NEATGEAR’s Genie app – Printing, No Strings Attached

Posted: 07 May 2012 02:12 PM PDT

I use my iPad a lot. I do find that not being able to print from it easily is a bit of a pain. Same thing with my Macbook, I keep finding myself unplugging the printer from my desktop and plugging it into my laptop.. again, just not as convenient as I would like. I wondered to myself, should I just invest in one of those AirPrint printers… but my printer is still perfectly fine. What’s a girl to do?

Well, lucky for us, NETGEAR just announced the release of their new Genie App upgrade that enables printing from an Apple, iPhone, iPad and iPod touch to any networked or USB printer. With this nifty NETGEAR Genie App upgrade, iOS device users are no longer restricted to AirPrint-compatible printers. The NETGEAR Genie App upgrade dramatically overcomes previous AirPrint compatibility limitations to give users the freedom to print to any USB or networked printer. Yipee!

The NETGEAR Genie, is available for PCs and MACs and provides what they like to call a “home network dashboard” that enables folks to monitor, connect, and control their home networks and also to diagnose and automatically fix network connectivity issues.

With this awesome upgrade the NETGEAR Genie App also renders any printer AirPrint-compatible, whether connected wirelessly to the home network, USB-connected to a PC, or connected through a USB port to a NETGEAR ReadySHARE print-capable router. While a PC or a Mac is on, the NETGEAR Genie App enables printing from iPad, iPhone and iPod touch devices on the same network.

The Windows OS and Mac OS NETGEAR Genie App upgrade is now available for download for free at netgear.com  NETGEAR Genie is also available to download for iPad, iPhone, Android Smartphones and tablets from the Apple store.

BikeGuard – QR Codes for Bike Recovery, will it work?

Posted: 07 May 2012 01:41 PM PDT

I have a relatively inexpensive bicycle, my husband wants us to spend more money and get some really fancy ones. I think he forgets about my less is more theory on exercise. I just don’t think having a deluxe bike is going to change how I feel about getting out in the elements and working up a sweat, and anyway, when you have a nice bike, someone will just want to take it… well, there goes that excuse.

MyAssetTag.com, is introducing us to BikeGuard, a new (and free) bike registry and identification program. This service provides its customers with free QR Code asset tags so folks can track and identify their bicycles, and since a bike is lost or stolen about every seven seconds, BikeGuard may just be part of reducing the challenge of locating and recovering bicycles for both the bike owners, and the police.

Registering your bike with BikeGuard should greatly increase the likelihood that it will be returned to you if it is somehow recovered. Obviously registered bikes have a much greater chance of being returned to owners when lost or stolen, and these registries are used as an aid by police stations in order to identify and return stolen bicycles. Often times recovered bicycles are never returned to their owners and are auctioned, stockpiled or destroyed. BikeGuard aims to change that.

Registering is easy enough, users simply create a free account at www.myassettag.com and enter the details about their bikes like the make, model, and they can even upload a photo. That creates a personal bicycle registration page that displays the owner’s contact information and all the details of the registered bike.

Lastly, you get up to three free BikeGuard asset tags that contain a quick response (QR) code that when scanned with any smartphone, will direct the user to the owner’s bike registration page. Voila! Now you just have to hope that whoever found your bike wants to do the right thing.. easier said than done. No?

BioMetal Fiber Walking Robot Inchworm

Posted: 07 May 2012 06:30 AM PDT

When it comes to the world of robotics, I am quite sure that deep down inside, many of us would like nothing better than a robotic assistant to help us around the home. Tony Stark has JARVIS, who has proved to be more than helpful in getting him out of a tight spot, and Data of Star Trek has certainly proven to be an invaluable ally in helping the crew of the Enterprise out. Well, since the majority of us cannot afford extremely expensive robots and androids, we will have to make do with more modest offerings like the $29.99 BioMetal Fiber Walking Robot Inchworm.

Talk about seeing some BioMetal muscle in action, where the BioMetal Fiber will enable this particular digital inchworm walk – one step at a time, just like a baby. The BioMetal Fiber will contract whenever electric current is added, making it function in the same way as that of a robot muscle fiber. Who wants to bet against such technology being expounded and used in the future for a real Terminator or to usher in a future robotic apocalypse?

Plug Out Plug Organizers

Posted: 07 May 2012 06:00 AM PDT

Do you agree that at times, wires and cables seem to have a mind of their own? Well, I certainly feel that we humans ought not to lose the fight against such minor stuff like wayward cables, and look towards ways to “combat” it with items like the $7.49 Plug Out Plug Organizers. It will definitely make your whole life more organized, at least from the stay-at-home aspect, as the adhesive, silicone strips will ensure that your plugs remain near the outlet for a greater degree of convenience, while doing away with the amount of wasted electricity due to the phenomenon known as “vampire draw”. Not only that, there is no longer the need for a power strip.

Should you not make use of an electrical item at the moment, just unplug it and you can sleep easy, knowing that you are already doing your small bit to save energy and be kind to the planet. These strips used in the Plug Out Plug Organizers will be made out of a stain-free adhesive, ensuring that no ugly marks will remain on your wall.

When incorporated alongside ultra-linear neodymium magnets and precision damping, it paves the way for a smoother motion and a more accurate, natural sound. The ear pad fabric has also been specially designed for P3 in order to improve the sound quality, and is also extremely comfortable, letting you listen for hours on end without your ears feeling “hot” unlike other far cheaper headphones.

Each purchase of the P3 will also feature the aforementioned hard carry case and a choice of cables: one with a remote/microphone attachment that works seamlessly with your iPhone®; and another that ensures compatibility with all other mobile phones and MP3 players. The asking price for the Bowers & Wilkins P3 headphones as it arrives in the market later this June in black or white shades? A “mere” $199.99.

ROAM MobileOS controller

Posted: 07 May 2012 05:00 AM PDT

When it comes to the world of portable gaming before the iPhone as well as slew of Android-powered smartphones actually made their mark in the market, we were just left with two credible choices – the Nintendo DS (oh how I loved this console, and had many more hours of fun compared to the PSP!) and the Sony PSP, where the latter seemed to cater to more mature gamers, although there were plenty of breathtaking classic titles on the Nintendo DS to while away your time as well.

However, the arrival of full touchscreen phones on the scene changed the way things worked – no longer does the ergonomics of a D-Pad matter all that much. No sir, it was all tap and touches here and there, and it proved to be a rather casual gaming experience, making the Nintendo DS seem extremely’ deep in comparison. Well, over time, there has been grouses about a full touchscreen control scheme for certain more “traditional” titles such as platformers, where physical buttons would always be more than welcome. Enter the ROAM MobileOS controller which you can read more about it after the jump.

After all, the mobile gaming scene has certainly changed a whole lot, with the iOS and Android platforms said to surpass the Nintendo DS and Sony PSP back in 2011 with 58% of the market, at least according to Flurry Analytics. This means a peripheral like the ROAM MobileOS controller would definitely come in handy, where it measures a diminutive 120mm x 16mm x 52mm, and has been tastefully as well as ergonomically designed, boasting a slew of features that are normally found on full size game controllers.

The ROAM MobileOS controller will play nice with both iOS and Android devices, sporting a quartet of play modes in the process – iOS mode, keyboard mode, mouse mode and game pad mode. Game pad mode will be the only mode where you are able to take advantage of the dual analog sticks, while Google’s open API in Android 3.0 and higher can deliver console quality control to your mobile gaming experience. The ROAM itself has a 30 foot range, and its rechargeable battery is said to deliver up to 10 hours of gaming goodness at a stretch.
