COMPAC Digital Surfaces are a new way to control a kitchen Posted: 09 Apr 2010 04:47 PM PDT COMPAC Digital Surfaces has come up with some technology that is really a long time coming. I don’t know about you, but there are times where I am cooking, and my greasy hands can’t turn the faucets, the oven knobs, or any of my other kitchen controls. I believe that we are headed for an age where practically every phone will be a touchscreen, but most of the operating systems in our kitchens are old-school at best. COMPAC’s Digital Surfaces is an electric keypad that is integrated to work with the surface of the kitchen for much better control. See how the faucet has controls right next to it? It doesn’t look like I’ll be turning anything for hot and cold water, and I hope turning it on and off is easy as hitting one kill switch. I’m guessing it’s probably pretty expensive to integrate this electronic keypad into the kitchen counter, and it should probably be water-proof and resistant to kitchen mess as well. Hopefully it will be easier to clean these things than the oven range. Whatever the case, I’m guessing that we will see this in kitchens of the future, but they will probably be costly. Perhaps the technology will be easier to manufacture, and all kitchens of the future will have the Digital Surface. Then we will see a day where a little boy or girl will not understand a modern day faucet. RoboSwift pefects artificial bird technology Posted: 09 Apr 2010 04:17 PM PDT Isn’t it amazing how many advanced technological things can’t beat out on what nature has already created? I keep seeing how scientists are working on robotic bugs, and this isn’t the first time I’ve seen a robo-bird. This particular robotic bird is developed by researchers at Delft University in The Netherlands. RoboSwift is a robotic bird that has “morphing wing technology” that will make it fly more like a real bird. You can watch the video after the jump, and you can see that the designers are pretty excited about making a robotic bird that anyone would simply look up at and not see it as anything but just a bird. In other words, technology fools people into thinking that its a part of nature. There is also plans on putting a camera on this bird. All I can say to that is: Uh-oh. I’m not looking forward to a world where fake birds fly over head, track my car, and then a cop down the road stops me and gives me a speeding ticket. It reminds me of that scene in the first Lord of the Rings movie where the fellowship is afraid of a flock of birds that goes by. The RoboSwift could easily make the age of bird spies a reality. Sign of the Times: Little Tikes Kid-Friendly PC Workstation Posted: 09 Apr 2010 03:51 PM PDT I have a two year old child who loves to play on his mother’s laptop. Already, he knows how to access sites like pbskids.org and Disney’s website, and I can tell that by the time he is my age, he will be able to do more with computers than I ever will. At his age, he should be playing with Little Tikes, which is probably why the company has made the Young Explorer Workstation. It is a Windows PC with a 160GB hard drive with 1GB worth of RAM, with a 19-inch LCD display. As you can see in the photo, it appears that the Young Explorer Workstation has some sort of locker for the hard drive tower, presumably. It looks like there is a lock on it so the little one can’t get to it, which is very smart to install. After all, I would figure that the purpose of the Young Explorer Workstation is to keep the little ones away from Mommy and Daddy’s computer. Of course, you will probably need to put a hole in the Workstation for the cord for power, and presumably the Internet connection if they want the kid to do some online surfing. The price tag of this is probably going to prevent its sales, I’m sure. The whole package is $2,599.99. Yes, that is a lot. Cool Gift Idea: Digital Picture Frames, check out our reviews. Posted: 09 Apr 2010 10:00 AM PDT If you have a thing for spy gadgets and toy cars, well then you’re in luck. Brando has released a toy car that happens to have a camcorder built directly into it. I couldn’t really guess as to what you’d really need it for, but perhaps you have someone you’re just dying to catch in the act. Then again, you might just want to be able to brag to your buddies that you own a spy camera. The tiny car comes with a vehicle power adapter, a USB adapter and a very strange looking tripod. I can’t say that I’d recommend using the tripod if you want to keep the car from being inspected too closely though. It also has motion detection and controls built into the wheels themselves. The pinhole lens is on the front of the car and the micro-SD slot is built into the trunk. It offers 29 FPS at 1280 by 960 pixel resolution. You can purchase it for $59 through Brando. Bionaire Litter Box cleans air Posted: 09 Apr 2010 09:00 AM PDT The major reason I don’t have a cat in my small apartment is because I remember all to well how much a litter box can stink up a full-sized house. I couldn’t imagine what it’d do to my place and frankly, I’d rather not find out. Those of you that live in small places or just tend to forget to clean out the litter box might be interested in this new solution. It’ll help make sure that the smell stays under control at all times. This litter box has a built-in air purifier that quietly circulates all of that air that your cat keeps stinking up. It’s quiet enough that it won’t scare off your cat either. Within the box itself, it’s actually a normal litter box. It doesn’t require any special types of kitty litter. When you purchase this box it comes with 2 sets of filters and a 12 foot long power cord. You can purchase the whole set for $97.20 through Amazon. LintAlert Dyer Alarm prevents fires Posted: 09 Apr 2010 08:00 AM PDT A fire within your home is a major fear for most people. After all, you can get all of the insurance in the world, but even if you all make it out without a scratch, your photos and family heirlooms are just gone. No amount of purchasing new furniture will replace all that you’ll lose in a fire. One of the big causes of fires are clothes dryers. The lint builds up and can cause a fire. Apparently every day over 40 dryers catch fire in the USB alone. Which is where the Lint Alert could help keep your family and their possessions safe. The kit comes with a plug-in to go over your regular outlet. Then it also has a small hose and a sensor that attaches to the exhaust conduit (the hose) on your dryer. When lint builds up in that area it’ll go from green to yellow and then onto red, red being the area you really don’t want. Not only could it cause a fire, but it also wastes energy. It’s easy to install and has a mutable alarm when there’s a problem. To pick up one it’ll cost you $49.99 through Amazon.
