be used on us humans, further testing must be conducted, and initial results have showed that even after being covered with 1 to 6 layers of pig intestines with a thickness of around 1mm per layer, 980LD-PVCs still managed to exert a maximal output power of between 0.28 and 0.02 mW, which is more than enough juice to power a whole host of biodevices. Guess we might just have heart pacers that keep on going, and going, and going in the future, eh? Source: Medgadget Check out the Coolest Gadgets 2008 Gift Guides, Christmas shopping made easy. Cydle P29A accompanies you on your travels Posted: 29 Dec 2009 04:45 PM PST
The Cydle P29A will play nice with the P29H device from the same company as well, where it will result in the coupling of a multimedia player with HD Radio Technology. With the Cydle P29A targeting a Q2 2010 release date at an estimated retail price of $199, it will also boast of the distinction of being one of the pioneers in free mobile TV to hit the US market, incorporating the ASTC digital standard for mobile TV technology. Depending on where you stay, channels will vary so you might want to take note of that. Features of the Cydle P29A media player include a high-resolution 2.9″ touchscreen display, an optimized interface for easy use even for first timers, high quality audio and video playback, a built-in gravity sensor to view in portrait or landscape mode, depending on how the device is orientated, a photo viewer to cycle through your favorite digital memories, a world clock, multiple alarms, a stopwatch, calculator and voice recording capability. Guess you and the family won’t be bored with this on the road – just make sure you juice it up before your travels. Tech Cult – We cover the latest tech news, but always with a funny twist. Posted: 29 Dec 2009 03:35 PM PST I would like to say “thank you” to Thanko. This company has given us some interesting devices in the past, such as the HDD Media Player that we just reported on just yesterday. That HDD Media Player sounds useful, doesn’t it? I just can’t help but think that these Hot Cat Gloves are just downright useless. Of course, I have no right to judge, because, according to Thanko, their Catgirl Earphones from last summer are their “No. 1 selling item”. I suppose that a pair of cat paws that warm your hands was an obvious choice for Thanko’s winter catalog. All the user has to do is connect the gloves to a USB port, and the pink paw pads that you can see in the pic deliver warmth to your bare fingers. Yes, your fingers are exposed with these gloves, but that’s only so you can type with these feline fists. Clearly, there must be some sort of crowd out there that digs dressing up as a kitty cat. I’m not certain that I want to know the reason. Didn’t CSI do an episode about this? These cat gloves weigh about 145 g, and you can get them on the Thanko website for about $35. Epson’s Augmented Reality cards for the New Year Posted: 29 Dec 2009 03:09 PM PST Epson wants you to celebrate the new year with one of the coolest technological achievements from last year. I’m not talking about the tablet, but Augmented Reality. True, augmented reality was not created last year, but it really flourished in 2009 with numerous ad campaigns. I first experienced it at CES 2009, and I called it the “Coolest Gadget ever”. I’m sure I’ll see it at CES 2010, and on many more applications throughout the next year. Apparently, there is some tradition in Japan that uses end of the year greeting cards, and so Epson decided to liven it up with a dash of augmented reality. These greeting cards, also known as nengajo, allow the users face to be wrapped in the animal personna of the new year. For 2010, this is the year of the tiger. I have a video of it after the jump if you want to see it for yourself, but I don’t have it translated. To make one of these cards, all a user needs is an Epson Colorio printer. Then he or she just holds it up to the webcam, and prepare for something very, very awesome. Granted, I don’t send New Years Cards, but that is only because we don’t have this custom in the United States. However, most people send Christmas cards, so I wouldn’t be surprised if I see some homemade augmented reality Christmas cards next holiday season. Of course, it’s probably too early to start thinking about Christmas 2010.

