Intel unveils next generation Atom platform

Posted: 21 Dec 2009 07:28 PM PST

intel-atomIntel’s Atom processor has been pretty successful so far to say the least, and the current worldwide leader in processors are certainly not going to rest on their laurels – hence coming up with a next generation Intel Atom platform. This will be the first Intel processors that see the integration of graphics as well as a memory controller in the CPU, which in turn results in power reduction, smaller systems and performance jumps. This higher level of integration alongside the inclusion of 45nm manufacturing will see the average power consumption go down to 20% over the previous generation, which will certainly carve a smile on netbook manufacturers’ faces as their products will experience a longer battery life.

We can expect to see major OEMs roll out netbooks with the new Intel Atom processors within the next few weeks, so those who want to own a new netbook might want to hold off their purchases for a while more if the situation has yet to reach the urgent and critical level, as chugging along to a new processor is always much better compared to running on something older. The latest Intel Atom platform for netbooks will comprise of a new Intel Atom processor known as the N450, alongside a new low-power Intel NM10 Express Chipset. For those who are looking at entry level desktop PCs, you can choose from the Intel Atom processor D410 or the dual core D510, where it will also be paired with the Intel NM10 Express Chipset.

What’s the big deal about these new Atom processors, you ask? Well, one of the most significant features would be the integration of memory controller and graphics into the CPU, making it a first in the industry on x-86 chips. This results in significant cost reductions, a smaller average footprint and being more power efficient to keep in line with the green theme. We can’t wait to see what kind of desktops that will be released with this new processor, especially their design and how they would fit into everyday life.

You-Vision Video Glasses

You-Vision-Glasses_1

When you’re trying to capture those perfect moments, getting out a camera always seems to take two minutes too long.  By the time it’s out, the moment has passed and you don’t even have any proof that it ever happened.  Now you can wear a video camera on your head at all times.  Don’t worry, it doesn’t require you to strap a conventional camera to your head.  Instead it’s a pair of glasses with the camera inside of them.

Just flip the switch on the top of the frames and it’ll start recording your day.  Although I wouldn’t suggest recording your full day.  When you start recording that much it becomes a bit of a narcissistic obsession.  Plus you’d have to unload the 2GB of memory every 5 hours.  This records both video and audio and will work with both a PC and a Mac.  You can purchase the glasses for $149 from Photojojo.

Fisher-Price Power Wheels Cadillac Escalade EXT

Posted: 21 Dec 2009 01:10 PM PST

FisherPrice-Power-wheels-Cadillac-Escalade

For a little kid, having a battery powered vehicle is as good as it gets.  Nevermind that the battery takes an eternity to charge and only keeps the device powered for what seems like a very short time.  It’s the fact that a kid can hop in a vehicle, with a friend and go round and round the yard to their heart’s content.  Well for those kids that aren’t satisfied with any old normal toy, now they can have a Cadillac branded one.

It’s not just any type of Cadillac, it’s an Escalade.  Nothing quite screams rich kid like a Power Wheels Cadillac Escalade EXT.  It would help if the child was actually a rich kid for them to be able to afford the amount of cash it’ll cost to put this under the Christmas tree.  It has 2 working doors and 2 seats, so they can have a friend with them.  It also has a working FM radio and a battery charge indicator that lets you know when it’s time to charge it up again.  The 12 volt battery can make the vehicle go up to 5 mph.  You can purchase the Escalade for $399 from Amazon.

MATTRACKS: Scooter through the Snow

Posted: 21 Dec 2009 05:43 AM PST

powerboardIf you can’t wait until summer to try the Chariot Skates, then you may might want to see this product that is made for the winter snow.

The MATTRACK can best be described as a scooter, but with a tank tread instead of wheels so it will go through the snow. It has a handle on it so it can steer, and the frame is mounted on a tread in a way where the user can lean to make turns as well. There is a video of it in action after the jump if you want to see it for yourself.

