Control your cell phone with a ring with the Nokia Nenya

When I saw this particular concept product from Finnish cell phone giant Nokia, I thought I was looking at some delayed April Fool’s Joke like the Google Motion. That, or someone really can’t wait for the Green Lantern movie (coming this summer).

Nokia’s Nenya ring allows the user to control their cell phone with a twist of the ring, like a magician. Speaking of magic, the name Nenya apparently is derived from a ring of power that was wielded by Galadriel from The Lord of the Rings.

Of course, there is no magic involved. In fact, the technology is as simple as mounting a magnet inside the ring. The ring can be twisted at 45 degree angles, which allow commands for about 8 different functions. So if you want to change tracks on your music program, or pause them, just give it a twist.

You might notice that ugly thing that goes on your wrist. That is actually a part of the Nenya setup, and it is a Bluetooth bracelet that somehow picks up the orientation of the ring and transmits it to the phone. I wonder if there was a way to put the phone on the bracelet. If nothing else, put a watch on the thing.

As I have mentioned before, this is a concept product for now, and I just don’t know whether or not this will catch on. Leave a comment if you love or hate it.

Do you participate in triathlons as though it was a walk in the park? Those who nod their head in agreement would want to get a timepiece that is capable of living up to their highly active lifestyle – we’re talking about the Garmin Forerunner 610 sports watch. As you know, Garmin deals mostly with GPS navigation systems, and when they aren’t dreaming up of better ways to let you know where you’re going, along comes an idea like a GPS watch.

This slim, robust and weatherproof touchscreen device will cater for serious runners who want an advantage during their routines, as the Garmin Forerunner 610 is capable of shrugging off water like a duck, and is responsive enough to work even when you’re wearing running gloves. Basically, the Forerunner 610 intends to stick to you like a barnacle, coaching you at every single step to help you cross the finish line in the fastest time possible.

The Forerunner 610 lives up to its billing though, since it is capable of “going ahead” of you in some way so that you can figure out the next move as you digest an inflow of basic information including your pace, distance and time, keeping track of your effort via your heart rate. This will help you create interval workouts or perhaps even race a friend who is residing on a different continent from yours.

A vibration motor inside the Forerunner 610 will be able to let you know your training intensity courtesy of the new Training Effect feature. Basically, any well read athlete need not have a coach or sports scientist right beside if you know what to do with the kind of information garnered by the sports watch itself. Also, you can learn to do your best always thanks to Virtual Racer, letting you race yourself or the previous bests of other users – sort of like the ghost function in Mario Kart as you zip around the track to beat your previous best time.

There is no word on pricing just yet for the Garmin Forerunner 610, but with it being a flagship, we don’t think it will be cheap. On the bright side, at least your pockets will be lighter after getting this so that you are more fleet-footed.

Toshiba Tecra 840 laptop delivers performance and style in a single package

Toshiba has been in the mobile computing business for quite some time already, but that doesn’t mean the Japanese company is resting on its laurels. No sir, in fact they have just announced the Toshiba Tecra 840 business laptop that intends to a lightweight body and superior battery life without sacrificing on performance. Touted to be some of the thinnest Toshiba business laptops to date, the Tecra R840 is rather impressive by being around 25% thinner and 20% lighter compared to its predecessor, the Tecra M11.

Of course, being big on performance means not skimping on the processor used, and you will be pleased to know that Toshiba has included the 2nd generation Intel Core processors to choose from, not to mention high-speed 7200 RPM hard drives or the choice of a 128GB SSD and optional AMD Radeon discrete graphics with 1GB of dedicated graphics memory. Connectivity options and ports are aplenty on the Tecra 840, where it will include USB 3.0, an eSATA/USB Combo with Toshiba's USB Sleep & Charge technology, DisplayPort or HDMI, ExpressCard, Gigabit Ethernet and docking connectors – not forgetting Intel AMT 7.0, Bluetooth 3.0+EDR, Intel 802.11 a/g/n Wi-Fi and being Intel Wireless Display capable.

Apart from that, your eyes will definitely appreciate the 14″ diagonal HD LED-Backlit widescreen display, making it one of the more well rounded mobile business laptop that is in the market. Another feather in the cap would be it being the thinnest 14″ Tecra laptop ever manufactured, and when used with a SSD, you can garner up to 11 hours of juice – we’re not sure just how much work the processor goes through to get that kind of figure, so expect real world performance to be less than that.

The Tecra R840 Series will retail from $899 to $1,479 if you’re interested or in need of a new laptop. Bear in mind that this isn’t a gaming laptop, as the display isn’t large enough for a truly immersive experience.

Floating Bean Bag Toss Game

Have all those family games that you play with one another gotten boring and stale? Well, in order to spruce things up this coming summer (applicable to those living in the Northern Hemisphere, of course), how about trying out something different? LEGO Boombox – no blocked up sound from this!

Everyone would surely have come across the perfectly shaped Danish bricks known as LEGO in their lifetime, with most of the involvement coming in when they’re a kid and with their kids many years down the road. Well, it seems that the brand isn’t going to die out anytime soon (far from it, since it is a toy that is limited by your imagination), as there is a new LEGO Boombox released to provide aural entertainment in a cubed form factor.

Retailing for £49.99, the LEGO Boombox is ten times the size of a standard eight stud LEGO brick, and it makes for the perfect living room ornament to boot. Apart from being aesthetically unique, the LEGO Boombox will also be able to handle DVDs, while the integrated AM/FM radio keeps you entertained after you’ve run out of CDs to listen to, as well as the ability to hook up to compatible MP3 players.

Interestingly enough, this device can also stack up with the LEGO Alarm Clock (yet another scaled-up LEGO device). The studs on top of the LEGO Boombox isn’t there for show only, since they can be manipulated to control the volume while tuning in to the AM/FM radio of your choice.
