Apple MacBook Air gets update

Posted: 20 Jul 2011 09:15 AM PDT

What some deem to be the world’s thinnest notebook (some Apple haters still claim that this is a netbook, although I am inclined to disagree with that assessment even though I am not an Apple fanboy) has just gotten better – and just in case you were wondering how that is possible, why don’t you keep on reading? I’m sure you might even end up looking forward to get hold of the new MacBook Air eventually.

Not only does the updated MacBook Air come with next generation processors, it will also be able to handle high-speed data transmissions thanks to the inclusion of the new Thunderbolt I/O technology, in addition to a backlit keyboard to let you work late into the night without any light in the background, and Mac OS X Lion doing the brunt of the work to keep everything together – software-wise, of course.

Since it runs on “the world's most advanced operating system”, you can be sure that the MacBook Air is no pushover unlike the first generation model. Apple claims that it is able to deliver up to twice the performance of its predecessor, the new MacBook Air will start from $999 upwards, depending on the kind of specifications and hardware that you decide to cram inside.

Just like the previous generation, the new MacBook Air will come in 11″ and 13″ models, and they will retain their extremely thin profile so that you can slip it into a briefcase, purse or bag in a jiffy. Just make sure you don’t throw it out of the house by accident after hiding it in between a stack of old newspapers! Boasting of a durable aluminum unibody enclosure that measures an incredibly thin 0.11″ at its thinnest point, you won’t find any hard drives inside this puppy so that the thin profile can be maintained.

Instead, the MacBook Air relies on flash memory to help it be able to turn on instantly while delivering fast data access, improved reliability and better energy efficiency. If you are feeling flush and want the “best” model, then be prepared to fork out $1,599 for the 1.7 GHz 13″ MacBook Air that has 4GB RAM and 256GB of flash storage – how does that sound to you?

Apple updates Mac mini

Posted: 20 Jul 2011 09:00 AM PDT

The delectable Mac mini from Apple is back again – this time updated with next generation Intel core processors, in addition to the introduction of new discrete graphics, high-speed Thunderbolt I/O technology and Mac OS Lion, the latest version of what Apple calls as “the world's most advanced operating system”. That is certainly a very high billing to live up to, where the new Mac mini rolls out up to double the processor and graphics performance of its predecessor – never mind that the compact and efficient aluminum design are retained.

Just how much do you expect to pay for something this new? How about $599 as the entry price point? That is certainly quite a tempting figure to begin with, and for those living in the US, you can place your orders for the new Mac mini from today onwards – while the physical model can always be picked up from a brick-and-mortar store from tomorrow onwards if you prefer touching your purchase beforehand. To know more about what Apple has put into the new Mac mini, why not give the rest of the story after the jump a go?

Measuring what seems to be an impossibly 7.7″ square and 1.4″ thin, the new Mac mini is capable of coming in the same compact aluminum design while upping the ante in terms of performance and graphics capabilities thanks to some engineering genius. There are three different configurations to choose from, where you can have it run on the latest dual-core Intel Core i5 or Intel Core i7 processors with AMD Radeon HD 6630M discrete graphics, or a quad-core Intel Core i7 powered server configuration.

You won’t find any optical disc drive with this puppy though, but the Mac mini is capable of accessing optical drives on other PCs and Macs. Heck, it will also play nice with the MacBook Air SuperDrive if you so desire. The new Mac mini will max out at 8GB RAM, a 7200 RPM hard drive and a 256GB SSD for the ultimate performance in a small package – this is one dog that has a bite worse than its bark, if you want to find a way to describe it.

Dr Who: Tardis USB 4 Port Hub

Posted: 20 Jul 2011 08:45 AM PDT

USB ports are to geeks just as handbags and shoes are to fashion forward ladies – do you subscribe to that ideology? Well, if you answered in the affirmative, perhaps you might be interested in the £22.99 Dr Who: Tardis USB 4 Port Hub. The name of this peripheral says it all – at that kind of price, you will be able to hold imaginary scenes right in front of you with the Tardis as the meeting point for your characters, while transferring data from a USB flash drive over to the computer (or vice versa). After all, an idle mind is the devil’s workshop, so why not send that noggin’ of yours into overdrive while you curse the slow speed of USB 2.0 compared to USB 3.0?

