Levitatr Portable Bluetooth Keyboard

Posted: 13 Sep 2011 11:29 AM PDT

I must admit that I could not do this post without a physical keyboard with keys. I tried to do a post from my Droid X before, and it just didn’t work.

Apparently, James Stumpf has had the same problem when he was typing on his iPad, and he was on a an airplane when he had a funny yet inspirational thought. What if the keys could just grow up out of the glass?

This is the idea of the Levitatr, a Bluetooth keyboard that can retract its keys when not in use. The idea is to prevent accidental key presses, and keep dirt and crumbs out. You can watch a video of it after the jump, and they really try and make retractable keys as dramatic as possible.

The Levitatr is about 12.5mm thick, and made from an aluminum chassis. As an added bonus, the keys are backlit, and it has a kickstand that will prop up the tablet or the smartphone. It is powered by 4 AA batteries.

Sadly, this is not out now. This is one of the Kickstarter products that needs funding. It needs about $60,000, and a pledge of $79 will get you one for pre-order.

I would love it if every tablet PC has this type of keyboard on it. Perhaps this is the future: keyboards that grow out of touchscreens.

Electrolux concept laptop is also a stove

Posted: 13 Sep 2011 11:07 AM PDT

Electrolux has a Design contest every year, and I take it that they just love concept designs. This laptop is one of the more unusual ones.

I don’t know how practical it is, and you can see how easy it is to describe. It is a laptop that has a stove on it, for crying out loud.

The first thing I could think of was “where is the keyboard”? I was guessing that it needed a separate keyboard, preferably wireless. Yet I have heard that it has touchscreen computer touch controls. You better make sure the burner is off before you start to type.

I have to admit that I like the idea of a stove laptop. I have gone to many conferences, and I wouldn’t mind cooking my own meals instead of eating the high-priced meals around the conferences. The designer, Dagan Trenchevski, has stated that this is exactly what this is supposed to do, and it is good for campers as well.

I don’t know how the battery can work with the burner on. Also, if you shut this thing while the burner is on, will the screen melt? I’m not looking forward to 911 calls where someone says: “I burnt my hand on my laptop!”

Freddie Wong video shows the possible future of video games

Posted: 13 Sep 2011 10:27 AM PDT

Perhaps you have never heard of Freddie Wong before, but he is the winner of the World Series of Video Games in 2007. He is also a filmmaker with two very popular YouTube channels, and he makes some pretty awesome videos.

One of his latest is called Future Motion Control Gaming, and it uses some interesting visual effects to show what could easily be the future. You can watch the video after the jump.

The technology to live out the video doesn’t seem to exist yet. You can see Freddie put on some sort of holographic projector of some type that is able to scan where he is. From there, it can project alien enemies that he shoots up with his PS3 Move.

I’m not certain why Freddie showed his particular set up as somewhat crude. It looks like he uses tape and a laptop to make this gaming apparatus. If this really was the future of gaming, then I would hope it would have a better set-up for it.

I really hope that this is the future of video games. I can’t help but wonder if this will create a new culture where these gamers run around and fight foes that are invisible to everyone but them. One can only hope.

Harry Potter Lord Voldemort Interactive Room Alarm

Posted: 13 Sep 2011 06:30 AM PDT

He who must not be named – well, it is all done and over with for some time already, regardless of whether you are one who reads Harry Potter books or the other type who likes to get all that “reading” done on the silver screen. Either way, the saga has drawn to a close, and Lord Voldemort is but a distant memory. If you want to root for him and his Death Eaters, then perhaps you would do well to check out this Harry Potter Lord Voldemort Interactive Room Alarm – yes sir, the Dark Lord lives again, and boy does he have a fury unmatched if someone so happens to enter your room without permission.

This motion-activated room alarm from the Harry Potter series will feature the very evil Lord Voldemort who cast spells at intruders, spew out some rather scary words and even lights up the environment, boasting all the necessary sound effects to scare away unwanted trespassers. Of course, the $49.99 room alarm will need some juice to keep it running, but I guess you can place many of these alarms all over the place this Halloween if you’re going to throw a Potter-themed party for added effect.

Foetal Heart Detector

Posted: 13 Sep 2011 06:00 AM PDT

There is nothing quite like the feeling of being a new parent, but the nine month journey can be a rather arduous one, especially when complications arise. Many people have sworn that your baby, while still in the womb, is capable of recognizing familiar sounds and voices, but all of that seems to be one way traffic. Parents who want to connect on an even deeper level might want to give the £39.99 Foetal Heart Detector a go – after all, listening to someone’s heartbeat is always soothing, don’t you think so?

