PlayStation Move Racing Wheel targets racing fans

Posted: 05 Jun 2012 06:30 AM PDT

Do you love living life on the fast lane? If you have answered in the affirmative and are not working just yet, chances are you have an affinity for video games that feature fast cars, such as Gran Turismo and Need for Speed – after all, playing those titles are more or less the next best thing when it comes to enjoying super exotic vehicles, considering how it is nearly impossible to own one by working for people. Well, the classic video game controller for any console, including the Sony PS3, was not geared for racing games, which is why the PlayStation Move Racing Wheel was announced at Sony’s E3 press conference today.

The PlayStation Move Racing Wheel is a spanking new peripheral for racing game fans who own a PS3, where it will transform your PlayStation Move motion controller into the ultimate racing experience, capable of supporting just about any vehicle that you have chosen to drive. Some of the highlighted features include precise motion tracking for responsive handling of your vehicle, an innovative folding grip design will allow you to switch between racing a sports bike to a high-octane supercar, the ability to feel the intense vibration feedback of your vehicle as you try to muscle your way through a pack of no-quarter-given opponents behind the wheel, while experiencing realistic gameplay action thanks to the inclusion of race car paddle shifters and motorcycle twist throttle controls.

I do wonder what other racing game peripheral manufacturers like Logitech thinks about this. The PlayStation Move Racing Wheel does not resemble an actual steering wheel at all, as it is more geared towards an aircraft of sorts, or perhaps the Formula 1 wheel, but any normal car on the road will not feature a “wheel” like the shape it comes in.

Ah well, if you cannot wait to get your hands on the PlayStation Move Racing Wheel, be pleased to know that it will arrive later this fall for a relatively affordable $39.99, and it will also support upcoming racing titles such as Little Big Planet Karting. Fret not about backwards compatibility, as it will play nice with PS3 racing favorites such as Gran Turismo 5, Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit, BurnOut Paradise, and MotorStorm Apocalypse, amongst others.

Do bear in mind that the PS Move is not included with each purchase, so you have got to own it first before picking up the PlayStation Move Racing Wheel!

Wonderbook: Book of Spells offers augmented reality reading

Posted: 05 Jun 2012 06:00 AM PDT

I clearly remember back in the days when I was a wee lad, there was no such thing as video game consoles. All right, there was the Atari 2600, but how many people in my neighborhood could actually scurry up the money to buy one? There were bigger things to worry about such as putting food on the table, and the number of TV channels available for viewing could be counted on just one hand (in black and white as well, not many people had the dough to purchase a color TV).

What other forms of entertainment were there for kids like me? Plenty – the great outdoors proved to be a constantly evolving and changing playground, and all it took was some imagination to get us kids running around, screaming like crazy. When we are indoors because it is raining outside, we could always draw something or read a book, an activity that will do its bit to ensure that our minds are actively engaged, instead of being passively spoonfed like this generation. Books were veritable tomes of information, but kids of tomorrow have something else to look forward to – augmented reality reading, with Sony pursuing this front thanks to their Wonderbook: Book of Spells.

The Wonderbook: Book of Spells is written by one of the current generation’s most popular authors – the maiden behind the Harry Potter series, J.K. Rowling. Developed by London Studio, this is one book that hails from the Harry Potter universe, where it functions as an enchanted textbook that was written over 200 years ago by Miranda Goshawk. Once you open the book, you will be sent over to the Hogwarts library, and each chapter lets you read about and practice around 20 spells. As you learn, you also pick up valuable experiences and lessons, in addition to house points, all part and parcel of being a Hogwarts student.

J.K. Rowling described the Wonderbook: Book of Spells as, "Wonderbook: Book of Spells is the closest a Muggle can come to a real spellbook. I've loved working with Sony's creative team to bring my spells, and some of the history behind them, to life. This is an extraordinary device that offers a reading experience like no other."

Do expect more augmented reality books from Sony later this year. This particular title will utilize your PS Move accessory as a magic wand. Sad to have such a fat wand, ain’t it?

Helicopter goes upside down to keep you cool

Posted: 05 Jun 2012 05:30 AM PDT

Helicopter blades that spin like crazy are definitely not something you would want to deal with, especially when it comes flying in your direction alongside all sorts of different debris after a particularly bad crash. Not so with what Raffaele Iannello has done with this 1:6 scale of the legendary Hughes/MD 500 helicopter, debuting not as a combatant on the battlefield, but rather, as a piece of home appliance that will definitely turn heads at the 2012 Milan Design Week.

After all, this scaled down version of the helicopter is also turned upside down and remains permanently stuck on your ceiling, simply because it is supposed to function as a fan to keep you cool, instead of ferrying people from point A to point B while skipping the nasty traffic crawls that we tend to experience these days in gridlocked cities. The propellers have transformed it into an exclusive fan with four blades, where it will come in a shiny black color alongside a standard three speed motor that is activated by the included remote.

There are timepieces which are laden with jewels and such, but if you do not happen to have the kind of deep pockets that warrant such luxurious purchases, then perhaps something more down to earth is in line for the average Joe? Enter the $199.99 Void Watch Retro Gauge Stainless – while it is not exactly the cheapest timepiece available on the market, you know for sure that this is one timepiece that will turn heads whenever you slap it on your wrist. Why do I say so? For starters, speed demons will definitely fall in love with it, as it boasts of a slick interpretation of the classic speedometer.

The analog display will feature Quartz Japan movement for that added touch of accuracy, and it is made out of 316 stainless steel and will be finished in brushed chrome. Showing only half of a traditional circular face, it boasts of a pair of double-ended, compass needle style hands that will tell you of the current time. Each hand will come with one red tip, while the other tip is obviously white. The colored tip will correspond to the digit with the matching color on the dial. Gentlemen, start your engines!