This 4-port USB hub will replicate the 1950s police phonebox, complete with a flashing lantern on the Tardis roof in addition to time-travelling sound effects, although you won’t be able to turn back the hands of time with this – not even when you Ctrl-Z a dozen times on your keyboard.

Virtual Reality coming to the Sony Playstation?

Posted: 20 Jul 2011 08:00 AM PDT

I didn’t visit Sony’s booth at CES last January, but apparently they had this pair of OLED VR goggles on display.

The Sony 3D virtual reality headset is not a product available for this year, but is actually more of a concept and prototype. The senior director of Sony Worldwide Studios has stated that the company is trying to do some research and development for some immersive VR.

So are we seeing another age of Virtual Boy? Hopefully it will be much better than that, since the technology of tracking has improved with the Kinect, not to mention the Move. Yes, the tracking is here. The screen resolution is also here, not to mention the processing power. What I’m trying to say is that the stars aligning for a very cool advancement in 3D in the near future.

If that is the case, then why hasn’t Sony said anything about it? Perhaps they wanted the Vita to get all the press. Man, if Sony does intend to ever have a VR gaming accessory, it certain is taking its sweet time developing it.

Maybe it will become available when the PS4 becomes available. I wonder if the headset will look like this. Right now, it looks like a cross between Tron and Cyclops’ visor from X-men.

Control an R/C car with an Android phone with the Blue Drone

Posted: 20 Jul 2011 04:12 AM PDT

For those who have ever wanted a Nissan GT-R in miniature form are about to get your wish with the Blue Drone R/C Racer.

Not only is this R/C car a tiny replica of a $90,000, 530 horsepower car, but it has a very unique feature. It can be controlled by a Bluetooth-enabled Android phone or tablet.

Yes, thanks to a free application, you can control this R/C car with the use of a touch screen, or steer it using your mobile’s accelerometer. The car has a range of thirty feet, is powered by three AAA batteries, and can last for about three hours.

This is one of those Kickstarter projects, which means that it hasn’t been made into a reality as yet. The makers are looking for $200,000 to get started, and if you are willing to lay down $59, you can get one for yourself.

You can go to the project page for more information. If you go to the Source link below, you can watch a demo video of it in action.

I wonder if this is the beginning of R/C toys that are controlled by an application rather than a remote control apparatus of some type. We might as well phase out that device, as it seems rather old-school in comparison to a smartphone.

Philips AmbientLED receives ENERGY STAR rating

Posted: 20 Jul 2011 03:35 AM PDT

Generally, I usually do not review light bulbs on this blog. After all, it is a light bulb, a device that has been around since the time of Thomas Alva Edison. It’s hardly the coolest thing out today in our technological society.

However, it would appear that Philips has improved upon the device that changed everything. The AmbientLED can replace a 60 watt incandescent A19 bulb with a light output of 800 lumens, a voltage of 120 volts, and an energy use of just 12.5 watts. That all adds up to a life of about 25,000 hours, which the company somehow calculated to 15 years of use. I did the math, and it is about 3 years of use if the light is left on 24/7.

The AmbientLED has achieved an ENERGY STAR label, and, as you can see, the AmbientLED line has a unique A-shape. You may also have noticed that it is orange on the top. Believe me, it glows a Warm White when on, and it is quite bright.

In fact, I have it in the lamp by my desk, and I’m guessing that I won’t have to replace it for quite a while. I wonder if I will even remember to blog about it if it doesn’t last 15 years.

If you want to invest in this light bulb now, the Philips Ambient LED Dimmable 60W Replacement Light Bulb is available for about $45.
