Wise Hammer finds and marks studs Posted: 28 Jul 2010 02:30 PM PDT I’ve heard of different gadgets that help the DIY challenged find studs in the wall, but this hammer actually has a built-in stud finder that’ll help you to hang up heavy items without causing too much distress to your walls. With the stud sensor you’ll be able to find the stud and then it even has a way to help you mark exactly where you found it. That’ll keep you from worrying about forgetting the exact location. The Wise Hammer has a little light towards the end of the handle, when it flashes green you’ve found a stud. Then you use the marking nub to mark the wall in the exact location of the stud. After that, all you have left to do is use the hammer to pound in any necessary nails. You can purchase the whole thing through the Wise Hammer website for $29.99. Black & Decker Energy Efficient Vacuum Cleaner Posted: 28 Jul 2010 02:30 PM PDT There was a time when I really thought these little handheld vacuums were close to pointless. Oddly it’s only after having a house with wood floors in almost every room that I wish I had something like this. It’d just be nice to have around to suck up quick little messes left by my nieces or any dead spiders that seem to have come into my house to run away from the summer heat only to discover themselves feeling very flat. Black & Decker has created an affordable option that would do the trick for all those small jobs from cookie crumbs to the bugs they attract. This energy efficient vacuum has received an Energy Star rating. It is cordless with 2-speeds and a 10-position pivoting nozzle. It has 3-stage filtration, an upholstery brush, a small crevice tool and a wall mountable charging base to finish off the package. You can purchase it along with a handy little 2-year warranty for $50 through Amazon, where it has received almost a 5-star rating from 317 customers. Tape Measure with built-in calculator Posted: 28 Jul 2010 01:31 PM PDT When you’re measuring several items at a time, sometimes it’s hard to remember all of the necessary numbers. If you tend to forget that information often, you might want to consider buying a tape measure that can actually help you remember those numbers. This one has a handy little notepad right inside of the tape measure for you to write down all of your important information. Plus, if you need to do some math for a large project, it has a calculator too. The calculator and the notepad stay hidden within. That’ll make it so that you don’t get the calculator and notepad quite so filled with sawdust while you’re messing with any woodworking. Sure, the whole design isn’t the most expensive out there, but it would do the trick. The tape measure itself can measure up to 10 feet long. The calculator comes with the required batteries and the tape measure with that very necessary belt clip. You can pick up the whole thing for $12.98. Apple has new Mac Pro line to rock your world Posted: 28 Jul 2010 10:15 AM PDT
Needless to say, the new Mac Pro is the most powerful and configurable Mac to date, where its next generation quad-core and 6-core Intel Xeon processors run at speeds up to 3.33GHz. These multi-core processors rely on a single die design, enabling each core to share up to 12MB L3 cache in order to further improve efficiency while increasing processing speed. Turbo Boost will dynamically boost processor speeds up to 3.6GHz, while Hyper-Threading technology can create up to two dozen virtual cores. Each Mac Pro will now ship with the ATI Radeon HD 5770 graphics processor that is equipped with 1GB of memory, and you can also choose to fork out more dough for the faster 1GB ATI Radeon HD 5870. Each Mac Pro purchase will be accompanied by Apple’s innovative Magic Mouse, and you can also opt to drop more dollars for Apple’s new Magic Trackpad if that is your cup of tea. Of course, we don’t expect you to use the Mac Pro for simple tasks such as web surfing and doing spreadsheets while typing out documents, but we don’t suppose it is wrong either to spend your money that way if you’re so inclined. Expect the new Mac Pro to hit the market this coming August with prices starting from $2,499.99 upwards. Coolest Gadgets UK – For all your UK centric tech and gadget news. Apple has new 27-inch LED Cinema Display, out go the old ones Posted: 28 Jul 2010 09:58 AM PDT
Priced at a cool $999, this is definitely not a model for those who are on a limited budget. After all, at that price point, you can already purchase a working, entry level desktop machine which runs on Windows, but it is quality that you’re getting here. Boasting a beautiful 16:9 edge-to-edge glass display alongside an aluminum stand, you will also get an adjustable hinge which makes tilting the display almost effortless. The LED Cinema Display will also deliver vivid colors and exceptionally high contrast, thanks to the implementation of a premium display technology known as in-plane switching (IPS) that offers a brilliant image across an ultra wide 178 degree viewing angle. It is nice to know that the new LED Cinema Display sports a new ambient light sensor which will automatically adjust the display brightness based on external lighting conditions, helping you save power in the process whenever you work in a well lit area. It also has a heart for the environment, thanks to its construction using mercury-free LED technology, arsenic-free glass and highly recyclable materials. Just make sure your Mac has a Mini DisplayPort for it to talk to each other. Samsung offers ST80 digital camera with Wi-Fi capability Posted: 28 Jul 2010 09:44 AM PDT
