Live Checking Card monitors your spending, on the card itself

Posted: 15 Feb 2010 02:11 PM PST

As you might have guessed, this is only a concept. In fact, this is downright Minority Report technology.

This is the Live Checking Card, a card that will physically display the spending amount on the card after every purchase.

The display is powered by e-ink technology and uses RFID to sync with your bank account.

So, if you are going to make a purchase, and not certain if you can afford it, just look at your card before you buy it.

In all honesty, I’m not certain that this is a good thing if a thief were to suddenly “acquire” this card. A large number would probably give a thief the motivation to buy a whole lot of stuff.

In a way, this reminds me of the Chase Mastercard commercial where this guy takes out his Mastercard and uses it as if it were some sort of augmented reality mobile device.

In other words, if we can have a card wirelessly put the spending amount on the card, then can’t we make it so the card can do checking/savings transfers, bill pay, and other online account transactions?

Yeah, I suppose that there should be an app for this, but I’m pretty sure that there are at least five. Still, if this card does become reality, then I think all banks should required that their customers be card holders.

Turn your car into a tank

Posted: 15 Feb 2010 01:41 PM PST

This next device is the best thing to come out of Russia since the those Daywatch and Nightwatch films.

This contraption is able to take an ordinary car and turn it into a tank. Apparently, it uses a continuous tracked platform to create a better monster truck than the Legendary Bigfoot.

Too bad you can’t just drive up on this thing with a pair of ramps and be tank treads. According to my source, the wheels must be taken off the car in order to get this to work, so I’m guessing that the axle needs to be attached to this somehow.

I can imagine a good use for this. You see, I always had this idea that I was going to buy a big house out in the middle of nowhere and drive out to Costco every few months for supplies. Now, if it snows really hard, how am I going to get out of my driveway?

Tank treads, that’s how! Yeah, my car’s a tank now! How do you like that, other motorists? Oh, you want to pass me? Oh, I’ll pass over you. Monster truck madness! Yeah.

Anyway, there is a video below, but it is sadly all in Russian. But it is enough to show how it will work.

I can’t imagine putting anything but a truck on this. I wouldn’t mind seeing a picture of a Fit or Volkswagen on tank treads.

Black Box cleans hands and feet in seconds

Posted: 15 Feb 2010 01:22 PM PST

I’m going to tell you something that I’m not exactly ashamed of, but I’m not proud of it. You see, I hate washing my hands.

Maybe it’s because I’m on the go constantly, and barely have time to use the restroom. However, if I had one of these black boxes (not to be confused with the ones used on airplanes), then hand sanitation would be a snap.

This box uses plasma gas, the same type of plasma clearning that is used to sterilize medical instruments. This box allows the user to sanitize one’s hands in just four seconds.

This thing is good for drug-resistant strains, MRSA, or even Athlete’s Foot. In fact, the researchers who made it says that it can get rid of Athlete’s Foot without the user ever removing a sock.

It is a real shame that this tech isn’t for the typical consumer, but rather for hospitals, hotels, and any other business that has to rely on cleanliness. You know that sign that says: “Employees must wash hand before returning to work”. Just imagine a sign saying: “Employees must scan their hands after using the facilities”.

The way of the future, this is. Let’s use technology to get rid of those every day stupid activities like washing hands or brushing teeth. I hope that this sanitation tech will catch on to the regular consumer, as I could use a little more clean in my home.

The Stackable Water Bottle

Posted: 15 Feb 2010 06:56 AM PST

This is one of those designs that’s so incredibly brilliant it makes you feel like a moron.  Honestly, how is it that no one thought of this before?!  Especially companies that have to deal with these bottles on a regular basis.  It’s one thing for an average person to overlook this idea, but it’s surprising that no water cooler companies have come up with this.

The Stackable Bottle would make it possible to stack several bottles on top of each other and save a whole lot of space.  Instead of having to use extra materials to make them stack, everything you’d need would already be built into the bottle.  Plus for those using these at home or in the office, once these are in the water cooler you could use the bottom as a cute vase.  This was designed by Yujin Kim, who hopefully will get companies to switch to this design soon.

Panasonic Portable Neck Massager

Posted: 15 Feb 2010 05:47 AM PST

It would be nice if you could just carry around a personal masseuse everywhere you go.  One that could drop everything and rub your neck at any time of the day.  It’d be even better if it only cost you one small fee to do this endlessly.  Unfortunately that is slightly unrealistic, but at least Panasonic has come up with a portable neck massager.  We’ll call it a happy medium.

This comes in grey, bright green and even pink.  The pretty little neck massager requires a pair of CR2032 batteries to keep it up and running.  The unfortunate side of the gadget is that it’s through Panasonic’s Japanese division.  As of now it doesn’t appear that this is available anywhere but there.  Hopefully it’ll find its way to other regions of the world though.

