Babyloid is just plain creepy

Posted: 03 Mar 2011 05:00 AM PST

There are a few things that you need to know about Japan – it has been in recession for the longest time, banks don’t pay interest, it has been the 2nd largest economy in the world for eons before China took over that mantle, and “boasts” of the world's oldest society since 20% of the population is at least 65 years old. Well, apart from that, how about something more cheerful, like it is the top robot nation in the world?

The Babyloid is a new type of welfare robots which was designed to look like that of an infant, tipping the scales at 2.2kg while measuring 44cm in length. Nice to know it doesn’t poop and you need not change diapers on this little fellow, but it does come with a movable mouth, arms and eyelids for an added touch of reality. This robot can also simulate certain human emotions such as crying in order to trigger an emotional responses in users. Prototypes are currently being built for use in trials at nursing homes, so they are still some ways off from a commercial release.

Teach kids about shock weaponry with the Toy Tazer

Posted: 02 Mar 2011 05:32 PM PST

When I heard about this toy tazer device, I couldn’t help but think of the scene in The Hangover when the three best friends had to be shot with Tasers as part of some educational assembly for children. As I recall, some of the kids shot these grown men.

I remember thinking that the scene was completely unrealistic, and that is no way to teach kids about shock weaponry. Fortunately, this electric tazer ought to teach them a thing or two. You know why? Because this thing actually works.

According to my Source, it will give a “little spritz of electricity”. I’m guessing that can’t be too much or this would not be a Toy Tazer. After all, I can’t think of any cap gun that is compatible with real bullets.

I realize that there are some parents out there that won’t buy their kids toy guns. I can understand that, as it could easily teach a kid that a gun could be a toy. However, if you’re going to get your kid a toy gun, why not get one that can only do shocking damage if it was a real gun?

My Source gives what I believe an unbelieveable price of $3.40 for this. Man, I can’t think of the last electronic toy that I bought for that price.

Fly like an eagle with this Emotiv headset and setup

Posted: 02 Mar 2011 05:19 PM PST

In case you thought the iPad 2 was the most exciting thing of the day, you should know that you can now fly using nothing but the power of the mind.

Before you get any Peter Pan fantasies going on, you should know that this is in the experimental stage from the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Their virtual reality device allows users to hang by a harness, but this year, the mind as well as the body is involved.

Project leader Yehuda Duenyas added an Emotiv headset to the mix. For those of you not familiar with Emotiv, it is essentially a headset that can somehow read the brain impulses of your mind. It is the same technology used in BrainDriver.

This would probably be the Brainflyer. You can see in the video below how it works. The person somehow thinks about flying, and the machine takes them in this direction. You can check my Source for more flying videos, and the results are pretty impressive.

I’m guessing that one day this set-up will be made with a room full of screens that will make it appear that you are soaring along city blocks like Superman. I would definitely like to try that out. However, will they perfect this virtual flying technology first, or actual lightweight jetpacks for real flying? Only time will tell.
