Posted: 10 Dec 2009 04:24 PM PST Do you get the feeling of being watched all the time even when you’re all alone in your home? Well, you can further enhance that creepy experience with the Eye Clock, where a pair of pupils will replace the hands of a clock to indicate the current time. For example, the left eye will ‘look’ towards the current hour, while the right eye ‘looks’ to the minutes. Needless to say, you are going to get plenty of laughs out of this especially when it is 9.15 or 3.15 (regardless of whether morning or at night), with the pupils looking in crazy, zany directions. This is one of the cooler desktop clocks to date, and will definitely work out great in giving you some laughs (maybe just smiles, but you get the idea) throughout the day. The Eye Clock is going for £19.99 on Firebox. Coolest Gadgets UK – For all your UK centric tech and gadget news. [ Eye Clock copyright by Coolest Gadgets ] | ||||||||||||

Touch wood that you will never get involved in an accident, but if you do, then the 911 Medical ID card will definitely come in handy. How so, you ask? Well, assuming you suffer from a severe allergic reaction or have previously been impaired due to a medical emergency such as a stroke, heart attack or seizure, you won’t be able to relay that information yourself to emergency medical personnel who attend to you. With the 911 Medical ID card, first responders, emergency room doctors, or other medical personnel will be able to access that information by plugging it into a computer via USB. Yup, you read that right – despite measuring a mere 2mm thin, the 911 Medical ID card which can fit into your wallet like a credit card can transfer important medical information to another computer so that the right diagnosis can be made. This will certainly go a long way in reducing misdiagnoses while saving valuable time and perhaps even reduce the cost of medical care as the healthcare industry moves more toward electronic records. Not only that, this is an uber affordable Christmas gift with a heart, especially when it retails for a mere $39.99. Coolest Gadgets UK – For all your UK centric tech and gadget news. NEC offers two new professional installation projectors Posted: 10 Dec 2009 04:10 PM PST
First off, the NP2200 – this model is capable of displaying a high level of brightness at 4,200 ANSI lumens, followed by the NP1200 which has a lower output of 3700 lumens. Either way, both models are very bright in their own right, making them the perfect choice for corporate and higher education environments. Eco-minded corporations and individuals will be pleased to know that both models are also energy-efficient, consuming a low 0.4W rating in standby mode by utilizing ECO Mode technology in order to help keep our planet green. All energy savings are documented through the integrated carbon savings meter where you can enable via an optional message at startup. Alternatively, users can also switch between settings via a green ECO Mode button on the remote control. In order to offer maximum flexibility for installers, the NP2200 and NP1200 will come with optional bayonet style lenses for quick and easy exchange. The range of optional lenses are capable of supporting screen sizes from 40″ to 500″ at projection distances between 2.8-feet and 304-feet. Apart from that, the vertical and horizontal lens shift feature also enables flexible projector placement which caters for a variety of installation locations in a room. You will also be pleased to note that both machines boast flexible input/output signal capabilities, ranging from connectors for VGA to DVI-D with HDCP, 5-BNC, multiple audio in/out and RJ45 network control. With the inclusion of a Virtual Remote (DDC/CI), users are able to control the projector directly from a computer sans pesky additional control cables. Expect the NP2200 and NP1200 to ship this month for $2,399 and $1,999, respectively. Cool Gift Idea: Digital Picture Frames, check out our reviews. Electrolux Silent Vacuum concept has iPod dock Posted: 10 Dec 2009 03:48 PM PST What you are seeing there is not some crazy iPod dock, but a vacuum cleaner. This is a new concept vacuum cleaner from Electrolux known as the Silent Vacuum. The Silent Vacuum is simply a step up from the UltraSilencer, a model that is readily available. Of course, we all know from vacuuming that it really sucks, and even though no one can hear you scream in a vacuum of space, every in your house can hear you when you’re vacuuming. So, if the job of sucking up dust must be done, why not put a fun spin on it, and put an iPod on the thing. In fact, after the jump is a video of a somewhat scientific study of what happens when you mix music and vacuuming. They found that people danced to the rhythm, and moved their hips. This resulted in more calories being burned. Plus, hard rock made them work faster. Oddly enough Jazz music make the vacuum people more precise. All of these adds up to less stress. I’m guessing that Electrolux is probably moving forward on this model, and we’ll soon see a vacuum cleaner with an iPod dock. However, can’t you just wear your iPod and earbuds? Granted, the vacuum won’t be charging your iPod, but you will have the same effect, right? Tegu uses both wooden blocks and magnets Posted: 10 Dec 2009 03:16 PM PST I’ve reported on some advancements in building blocks before, such as the MUJI kits that blend hard paper with Lego bricks. Here is a new development for building blocks that I’ve never seen before, but really should have. You know those terrific castles that your kids build out of blocks, the type that constantly fall over? Well, imagine if there was a way to lock the blocks together. I’m not talking about Lego, which uses those bumpy things, but magnets. Yes, the Tegu is designed to lock together magnetically, so they have a little more resilience than your typical wooden blocks. I can’t imagine the Tegu structures being too solid, but it is a lot better than just gravity. Best of all, the shapes of the blocks are more than just rectangles, but cubes and flat pieces for some very creative models that you can see in the picture. If you want it, the Tegu kits come in the three forms. The first is the Starter Set with 26 blocks in 3 shapes which include cubes, long planks, and short planks. The Original Set has 52 blocks in 4 shapes, and adds long planks. As for the Limited Edition Mahogany Set, it’s a bigger one. The prices of these are $50, $85, and $125, respectively. Star Wars Republic Squadron motion-controlled game Posted: 10 Dec 2009 02:42 PM PST Man, there has got to be at least 100 video games that bear the name Star Wars, so does the world really need another one? Apparently, it does. Of course, this one isn’t made for the big three consoles, but