My Review of the BlueAnt S3 Speakerphone

Posted: 21 Mar 2011 12:24 PM PDT

I have used BlueAnt products before like the Q1 headset, and currently use the T1 Bluetooth headset every time that I make phone calls. However, there are some of us that don't like putting the thing in our ear to make a hands-free call when we are behind the wheel, but the speaker on our cellular phone might not be good enough.

I can only assume that this is why the S3 Speakerphone was made. It comes with a clip for the visor, and designed for making and taking calls while on the road. Considering all the accidents that are the direct result of distracted driving (not just by texting), it’s good to know there are devices for those who hate Bluetooth headsets.

Of course, there are a lot of Bluetooth speakerphones on the market, but what makes the S3 interesting is that it has a vibration sensor, so it knows when the driver is in the car. As soon as the driver gets in the car, his or her phone pairs up, and calls can be made with just a touch. When calls are received, the user/driver can just say "Answer" or "Ignore" to take or not take the call. The user also has the option of listening to podcasts, music and GPS directions.

All in all, a very handy gadget to have around. You should be able to purchase it for a price of $54.27 on Amazon right now.

Review of the Pelican i1015 iPhone case

Posted: 21 Mar 2011 12:16 PM PDT

I have seen all sorts of cases for iDevices. Some of you might remember that one we reported on that seems like the ultimate with the Impervious iPod Speaker Case. The Pelican i1015 may not be as secure as that impervious one, but it does insure that your iPhone is dustproof and crushproof. It will not make it so you can dip your iPhone under water, but it certainly is splashproof.

Part of me wishes that they went the extra mile and made it waterproof, but we can't have it all, can we? I wonder if that was a huge issue when they made this, and they just had to "settle" for protection that is 90% effective. Hey, 90 percent is still an "A" grade.

The i1015 definitely makes it so you can take your mobile phone into a hostile environment. Not only that, it makes it possible so you can listen to headphones while you are in the desert or rain. All you need to do is plug your phone into the headphone jack inside, then plug your headphones on the latch on the outside. It also comes with a lanyard so it can be put on your belt loop.

You should be able to purchase the Pelican i1015 on Amazon for about $19.81, a moderately low price.

The Cobra Tag – Where’s My Stuff?

Posted: 21 Mar 2011 09:57 AM PDT

Okay, I'm pretty good with my mobile phone, and even better with my camera, iPad and laptop. Truth be told, it's my handbag that l lose all the time. (You can see where my priorities are) I just cant keep my hands on that thing. I tried to carry a change purse instead and that was even worse, I'm already into my second set of replacement credit cards this year. Geez.

Welcome, Cobra Tag, a new and different alarm and loss prevention system that utilizes a smartphone app paired via Bluetooth to a small key fob type device.  Users download the Cobra Tag app to their smartphone and then attach the Cobra Tag device to any item they wish to protect, such as car keys, a purse, or laptop bag. The Cobra Tag monitors the distance between the phone and tagged items and produces an audible alert if they become separated. But that's not the best part…

The best part is that the Cobra Tag app can actually record the GPS location and the time of day the items became separated, and sends this information to you via email, text message, or even to a linked Facebook or Twitter account. No word on whether it will read "Dear dummy, you walked away from your stuff again." But I do know that the Cobra Tag also includes a handy two-way finder feature. Pressing a button on the key fob will then ring the paired smartphone, so you're good, as long as you only lose one thing at a time. I have to go now, my wallet is texting me.

Cobra Tag will be available July 2011 for around $59.99.  The associated App will be available via the Android Market at https://market.android.com/.

Ben Heck has new mod for the masses, brings Atari and Xbox 360 together

Posted: 21 Mar 2011 09:56 AM PDT

Most of you who are pretty involved in the modding scene, especially where consoles are concerned, would definitely have heard of Ben Heck and his legendary exploits. Well, even if you’re a casual reader of this site, you would also have read about his previous work that are certainly head and shoulders above what most other modders are capable of. This time around, Ben Heck will attempt to bring the old and the new together in one single device – merging the 1977 Atari console with an Xbox 360. How about that for retro and modern in a single deivce?

His latest episode (yes, he’s gotten famous enough to warrant his very own show!) will see Ben work on a custom mod for Atari that results in creating an Xbox 360 portable laptop that has the look and feel of a 1970s Atari console, where it is capable of handling all of the latest and greatest games that come out on Microsoft’s console, where among them include Yar’s Revenge and Star Raiders.

In the show, Ben will let interested viewers watch the whole build process right from the very start, where it includes designing the system with Adobe Illustrator, routing each piece of the new casing, re-wiring and connecting the Xbox 360 components while testing everything to make sure it plays nice with the circuit board within. Not only that, the new LCD display and backing panel will also need to go through testing to make sure it will fit in properly with the rest of the electronics.