I’m quite sure the heartbeat is not all you will listen to – perhaps a hiccup or two might be in order? This seems to be the perfect way of embracing what life inside the womb is like from one’s ears, and all output can even be recorded onto a computer for posterity’s sake. Seems to be an early start in bonding with baby, but you won’t regret every moment since they tend to grow up way too fast.

AT&T to introduce more Windows Phone handsets

Posted: 13 Sep 2011 05:30 AM PDT

Right now when you mention the word ‘smartphones’, most of us would veer to either the iOS platform or the Android-powered handset – with perhaps some people still backing up RIM’s BlackBerry device. Symbian is more or less the stuff of the ancients and Nokia does not seem to be doing much to bring it back to its former glory, and Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7? That is the dark horse in the race – somehow on paper, it does seem to have all the necessary ingredients to succeed, but in real life, that remains to be seen.

Hopefully it will not end up like the Zune which was a solid portable media player by all means, with great software to boot, but somehow, it simply failed to catch on in the mass market. Well, having said that, owning a Windows Phone at the moment might seem like a good idea, and if you are all stoked up to purchase one of these puppies, perhaps you might want to check out what AT&T has in store for you.

AT&T in fact has plans to introduce a new bunch of Windows Phone handsets that are powered by Windows Phone 7.5 – otherwise known as “Mango” in order to keep its current portfolio as fresh as possible. After all, “fruits” are meant to be eaten fresh, no? A trio of new 4G devices (bear in mind that when it comes to the definition of 4G connectivity, it differs from carrier to carrier – AT&T is still stuck at HSPA+ which is more or less 3G+ whereas Verizon’s LTE network is still the fastest among the lot) will sport the AT&T brand, where a couple of these hail from Samsung while the remaining model is from HTC.

The Samsung Focus S will continue where the highest-selling Windows Phone in the US, the Samsung Focus, left off. It will sport a 4.3″ Super AMOLED Plus display, a 1.4GHz processor, 4G-capable speeds as well as a slim profile that nearly rivals the Android-powered Samsung Galaxy S2 at 8.55mm. On the front lies a 1.3-megapixel camera, while the rear has an 8-megapixel camera.

As for the Samsung Focus Flash, this handset will target the value market with its 3.7″ Super AMOLED display, a 1.4GHz processor, a 5-megapixel shooter at the back as well as a front facing camera for video calls and conferences.

HTC’s interpretation of Windows Phone 7.5 would be expressed in the form of the HTC Titan, which at point of publishing, would hold the distinction of having the largest screen in AT&T’s smartphone portfolio at 4.7″. You will be able to watch video from AT&T U-Verse Mobile or play Xbox LIVE games, where the 1.5GHz processor ought to keep things running without a hitch, while an 8-megapixel camera with dual LED flash ought to capture superb images.

Expect these to arrive this fall, so you’d best start to save up for one now!

Fusion Garage Grid10 tablet price plummets to $299

Posted: 13 Sep 2011 05:00 AM PDT

Just how much do you think a tablet should retail for on average? Of course, when you talk about hot stuff like the iPad 2, then half a grand seems to be reasonable, but how about those devices from less famous manufacturers? Surely you have heard of Fusion Garage before somewhere, where the company came up with the Grid10 tablet. It seems that even before the tablet has started to ship, it has already received a price cut.

Yes sir, imagine your wares getting slashed from a reputable $499 all the way down to $299 – and when you think about it, it might as well be a “Buy one at $499 and receive two FREE HP TouchPads!” promotion, considering how HP decided to introduce a really massive price cut to just $99 for the 16GB Wi-Fi only model of their now defunct TouchPad, not too soon after it was released. Well, I certainly hope that the Grid10 will not call it quits so soon, even before it is released! Surely there is a method to this madness?

Word from Fusion Garage pointed out that this price cut was not because the company is desperate to sell their tablets – but rather, it is due to Fusion Garage’s ability to negotiate a better supply chain pricing from its manufacturing partner. Guess the $499 price point was just fodder at the beginning, as in the background, Fusion Garage was working with its ODM on the price point for months, with the intention of announcing the new $299 figure at an August 15th product launch.

Negotiations did not progress as intended, so there was no way an announcement could be made public – at least, until today. I suppose with the new $299 price tag, we will look at it differently and see whether it offers plenty of bang for your hard earned buck in that category, instead of duking it out with the iPad 2 at the premium segment of things.

Shipping of the Grid10 will commence on October 1st because of a two week shipment delay that was created in waiting for the new criteria in Adobe Flash Player 10.3 to get approved under the DCTS testing process. You can check out an interview with Fusion Garage’s CEO on the situation – so it seems that the Grid10 won’t be biting the dust anytime soon, which is always a good thing.