It is designed for the winter sports enthusiast like snowboarders, but the MATTRACK doesn’t have any thing to clamp to the user’s feet. Instead, it has a metal grill of a thing that ought to hold the rider. If the rider falls off, there is a tether to turn off the power so the MATTRACKS doesn’t go away from the rider.

The MATTRACKS also has come convenient carrying handles so the user can tote it around easily enough when he or she is not on the snow.

I have no idea what this thing runs on, nor how much this costs. All I know is that it looks like a lot of fun, and I’m probably going to get a lot of snow this year. Why shouldn’t I have fun with it on a MATTRACKS?

Chariot Skates combine both biking and skating

Posted: 21 Dec 2009 05:08 AM PST

chariot_skatesI can see why they call these Chariot skates. If this guy in the photo were to squat down, he would look like a prop from a modern day Ben-Hur. That, or someone in a wheelchair without a seat.

As it is, the Chariot Skates are designed to hold your legs as strongly as a foot inside of a skiboot. As you can see, it sort of combines a bicycle with a rollerblade. The wheel is a pneumatic tire, and each of the skates weigh about 5.5 pounds each.

The purpose of these big and small wheels is to create a kind of mega-skate that is able to take on terrain like grass, and I would imagine gravel and sand.

According to the official site, the Chariot Skates “gain and maintain momentum with less effort, greater stability and more maneuverability”. The site of Chariot Skates Ltd. also says that the skates have “secured an exclusive license to manufacture and distribute the patented Wheel-skates product” and “is currently undertaking pre-production testing and turning before unleashing this prod cut on the market”.

In other words, it will probably be a while before this particular product hits the market. My Source predicts the Chariot Skates will be available in June, but we will see. So far, there is no word on the price.

Picture Table folds up, grants more space

Posted: 21 Dec 2009 04:35 AM PST

PictureTable02-thumb-550x825-30389Some of you might remember the classic Seinfeld episode where Kramer makes a coffee table book about coffee tables, a book with four fold-out legs that can, in fact, become a coffee table.

It would appear that someone has taken a similar idea by taking an ordinary kitchen table and allowing it to fold up so it can become a poster. You will note how the legs neatly and conveniently fold into the frame, just like Kramer’s unpublished coffee table book.

If you have to ask why someone would have a Picture Table, then you clearly have too much money. For those of us that can only afford to live in very small living places, space is valuable, and often not around when it is needed. Having some free space in the kitchen when the kitchen table is not being used would come in handy at my place for sure.

Personally, I believe that this is the way of the future for all small apartments. That is, fold up furniture that makes use of the space that isn’t being used in favor of the space that is. Just picture a dining room that can fold up so you can watch a movie on a fold-out home theater.

Looftlighter

Posted: 21 Dec 2009 04:30 AM PST

looftlighterThere is nothing quite like sitting around a campfire, roasting marshmallows with a cup of hot chocolate in another hand while having good company all around. Of course, the fire is there to provide ambience as well as warmth as stories are shared all around to much laughter and joy. That’s the ideal situation, but how about rewinding it backwards by a couple of hours while you frantically sweat it out to get a sustainable fire going? This is where the Looftlighter comes in, where it takes around 15 seconds to get a fire going. Basically, this handheld electric firestarter doesn’t require any flame, but will instead put out air and heat in excess of 1,000 Fahrenheit! Needless to say, we would recommend you keep this $79.99 device out of reach of children due to its dangerous nature if left in unsafe hands.

S&J Co. offers Eggy portable mini speakers

Posted: 21 Dec 2009 04:00 AM PST

eggy

How many designs can a pair of speakers come in? S&J Co. of Korea decided to take a different route instead of settling for the usual boxy or rectangular shape with the Eggy portable mini speakers. This 20mm micromini unit is insanely small, packing in an impressive 4 watt of RMS alongside an integrated digital amp for all your portable audio needs. This will squarely target the notebook and netbook market which have speakers that leave much to be desired, although that too is changing these days. Since it draws power from a USB port, there is no need to pick up another adapter with you on your travels, although it will put your notebook and netbook battery under additional strain.
