PowerPak from Technocel

Posted: 25 Feb 2010 04:16 PM PST

Technocel has created the “ultimate universal charging solution” that combines “a backup rechargeable battery pack with a rapid home charger”.

I had a chance to try the Powerpak out for myself, and it is essentially is a tiny black box that goes into any power outlet. From there, it will charge up like a battery, so it can be used later for about three hours of talk time.

The PowerPak kit comes with a lot of tips to power a lot of phones, and it is capable of other mobile devices including ones from Samsung, Motorola, LG, Nokia, BlackBerry, HTC, Palm, Nextel, Sanyo, Sony Ericsson, Pantech, Casio, Kyocera, as well as the Zune and the Kindle. These tips attach to the Powerpack with an included USB cable, but to charge your iPhone or iPod, then you will need to use the included USB cable with your Apple product.

If you are one of those who needs a little bit of juice, then this product is for you. I will have to say that it took me a while to charge it for the first time, but I expect this to happen the first time I used this product. The instructions did not say how long it would take to charge for the first time, though.

Anyway, the PowerPak can be purchased on the Technocel website for about $49.99.

Iron Man ARC Light

Posted: 25 Feb 2010 03:28 PM PST

Okay, let’s say that you are a big Hollywood studio, and you plan to release a big budget moneymaker like Iron Man 2 this summer.

I’m sure that film will make a whole slew of money no matter how good it is, but with merchandise, you can make even more money.

For example, you could create a ARC Light replica that was worn by Tony Stark in the first one, and no doubt the second one. He’ll probably wear it in the third one as well.

You can now buy this particular ARC Light, presumably for your kids. I mean, I’m not certain why any adult would want to wear this, unless it is Halloween or something. You’d have to make a pretty decent Iron Man armor to match this.

By the way, you have not seen the ending of Iron Man merchandise. There is a version of Operation (the Wacky Doctor game) based on Iron Man, which is no doubt based on that one scene from the first film where Pepper Potts changes Tony Stark’s Arc Light reactor. There is even a Mr. Potato head Iron Man, believe it or not.

You should be able to pre-order this thing from Entertainment Earth for about $7.59.

Wiimote proton pack ain’t afraid of no ghost

Posted: 25 Feb 2010 03:03 PM PST

If there is one franchise that shouldn’t be overdone, it is Ghostbusters. I mean, it had one glorious film in 1984 that is still funny, though the special effects look fake. It is a shame that the Ghostbusters II wasn’t the beginning of a whole slew of good Ghostbusters films, or at least a tacked-on trilogy.

There is currently a Ghostbusters game that is available on all consoles, and one fan has created a controller for the Wii platform with this.

According to my source, the “cyclotron” features the four blue LEDs that let’s you know the player selected. There is also a Blue Power cell to let you know how much the power pack has. You can’t see it in this photo, but the blaster is designed to house the Wiimote and Nunchuck in place.

The proton pack was clearly modeled over the ones that Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, and the other guy wore from the original films, and it gets points for detail, even though the color is wrong. The creator clearly designed his proton pack to match the sterile white of the Nintendo Wii and not the black proton pack from the films.

Yes, this is a DIY creation, but the creator needs to find someone to market this. I’ve been hearing for a long time that Ghostbusters III has been in the works. Perhaps this particular toy could work with the video game from the film.

GE Outdoor Motion Activated Adapter

Posted: 25 Feb 2010 01:32 PM PST

Although it’s nice to have a light that will automatically kick on instead of you having to feel for a switch, no one really wants to mess with wiring.  If you’re one of the many that doesn’t actually want to install a whole new light, there’s this GE adapter that just attaches to your existing light.  You could use it anywhere for anything from a convenient light while you’re trying to unlock your front door to relying on it as a security light.

The motion detector will sense your movement and then stay on for only 1 minute or even 10 minutes.  It can detect movement from up to 50 feet away at angles up to 100A.  It has an automatic activation switch for day and night operation.  In order to keep it powered the motion sensor requires a 9V battery.  You can purchase it for $23.56 through Amazon.

The Lightsaber USB Drive

Posted: 25 Feb 2010 12:35 PM PST

If you’re looking for something a little more awesome to store your small files on, thankfully Think Geek is always there to rescue you.  Instead of going after some gray USB drive, get something that’s modeled after one of the most famous fictional weapons.  Sure, it won’t be full sized and it won’t hurt anyone, much less kill them.  It will at the very least make sure to keep your data safe though.

This tiny lightsaber will only hold 1GB of your documents, so you’ll have to be selective about what goes on the drive.  To use them you just plug them into the USB port like every other drive out there.  Once you do plug it in, the lightsaber will begin to glow.  This is another gadget that Think Geek has managed to get imported from Japan.  You can purchase it for $19.99.

Pentax W90 Rugged Waterproof Digital Camera

Posted: 25 Feb 2010 11:46 AM PST

Not everywhere that you take pictures is the safest environment out there.  Especially for those of you that enjoy hiking or the even more dangerous, rock climbing.  With either task you run the risk of dropping the camera in water or mud.  Then there’s that whole accidentally dropping it off of a cliff.  Still, having a camera in those conditions can get you some really cool pictures.  Thankfully some gadgets were created to be able to handle anything we can.  This Pentax is one of them, it may not like being dropped off of a cliff, but it could handle all of the water and mud that you dish out.

The camera is shockproof up to 4ft, which isn’t much.  It does mean that it won’t be horribly harmful to it if it falls out of your pocket though.  The best part is that it’s waterproof up to 20 feet under water.  One of the other big perks is that it has a ring of LED lights around the lens to help with low light types of situations while you’re taking photos or capturing a little video.  Beyond that it has 12.1MP, 5x zoom, 720p movie recording, and HDMI port, 16:9 LCD and image stabilization.  For those of you that enjoy close up shots of tiny things, it also has a digital microscope mode that allows for it to focus on items as close as 1cm from the lens.  Each one of these will cost you $330.  Which is a lot of cash, but it’s a pretty common price for a rugged waterproof camera.
