Apartment in New York City decorated in steampunk fashion

Posted: 19 Aug 2011 11:50 AM PDT

Jeremy Noritz decided one day that he was sick of a boring apartment, and transformed it with a serious steampunk theme.

Ah, steampunk. Is there nothing better than that never-seen bygone era where everything was a mix of the Industrial Revolution with a Victorian look? For example, the front door is taken from a submarine, and it has a porthole that is quite a surprise for pizza delivery guys.

Anything that looks mechanical or gear-shaped has been used for decor, and zeppelins are also featured prominently. For example, there is a color changing zeppelin that floats on the ceiling, and a bedroom designed to look like an exploded zeppelin.

Also in the bedroom is a Murphy bed that is operated by a deactivated bomb that can life and lower the bed. The floor is sepia colored concrete, inspired by the patina of a Rodin sculpture.

The owner is selling this home for about 1.75 million dollars, and I suppose if you liked Pee-Wee’s Playhouse, this would be the steam-powered version of it. This is not meant to be a slam on this creative apartment, as I would not mind living here. However, this looks like a Trading Spaces episode gone completely wrong, and I don’t want to see the reaction of the people who hate this design.

iSurge from Energizer

Posted: 19 Aug 2011 11:27 AM PDT

Energizer has been giving its customers a lot of power for years, and they are now giving even more with the iSurge.

The iSurge is one of those “it does all devices”, and it plugs into the wall and is an excellent place to lay an iPod or iPhone with a 30 pin dock. In addition to this, it has 3 standard surge protected AC outlets for charging anything that you can plug in.

It also has two USB ports with 2.1 Amp output for your iPad or anything else that is USB chargeable, which is just about every device these days. Oh, by the way, there is a night light, and there is even a rotating plug so it should fit in any oddly-place outlet.

In short, the iSurge is designed for the modern-day consumer of electronic devices, as it can accommodate quite a few at once. Considering that I have a phone, camera, laptop, and other assortment of gadgets, I could use an iSurge.

The funny part is that I don’t consider myself a gadget connoisseur, so I predict that there are a lot of consumers who could really use an iSurge even more than I do. Maybe Apple should put their official brand on it, since the name already has their small “i” in front of it.

If you want the iSurge, then you will have to wait until October, and lay down $60.

Hologram alerts passengers at Paris’ Orly Airport

Posted: 19 Aug 2011 10:09 AM PDT

Some of you might remember the holograms that we covered at Luton Airport of London. It would appear that Paris’ Orly airport has holograms as well.

Like Luton, these holograms at Orly are rear-projected on human-shaped plexiglass. Unlike the ones at Luton, these holograms are not stationed at the security, but designed to alert passengers where and when to board their flight.

Yes, they are not a holographic as the cool ones that we see in Star Wars, but they will do. Orly installed them along with their additional seating and room for 400 waiting passengers. You can watch a video of it after the jump.

As you can see, it stops passengers in their tracks. I will have to admit that I would want to touch this, and that is what a lot of kids are doing when they pass these Plexiglass holograms. I would want to see if I can pass my hand in front of the projector.

I don’t know about you, but science-fiction has taught me that a world where holograms have replaced signs is a cue that you’re living in a dystopia. If you don’t believe me, watch the opening credits of Hardwired, a science fiction movie now available for free on Crackle. There is something about a hologram telling us what to do that makes me feel that I am living in a society that is completely dumbed-down and sterile.

NZXT Tempest 410 and Tempest 410 Elite chassis for PC enthusiasts

Posted: 19 Aug 2011 06:00 AM PDT

If you love building your computer from scratch, then chances are you will pay close attention to the kind of chassis that your system will be built upon. Will it be large enough to be able to house all the components that you want to stash inside? How about the design – does it go with the flow of your room? Are there adequate fans, or will it be a liquid cooled system? So many questions, and the answers lie right in front of you as you peruse through the many PC case manufacturers’ webpages all night long.

Well, NZXT is certainly an old hand at this, where they have just expanded their Tempest series with a couple more models for you to begin your new project with zest. First of all, let us take a look at the Tempest 410, where it is said to be able to deliver the kind of aggressive airflow that is so often required to meet the most demanding enthusiast's overclocking needs. The innards of the computer will remain nice and cool with dual touch powered 120mm front fans that sport removable filters. These touch powered fan compartments are wireless, so it goes without saying that you will save plenty of time whenever you want to remove these fans. More about it in the extended post.

To make sure that the mercury remains low within as well, it will feature an extra-large honeycomb mesh design inside, coupled with dual radiator support for an all-in-one liquid cooling solution. As for the Tempest 410 Elite version, naturally the suffix “Elite” adds more value (and hence, price) to the final model, where you will be able to enjoy additional innovative features such as an acrylic side panel so that not only you, but others will be able to view the insides – time to light it up all the way then!

Just how much are you expected to pay for these new chassis? Well, the Tempest 410 and Tempest 410 Elite will retail for $79.99 and 89.99, respectively – highly affordable in any case – pun not intended.

Hyper Flying Duck

Posted: 19 Aug 2011 05:30 AM PDT

Own a dog who loves playing nothing but fetch? A game of tug, going swimming, or performing basic obedience commands don’t quite cut the mustard for ol’ Fido – and nothing gets him going like a game of fetch. To make things more challenging for you as the owner, he can be at it for hours on end literally, but look on the bright side – at least you get to practice your throwing arm, right?

How about a little help from the £8.99 Hyper Flying Duck? Yes sir, this unique device will be able to launch the Hyper Flying Duck at a range of up to 100 feet, where the only kind of effort you would need to expend would be using your thumb to flip the trigger. To make sure the Hyperduck takes a decent flight, hook your thumb under the beak and pull back the tail rope with your other hand. Aim and release accordingly, and see Fido fly after it with gusto!

Good thing the Hyperduck is made out of tough suede and woven material so that it won’t get worn out too fast – but will instead clean and strengthen your dog's teeth as you play. Neat, no?

Are you a suit and tie kind of guy? If you have answered in the affirmative, then rest assured that you should own a collection of ties that will surely turn any departmental store’s tie section to shame. How else are you going to organize the lot of your ties then? Here is an interesting idea – the $52 Motorized Tie Rack. The name itself suggests that this particular revolving tie rack will help organize your life, holding up to 64 ties at once, not to mention the ability to stash away an impressive number of belts to boot, without taking up too much space in your bedroom.

The rack will remain in place, keeping all your ties safe and secure, until you decide to go through your ever growing collection with but a single push of a button. Since it is battery-operated, it will still be able to function even when the main grid experiences a brownout. Heck, there is even a built-in light so that you can see just what kind of gaudy color combination you’re going to wear that particular Monday morning. Good thing the motor gets some rest during the weekends, no?