Robot Hummingbird could one day have a tiny camera Posted: 29 Dec 2009 02:37 PM PST One of the most intriguing creatures in the animal kingdom is the hummingbird. These small birds have wings that move faster than 30 times per second, and they are the only bird that can fly backwards. It does not surprise me that a Japanese researcher named Hiroshi Liu modeled his flying robot after the hummingbird. His robo-hummingbird, for lack of a better word, weighs up 2.6 grams and 10 centimeters long. Just to let you know, this is about the size of a non-robo-hummingbird. Believe it or not, research into this robotic avian is at $2 million, and counting. The end-goal of this project is to create a robo-hummingbird with a tiny camera. This will allow the robo-hummingbird to fly into tight corners for going to places that humans cannot reach. For example, in situations where a mineshaft has collapsed, and there is only tiny openings for air. Just send in the robo-hummingbird and check on the status on survivors. Now, you could achieve the same effect by mounting a tiny camera on a small flying toy copter, but the toy chopper would not be as stable in its flight. Personally, I can easily see this robo-hummingbird being used as some sort of spy camera. I’m not certain if adding a colorful hummingbird disguise would fool anyone, though. Bullet Space Pen writes underwater Posted: 29 Dec 2009 01:43 PM PST You may have spotted the bullet shaped USB drive that made its way onto the site only a few days ago. If you decided to pick one up, you’ll need one of these space pens to finish off the set. It not only looks like a bullet, but it can manage to write under conditions that a normal pen wouldn’t survive. All of that is thanks to a special cartridge that’s placed in all Fisher pens including this one. That cartridge was designed to be used in the zero gravity environment while in space. It can write at absolutely any angle, including upside down and is capable of writing while you’re underwater. Now if only you could get your notepad to survive underwater. It can also write on top of grease and oil and when it’s dealing with extreme temperatures. The specialized thixotropic ink can also write three times longer than if you were using just normal ink. You can purchase the .375 Caliber Bullet Space Pen for $24.95 from Vat 19. Source: Crunchgear Cool Gift Idea: Digital Picture Frames, check out our reviews. Portable Anti-Spy Cam Scanner for the highly suspicious Posted: 29 Dec 2009 01:00 PM PST You’ve probably seen all types of spy cameras by now. Well now there’s a device for those of you that are paranoid that someone is keeping an electronic eye pointed directly at you. Just pull out this not so subtle device and you’ll know for sure. Of course with this big bulky thing, they’ll also know that you know. At least you’ll finally know the dreaded truth though. You’ll either find that you are being watched or that you’re just an incredibly paranoid human being. The detector is portable, despite that it is a pretty bulky portable device. It has a 2.3" color display, auto scan as well as manual scan and can run for 3-5 hours. It has a couple different ways to keep it powered, you can either use the 4 AA batteries or just plug it into the wall with the Universal AC adaptor. It also has a 2 piece antenna, a set of earphones and a 3.5 jack. You can purchase the Portable Anti-Spy Cam Scanner for $333 from Gadget Brando. Keystone Eco Tag Solar Charger Posted: 29 Dec 2009 12:07 PM PST There are all types of solar chargers out there these days. This one is meant for those of you that are constantly traveling, but it would still work just fine for those that don’t travel at all. This solar charger actually doubles as a luggage tag, which is why it might be better suited for those that travel. Of course, you’ll have to find a way to make sure your luggage gets a bit more sunlight than it would normally receive. Otherwise, this isn’t going to work the greatest. You can either leave it in the sun to make sure it receives the charge it needs, or you could plug it into your USB port and charge it much faster that way. It’s capable of charging 2 AAA NiMH rechargeable batteries. It’s a great way to make sure that your smaller electronics keep a charge while you’re on the go. As of now the luggage tag isn’t out just yet, it’ll be released in February. At that time you can expect for it to cost you $35 a piece. Posted: 28 Dec 2009 05:13 PM PST There has been a lot talk about the LG eXpo, a phone that has a pico-projector. However, CES last year had on display Logic Wireless’ Bolt projector phone. That phone is capable of throwing a VGA image on the wall that is 64 inches wide. Of course, the projector is only one of the features of this phone that can run Symbian. It also has a touchscreen, as well as slots for two SIM cards. It also has two cameras, one for the front and one for the back. I suppose that this is some design for the days when cellular phones will be all video-capable. Yeah, I’m still awaiting that day myself. The Logic Bolt is available at, of all places, Sky Mall. It costs about $500, and that’s the unlocked price. I don’t know who wants this particular phone, as it doesn’t seem to have a carrier. I’m going to venture a guess and say that this will be on display on CES on a little more than a week. If so, I would like to see how the projector fares against pico-projectors. If it can make the images more clear, then there might be market for this. As it is, it seems a little excessive. Coolest Gadgets UK – For all your UK centric tech and gadget news.