VTech comes up with new range of toys

Posted: 15 Feb 2010 05:30 AM PST

Kids love toys, and even when boys ge older, they too, have a wide range of toys that they would want to play with, albeit with a much more expensive price tag. VTech is back with a bang, offering a bunch of new toys at the International Toy Fair in New York City. Among the more notable toys talked about would be the MobiGo, a touch-screen handheld game console, while its FLiP (as pictured above) is the first children’s animated e-reader in the world (which won’t prove to be a threat to the iPad or Kindle, definitely), alongside a slew of other releases. We will take a closer look at the FLiP after the jump.

First off, the FLiP is supposed to be the first animated e-reader for kids in the world, targeting those who fall between the 3 to 7 age bracket. It will cost $59.99 each, and won’t require an Internet connection since there is no virtual book store for you to download stuff from. The FLiP is meant to let new readers have fun learning and practicing their skills, as kids are able to engage with stories by watching, reading and learning. Apart from that, they will be able to follow along with their favorite animated characters, enjoying an interactive reading game while cross-referencing with the story dictionary to help with the context of the stories without asking for a parent’s help. There will be 11 software titles available at launch, and they are The Little Engine That Could, Disney/Pixar’s Cars, Shrek, Dora the Explorer, Disney/Pixar’s Toy Story 3, Disney Princesses, Olivia, Disney Fairies, Mr. Men and Little Miss, Scooby-Doo and Mickey Mouse Clubhouse.

Parents too will be able to participate in the learning process through the use of online progress reports and reading certificates. You can download more stories for the FLiP through a story download library that is located on the VTech Web site, where among them would be free. The library is tipped to grow constantly, where kids will be able to choose from a bunch of compelling stories to help them develop their vocabulary.

POCKETRAK W24 and C24 Portable Recorders

Posted: 15 Feb 2010 05:00 AM PST

Yamaha does not only make great motorbikes, they are also able to churn out audio devices and sound systems. Well, to add another gizmo to their list of achievements would be the Pocketrak W24 and C24 portable recorders, touted to produce great sound in a compact package. Both of these new convenient, reliable and unique portable recording devices were the result of deep thought and design, where those who laid their eyes (and hands, thereafter) on it were pleasantly surprised at how tiny and useful it was. The Pocketrak C24 and W24’s respective predecessors were the 2G and CX.

The C24 comes with an omnidirectional microphone which is basically the most suitable choice for most applications in schools, houses of worship and all-in-one recording needs. It is touted to be the smallest 24 bit/96KHz recorder on the market, where each purchase will be accompanied by a mounting adaptor. Apart from that, the C24 is also the only portable recorder which is light enough to attach to a mic or music stand. You can also hook it up directly into a USB port, doing away with the need for an additional cable. Does this sound like it is one of the most convenient professional quality stereo digital recorder available?

As for the W24, you will get a wireless remote controller with it as that particular add-on sure comes in handy in selected situations. As an added bonus, it is also equipped with a Scene Memory function which is capable of recalling the settings for a particular recording session or location automatically. When recording in MP3 mode, you will be able to get up to 27 hours of audio.

Both models will include value-added features such as a metronome, an instrument tuner, 2GB of internal memory (which is expandable thanks to a miniSD memory card slot) , a Peak Limiter that avoids distortion on sudden loud passages and a High Pass Filter that eliminates low frequency noise on recordings. With the Speed Change function , one can speed up or slow down MP3 playback without effecting a change in pitch, which is similar to high-priced guitar training machines that allows guitarists to practice a demanding barrage of notes or chord changes at a slower pace.

Love Toast makes everyday Valentine’s Day

Posted: 15 Feb 2010 04:00 AM PST

What’s your favorite kind of breakfast? Some of us love bacon and eggs, and what’s a plate of that without any toast? The Love Toast set works just fine, as it allows you to make everyday Valentine’s Day whenever you prepare breakfast for your loved one.

All you have to do is get to your loved one’s slice of seeded granary before they do and stamp your message of love in the middle and you’re golden. A simple, fun way to tell the one you love that, well, you love them more than toast (which is probably quite a lot for most people). We all know that all food tastes better with love, so if you can actually put love on the food then it’s bound to taste amazing. Just make sure you don’t stick in the toaster.

While it costs a mere £2.99, it would definitely brighten up the day, especially after a monster argument the night before.

Your T-Shirts Turned Into Laptop Sleeves

Posted: 15 Feb 2010 03:53 AM PST

In the very back of most of our closets is a stash of t-shirts.  You never wear them, but some are probably high school or college t-shirts.  They’re reminders of all of the activities you used to enjoy, so you keep them.  Despite that they’re never worn, they’re still in there.  Well now you can do something useful with those t-shirts.  You’ll get to see them every day without wearing them.