Some of the smart features available on the ST80 would be the 'Smart Crop', which in essence is a unique editing tool that will not require you to toy around with your captured digital images on a computer. After all, you can do so directly on the camera itself, cropping images taken at any angle or slant, including banners or signs, followed by straightening them out as though you had taken them straight on in the first place. We’re guessing even trained eyes will have a hard time telling the difference. With Samsung's Smart Auto (Still & Movie) scene recognition technology, capturing images become easier than ever, recognizing the user's current shooting environment automatically while choosing the right settings in order to achieve picture perfect moments. Still photos are not the only thing the ST80 is good at, as it also boasts HD video recording for those who are interested. At 30 frames-per-second, the ST80 is more than capable of letting you record high-quality, 720p HD video using the H.264 format, gaining up to thrice the recording capacity compared to the MJPEG video format. With its Wi-Fi connectivity, you can upload or share digital images or videos with others straight from the camera without uploading it via a cable beforehand. Not only that, direct uploading to social networking sites such as Facebook, Picasa, YouTube, Photo Bucket and Samsung's own Web site is also possible. The Samsung ST80 will be out this September for $249.99 a pop. Cool Gift Idea: Digital Picture Frames, check out our reviews. Samsung HMX-E10 is a full HD camcorder for beginners Posted: 28 Jul 2010 09:34 AM PDT Love capturing most of your precious moments in a digital format? While pictures are great at conveying a visual story at that moment in time, videos also have their place in the entire hierarchy. The Samsung HMX-E10 plays its role well, being a full HD camcorder that is small and portable enough to be slipped into your pocket without much problem at all. This is a point-and-shoot device, boasting a versatile, 270-degree swiveling lens which will enhance your creativity while allowing you to record your very own unique views in each video through various angles. With its swiveling lens, you can also have a new sense of fun when recording video, as it allows you to be part of the video itself without straining your arm too much (or making a guesswork at where the lens is pointed at). All recorded video can be transferred over to a computer using the innovative built-in USB port function, which is a similar to what Cisco’s line of Flip camcorders have. It also frees up your luggage space, since there is no USB cable to bring around. When plugged in via USB, you can also charge the battery, killing two birds with one stone. Not only that, the HMX-E10 will come loaded with Samsung's play-edit-sharing program known as intelli-studio, where this intuitive program will offer you the ability to edit and play your video from any computer without having to install supporting software. Perfect when you’re traveling and do not have a personal computer or notebook to fiddle with. With an interactive and onscreen "upload" button, the HMX-E10 makes short work of uploading footage to the Web. It drastically reduces the number of steps needed to successfully upload and share video on various sites such as YouTube. Other hardware specifications include a large, high-performance 1/3.2 inch CMOS sensor which can capture video in full HD resolution as well as 8-megapixel stills, a 2.7″ wide touchscreen LCD display, the mentioned swivel lens, and Smart Filters to produce unique lens and color effects. Available in ivory or black colors, the Samsung HMX-E10 will hit the market this September for $199.99 a pop. Conference Calendar – The global conference and expo finder. FedEX CEO envisions a future of robot planes Posted: 27 Jul 2010 06:07 PM PDT I’m sure that most of you have seen all the Fed Ex airplanes at the “Hub” in the film Cast Away. Yes, they really do need all those planes to get all of our stuff to the proper place, and FedEX CEO Fred Smith sees a better way. His vision is simple: robot planes. Yes, I know, there are many safety concerns with these. What Fred Smith envisions are not these autonomous planes that fly on their own to select locations, but rather an idea where one plane with a real human pilot leads a fleet of robotic planes around the world and makes certain they land properly at their proper destination. In other words, robot planes that fly in V formation like geese, with a human plane in the lead. Yes, this sounds like something like science fiction, but you know that there are several UAV robot drones that work for the military. However, you should also know that UAVs are not supposed to fly over residential areas. Therefore, FedEx is going to have to get a lot of clearance to pull off something like this. In a related story, some researchers at Ohio’s Wright-Patterson Air Force Base want to build some robots that can load and unload planes. I suppose that we’re on our way to completely removing the human from the shipping equation. This might not be a good thing in the longrun. Posted: 27 Jul 2010 05:48 PM PDT Let’s just say I handed you this slingshot with the push button numbers on it. What would you think it was supposed to do? Perhaps it is a new type of cellular phone, where you dial in the number and shoot it at the nearest cell phone tower to get the best possible signal. The truth is that this slingshot is designed to shoot SMS messages. Granted, you need to have a big screen as well as a projector to see the messages, but the end result is kind of neat. There is a video of it after the jump that I highly recommend watching. As you can see, the people are here are entering in their message, and then pulling back on the slingshot to “splatter” it on the giant screen. There is a laser in this thing that will keep track of where you are “aiming”, and then you will have some terrific digital graffiti. This apparently a project by some media group in Berlin, but that is about all my Source has for “why” of this project. Honestly, I would love to see this experiment repeated at Times Square in New York City, but I don’t believe that screen is a projection screen. Maybe something could be worked out.
