Spacecraft 3D – Up Close, and Personal with NASA

Posted: 12 Jul 2012 02:35 PM PDT

Here at Coolest-Gadgets.com we have already told you about the availability of civilian space travel, now I’m not naming any names, but some of us are simply a little too nervous to just whip into space, no matter how comfy the ride may be. Thats not to say I’m not curious…

Well, let me introduce you to Spacecraft 3D, a NASA-created application that brings some of the agency’s amazing robotic spacecraft to life. The app uses animation to show how spacecraft can maneuver and manipulate their outside components and it’s able to put high definition, three-dimensional models right into the hands of kids of all ages. And it has augmented reality capabilities to boot.

Spacecraft 3D uses the iPhone or iPad camera to overlay information on the device’s main screen. The app instructs users to print an augmented reality target on a standard sheet of copy paper. When the device’s camera is pointed at the target, the spacecraft chosen by the user materializes on screen.

Spacecraft 3D also has a feature where you can take your own augmented-reality picture of the Rover or GRAIL spacecraft. You can even take a self-portrait with a spacecraft, putting yourself, or someone else in the picture.

Spacecraft 3D is currently only available at iTunes for your iDevice, but it should be available on other formats in the near future and best of all, its free.

Posted: 12 Jul 2012 01:52 PM PDT

How many options do you really have when you’re dead? I know its a bit of a strange question, but it’s one you might want to ask yourself. Are you leaning towards a black lacquer perma-seal casket with brass handles and accents? Does anyone actually choose their casket? I mean, it seems to me you’re going to be spending a lot of time in it, maybe you should have a hand in picking it out.

Don’t worry, just check out Casket Furniture, a Canadian company hell bent on offering you a more personalized experience than your average mass produced box. Imagine choosing from a unique bed, bookshelf, entertainment center, coffee table or even a pool table, that you can use and enjoy now, and then transform it into your final resting place you know… when the time comes.

Can a household furnishing get any more useful than this? This unique furniture is built to last a lifetime… Well a little more than a lifetime actually. This beautiful coffin becomes part of your life, and then you get to use it again, when youre dead. Using a Furniture Casket will likely take the burden off your loved ones, both emotionally, and financially when you simply pick out a casket that you can use and enjoy right now, saving the expense of them buying one for you, later!

Okay, I know this is a bit of a stretch, and that your family will likely have some sort of an emotional reaction when you ask them to use a drink coaster on your coffin coffee table, but who cares? It’s your funeral! Check out more delightful designs at casketfurniture.com

Crank the grill up, your hands are now safe. The Heat Shield Barbecue Tools are exactly what every grill king or queen needs to manipulate the meat with confidence. Grill flare ups are inevitable, so let the stainless steel guard – which always faces the grill – take the heat. The set includes a fork, spatula and tongs that each extend and lock anywhere from 18 ¼" to 24" to suit your surface. The handles are ergonomic, hard-plastic grips. And the spatula has a probe thermometer tucked in the shaft to verify your grilling progress.

P&P Office Waste Processor – Scrap Paper in, Pencils out

Posted: 12 Jul 2012 10:22 AM PDT

My kid is constantly raiding my printer for paper. I probably wouldn’t mind as much as I do, if it weren’t for the fact that said paper keeps winding up with a bunch of useless scribbles on it all over my desk top, and then to make matters worse, when I go to print something… well you know how it goes.

It’s certainly not just my lovely child, there is enough waste paper to be had in every home, office and school on our planet, but what should we do with it? Well, industrial designers Chengzhu Ruan, Yuanyuan Liu, Xinwei Yuan and Chao Chen have an idea, how about recycling our waste paper into useful pencils? Seems like a good idea and the team has produced a concept machine that does exactly that.

The P&P Office Waste Processor allows users to simply feed a sheet of no-longer-necesary paper into the appropriate slot in the machine, which then tightly wraps it around a pencil lead and voila, the Office waste processor generates an artistic, usable pencil. You go from garbage to pencil in no time flat, and a small forest can heave a collective sigh of relief. No word yet on whether or not this concept will eventually become a reality, but if they will offer different colored leads, for making colored pencils I’m all in.

Virgin Galactic – Commercial Spaceline, Big Dollars and no Peanuts.

Posted: 12 Jul 2012 10:18 AM PDT

I often sit out on my patio gazing at the moon and stars and wonder just what kinds of secrets the Universe may hold. So many little kids dream of being astronauts, I guess I might have too… but I have a myriad of control and claustrophobia issues, probably best left for my “psychiatrist in a box” post thats coming up tomorrow. In the meantime, check out spaceflight opportunities for the rest of you.

Virgin Galactic Founder Sir Richard Branson revealed at the 2012 International Airshow in Farnborough that the company has now actually accepted deposits for the suborbital flights from around 529 brave men and women, all ready to become first time astronauts. All this as a life-sized replica of the flying machine SpaceShipTwo was unveiled at the show. This news comes following the recent testing that confirms all major components of SpaceShipTwo’s rocket system’s have been qualified for powered flight, leaving the craft on track to actually “lift off” before the end of the year.

SpaceShipTwo actually takes flight from the back of Virgin Galactic’s proven WhiteKnightTwo,  getting her aloft and ready to begin her suborbital missions. Thanks to the extreme flexibility of such an air launch, Virgin Galactic’s customers will enjoy reduced infrastructure costs in addition to the wide range of possible launch locations tailored to individual mission requirements and weather conditions.

So if being pinned back in your seat as your brains and cheeks shift to the back of your head, while howling rocket motors propel you to 50 thousand feet into the air at about 3000 miles an hour (which is almost 4 times the speed of sound) into the weightless world of space sounds super appealing, Virgin Galactic has  got a ticket they’d like to sell you, and at only 200 thousand dollars a pop, I’d make my reservations now! Hey, if I’m traveling at 4 times the speed of sound, will I be back on Earth before anyone can hear me screaming?

To book your seats please make your reservation with a Virgin Galacitic Space Agent, or visit virgingalactic.com.