Don’t worry, considering what all they do for you, it is a pretty affordable process.  First you just purchase a laptop sleeve in either 13", 15" or 17".  Then they’re even kind enough to send you a pre-paid envelope that you send your t-shirt of choice within.  Once they receive it they’ll sew a custom sleeve just for you.  It’ll only cost you $49.  Keep in mind though, big laptop sleeves will require larger t-shirts.

SpecOps Systems unveil new iKey prototype

Posted: 14 Feb 2010 10:10 PM PST

SpecOps Systems has a special aim in its corporate sphere – that is, to design rugged, wearable computer technology which is capable of offering enhanced situational awareness of the battle space for military soldiers while they are in the heat of the battlefield. The special WC2 computer system works pretty much like an extremely powerful desktop computer, although this one is way more portable compared to those netbooks and notebooks businessfolk tote about, since it was specially designed to be worn on the arm and carried by a soldier while he is in the thick of action for extended periods of time.

The summer of 2009 was when SpecOps Systems was asked by a customer for a WC2 computer, albeit with the added capability of an integrated keyboard. This request is now a reality, albeit in a prototype form factor as this point in time. The keyboard was specially made to be small enough to fit within the system without sacrificing on functionality, where it was built sturdily in a durable form factor which will be able to work just fine for extensive use in harsh environments. To do so, SpecOps Systems had to look to iKey for a solution considering iKey had experience with the military, and already have a somewhat similar unit to what was requested.

The result from SpecOps Systems would be the working prototype known as the KYB-170-OEM. This ultra-compact keyboard measures a mere 2.55″ x 2.75″ x 0.22″, and is filled to the brim with functionality. While the initial prototype was delivered as “production ready”, there is no need for engineering changes to the firmware, printed circuit board or mechanical drawings. Being completely sealed to NEMA 4X specifications, it is resistant to dirt, dust, liquids and other ingress when given the proper installation procedures. Would be interesting to know how much the thing costs in real life though, but can soldiers blog on this?

Volvo XC70 to get online Rear Seat Entertainment System

Posted: 14 Feb 2010 10:01 PM PST

Volvo has developed a solid reputation for being an extremely safe vehicle to be in, and the 2010 Volvo XC70 goes one up by being one of the first vehicles in the world that will boast an Internet-connected Rear Seat Entertainment System, powered by Windows XP. It will hook up to the Internet via a Wi-Fi connection while featuring a 500GB hard drive (pretty spacious, I must say). While this innovative product still remains in the conceptual phase, it will enable customers to surf the Internet while they’re on the road, downloading applications to personalize their Volvo to their lifestyle while enjoying video as well as unlimited music downloads thanks to a digital touchscreen display. Apart from that, the RSEi-500 also enables customers to hook up their vehicle to their home computer, which would in turn allow video, audio and other home data content to be transferred to the vehicle’s on board computer in a jiffy.

Volvo Cars of North America has also forged a working relationship with Azentek Corporation and Gracenote in order to further explore the possibility of bringing this revolutionary product to the market. You will be able to check out a demonstration of the Volvo XC70 at the Chicago Auto Show, where it hooks up to the Internet using turbocharged speeds that is found in the Sprint 4G via its new Overdrive 3G/4G Mobile Hotspot.

This new development ought to keep those backseat drivers occupied (and quiet, since their attention will be riveted on whatever they’re listening to or watching instead of nagging you on which road to take as well as how fast/slow you’re going), letting them navigate their music collections by mood, and display lyrics in North America, artist biographies as well as reviews of the current music being played. All this talk is making the Volvo XC70 shape up to be a pretty interesting vehicle to purchase in the near future. Let’s hope the motor company doesn’t go under before it arrives in whatever country you’re residing in.

Fish School

Posted: 14 Feb 2010 09:38 PM PST

It does make us wonder where does the term “a school of fish” come from, but with news of the Fish School arriving, we’re more than excited to see just what is being taught. Apparently, acrobatics ranks high on the list, as this incredible training kit ought to get your fish much more agile compared to just swimming around lazily in the tank.

The kit is an excellent concept that allows you to set up a training regime for your fish. It’s based on a trial and reward scheme, so it’s not much different from training any other animal. There’s an extremely detailed set of instructions and a DVD to help get you started, which is a good thing as there are over ten tricks you can teach your fish, including swimming through hoops and tunnels, slalom, even basketball and football! Once you’ve mastered all of them, who knows what you could get your fishy friends to do? If only there were a MENSA for fish…

At £24.99 each, we doubt anyone has achieved success with any of their finned friends. What do you think?