designed to connect to the television via the composite ports. You really have to use the Force to play this game, because it is completely motion-controlled. So now you can play like the kid in the picture and pretend the screen is an actual window and the controller is really controlling a starship. Sometimes you are the gunner in the game, and sometimes you are the pilot. I wish that this game was based more on the original trilogy rather than that Clone Wars sub-franchise that just refuses to go away. Even though the motion control might give the player a sense of realism, I have been told that the graphics are equal to the Sega Genesis. But it’s all good! Do we really need the coolest graphics to have the best gaming experience? Well, this might be a good gift for a Star Wars/Clone Wars fan on your list this year. It will cost about $30 and does not include 4 AA batteries. Cool Gift Idea: Digital Picture Frames, check out our reviews. Ucreate Music turns kids into music producers Posted: 10 Dec 2009 01:00 PM PST If you have a music obsessed kid in the family, then this gift is bound to keep their attention for a while. It’ll allow them to make their own music in a similar fashion that an actual music producer would. It also gives them a way to share the music that they’ve made with the rest of the world. The toy is meant for not just kids, but teens as well. The digital music-making system is created to be easy to use for kids. Of course not for kids under the age of 8. However, those above that age will be able to create their own music and then share it on the website myucreate.com. The website also has a huge online library so they can build from a collection of tracks, special effects and filters. Encouragingly enough, the device has received great reviews from parents that purchased the toy for their kids. You can purchase the Ucreate Music toy for about $31. Audio Can Speakers put a playful spin on things Posted: 10 Dec 2009 11:18 AM PST If modern and sophisticated aren’t really your thing, you’ll love these speakers. Instead of buying something that looks like every other speaker out there, you could have one that is bound to make a memorable statement. Plus, despite having that homemade look to it, you won’t actually have to make this a weekend project. You can purchase one already made for you. The Audio Can is not meant to be taken too seriously though, it’s meant to be a playful version of your usual portable loud speakers. This speaker finds itself crammed inside of a food can. It has a 9V battery and an audio cable with the normal 3.5mm connector. You can hook this up on its own or you can connect more than one of these to create a surround sound type feel. These come with a yellow label, green and grey. You can purchase one of these for £ 27.50 or about $45. Source: GeekyGadgets Conference Calendar – The global conference and expo finder. Forklift Challenge pits one forklift against each other Posted: 09 Dec 2009 07:28 PM PST I once spent a summer working at a warehouse, and it was during this time where I learned to drive a forklift. I remember that I felt pretty dang good after it, because the controls on the forklift weren’t exactly instinctive. I also discovered that some jobs at work were a little bit more fun with the application of a forklift. Granted, it was still work, but knowing how to ride a forklift gave me a little more clout on the job. People just assumed that if you were driving a forklift, then you had experience. This Forklift Challenge game manages to put the fun of the forklifts, but on a board game scale. In this game, players take control of a miniature forklift via tiny remote control. The object is to move your boxes from one side of the board to the other before your opponent. It’s an epic battle between forklift and forklift. Now, you can play the game any way you want. For example, there is nothing against the rules saying that you can try and push your opponent’s forklift away, or move his or her boxes away. Granted, you can’t spend all your time on completely defensive moves, or the game will last forever. You should be able purchase the the Forklift Challenge game at the Solutions website for about $34.95. Lumino Project takes Microsoft Surface to the next dimension Posted: 09 Dec 2009 06:58 PM PST This is the Lumino project, a new way of interacting with the Microsoft Surface. In fact, it takes it to a whole new dimension: the third one. You mean that there is more to do with a Surface than shifting two-dimensional images? Absolutely! Not only can the Lumino project recognize a three-dimensional object on the table, but it can recognize when one object is put on top of the other. So far, it seems good enough to make various structures in three-dimensional space. Sort of like playing with Lego with a computer that recognizes what you are building with the bricks. That is about as good as another use the developers found: a checkers game. That’s right, it can recognize when players are “kinged”, and it can even give the player an idea of the best moves to make in the game. Think that is pretty much useless? So do I. However, I did see one application that looked very interesting. This guy used a cylinder to make a dial control on a picture on the Surface, and was able to control the brightness and contrast. I realize that I didn’t describe it very well, but check out the video at the Source, and you can read and see more about it. Posted: 09 Dec 2009 06:38 PM PST Okay, take two minutes out of your busy schedule to watch this robot using some major-league telekinesis. Chances are, you’ll probably be thinking what I’m thinking: I didn’t realize droids could be Jedis too. As you might have guessed, the Airbot, as it is called, uses the same technology as the Mindflex that we reported on back at CES last January. I have to admit, I don’t think that accuracy in ballistics was part of Mindflex or the Star Wars Force Trainer, a similar product. I also don’t remember these toys being able to peel an onion. The Airbot also has the ability to use its air-stream to lift any object weighing up to 188 grams and 97mm in radius. Airbot was the creation of two University of Illinois students Aaron Becker and Robert Sanheinrich, as well as the help of their professor, Timothy Bretl. It was first on display at IROS 2009 (IEEE/RSJ International Conference on Intelligent RObots and Systems). Sure, it may be in the development stages for now, but applications for this are pretty endless. Just think of an age where robots use their telekinetic powers to bus dishes from tables. That, or carry all sorts of stuff from here to there. Coolest Gadgets UK – For all your UK centric tech and gadget news. [ Airbot is a robot X-man copyright by Coolest Gadgets ] |