According to Ben, “I was thrilled when Atari approached me to build this unique gaming system – this is the most ‘Ben Heck’ type project I could possibly build. It was a great experience taking consoles from two completely different eras and combining them, not only from a mechanics standpoint, but incorporating the design features to replicate an old Atari. That’s what art’s all about!”

We don’t think this will hit the market anytime soon though – or ever, as it is a one off thing. Unless, of course, you’re an oil baron and want to throw enough dough at him to come up with another one just for you, gold plated and all.

Whistle Key Finder

Posted: 21 Mar 2011 09:30 AM PDT

Are you someone who tends to forget where you left your keys? That can be quite disastrous, especially when you need to call a locksmith in the dead of the night to break down your door simply because you left them inside for the umpteenth time. Definitely not easy on your pockets, and it will drive your landlord nuts (if you rent) and your neighbors will be complaining about all the sound as your door is being hacked down by a power drill.

Well, to prevent such things from happening ever again in the future, how about considering a simple £4.99 purchase that is known as the Whistle Key Finder? This is a pretty self-explanatory device, where all you need to do is whistle and the Key Finder will light up and beep noisily to gain your attention. There is just one problem we have with this – what if you’re hard of hearing, or should you forget that you need to whistle? A single CR2016 battery will power this puppy right from the get go.

Mini Happle Lamp

Posted: 21 Mar 2011 09:28 AM PDT

Now here’s a lamp that definitely looks better than it tastes – after all, it would not bode well for your set of pearly whites if you happen to want to sink your teeth into it! This £29.99 purchase that will come in either red or green colors is known as the Mini Happle Lamp, where it will definitely bring a fresh burst of flavour to your home. The apple-shaped lamp is capable of casting a nice, warm glow regardless of where you place it, and it would be equally comfortable in the kitchen as it is in your living room or even acting as a bedside lamp.

The simple design will appeal to folks from all walks of life (and age to boot), and we would love to see a version that has someone already chomped off a bite – won’t the legal eagles over at Steve Job’s little empire be all over it by then?

The Amazon App Store – Coming Soon?

Posted: 21 Mar 2011 09:22 AM PDT

I have to admit I love my iPad, it is far from a perfect gadget, but it's fun nonetheless, especially since I really only use it for games and entertainment. Of course it’s getting pretty costly loading all that stuff on my iDevice, iTunes is expensive and limiting, but the Android Market just doesn’t seem as user friendly, that’s about to change, IF rumors are correct.

It seems that Amazon is getting close to launching an Android app store, and it's going to sell some Android apps for less than the Google Marketplace, according to some leaked screenshots. Android News posted the screenshots several days ago after "accidently" visiting  www.amazon.com/apps and finding a page listing about 48 Android apps for sale. Amazon has since redirected that URL to its home page, but not before Android News was able to grab some screenshots.

If the prices shown in the screenshots are in fact accurate, then Amazon will actually be selling some of the apps for less than on Google's Android Market and even have a few apps that they don't. No doubt that Amazon could be a force to reckon with. Although they have been in trouble for selling Kindle books for discounted prices, they already offer some free movies, and discounted MP3's. This might be just enough for me to break down and finally get a tablet. I’ve really wanted one anyway, but which one?

The Hologram Kit – Not From a Galaxy Far, Far Away

Posted: 20 Mar 2011 06:56 PM PDT

I don't know how old most of you were when Star Wars came out, but I'm sure most of you saw it. Does everyone remember the scene where Chewbacca and R2-D2 play that holographic chess game? Well, now you can make your own holograms with the help of this innovative kit. It seems like some kits have been around for a little while, but who knew you could make holograms at home? Not me.

This kit has everything you need to make an actual 3D laser hologram included, and it doesn't seem like the process is too difficult, it actually seems easy enough to be done for say, a school project. Once you get the kit home, you can start making holograms right away! Check out the video HERE .

With Litiholo Film, NO processing and NO chemicals are required. To make a hologram, laser light is split into two different beams. One is reflected off of an object onto the film, while the other beam goes directly to the film. The two beams meet on film, causing a patterns of light and dark lines. The film captures this pattern, which is the hologram. Then, in order to view it, remove the object and turn the laser light on again. You’ll see an amazing 3D image, as if the object is still there.

You can also add an Upgrade Package, available separately, for increased capabilities. Includes a 10-pack of film at no extra change. Extra film is also sold separately. Lithiholo refill Pack includes 20 – 2′ X 3″ glass plates for making even more holograms.

Available for under a $120.00 bucks from www.x-tremegeek.com
