Samsung and Toshiba both have flexible screen displays on display Posted: 18 May 2011 03:14 PM PDT I think that we all know that the future is going to be bendable displays, and two big companies, Samsung and Toshiba, have their screens in the spotlight recently. I’ll start with the one from Toshiba, pictured here to the left. It measures at about 3 inches on the diagonal, and it is only 0.1 mm thin. It was made with an oxide semiconductor TFT to a plastic substrate at 200 degrees Celsius. This makes it light at one gram, and it can also retain image quality over a long period of time. As for the Samsung foldable AMOLED display, there is a picture of that after the jump. It has two panels with a closing radius of about 1 mm which means that they “practically touch when closed, yet show no visible crease when opened”. In fact, the developers performed about 100,000 folding and unfolding motions, and it decreases in brightness of 6 percent, which was not that visible. There is no word when either of these flexible displays will ever make it to the folding hands of the general consumer, but I would probably say in the “near future”. After all, don’t we want to live in an era where displays are as simple as overhead transparency sheets? I’ll let the future decide the answer to that one. Vieria Concept Car actually cleans the air Posted: 18 May 2011 02:48 PM PDT I think that we all know that nothing contributes to the growing problem of air pollution than the automobile. However, this Vieria concept car is not planning on being a contributor, but it will clean the air. The Vieria is described by my Source as a water purifier that “takes in dirty and dusty air, runs it through a filter beneath its passenger capsule and returns clean, fresh, breathable air”. Just think of it as the maid to the other vehicles on the road. That alone would be enough to sell the Vieria in a hopefully eco-friendly future, but it also has another green feature. It has a shiftable scissor-like wheel and axle system, so it can be thinner on the road. Apparently, this can make it easier for the Vieria to go through rush hour bottlenecks. Gunwoong Kim and Suji Kim designed this vehicle for the Michelin Challenge, and hope to have the Vieria on the road by 2021. I hope that the presence of only a few of these cars could make a dent, albeit a small one, in the air pollution problem. Perhaps other automotive companies will imitate this model, and all automobiles will be as green as the Vieria. I can see that future, but I don’t a future where cars have wheels like these. I could be wrong, though. Cool Gift Idea: Digital Picture Frames, check out our reviews. [ Vieria Concept Car actually cleans the air copyright by Coolest Gadgets ] Related Posts: |
Human-powered helicopter breaks record with a four-second flight Posted: 18 May 2011 02:07 PM PDT It seems like human-powered flight is becoming more popular, with the flight of the ornithopter in September of last year, and now a flight of a human-powered helicopter. What you see in the picture is Judy Wexler, and this is her in the Gamera, a flying machine created at the University of Maryland. She managed to keep it in the air for about 4 seconds with hand and foot pedals, which is a world record. That might not seem like a long time, and it isn’t. In comparison, the Wright Brothers flyer stayed aloft for only 12 seconds. Like it or not, the history of human flight has been accomplished with baby steps. You can watch a video of it after the jump if you want to witness this recent history. The Gamera, which is named after the Godzilla-like movie monster of the same name, is made of balsa, mylar, carbon fiber, and foam. With Wexler, the whole thing weighs in at 210 pounds. In case you are wondering if there is a future for human-propelled flight, you should probably know that the American Helicopter Society’s Sikorsky Prize will give any person who can keep a human-powered helicopter hovering in the air for 60 seconds gets $250,000. Oh, and the human-powered helicopter has to stay within a 10-meter square space, and reach a 3 meter altitude. And by the way, this prize has been around for over 30 years. Someone has to get the money and break that record sometime. Check out the Coolest Gadgets 2008 Gift Guides, Christmas shopping made easy. Boost Mobile announces Sanyo Innuendo Posted: 18 May 2011 09:27 AM PDT Hmmm – the Sanyo Innuendo is by Kyocera? OK, perhaps that sounds rather foreign to me since it would be somewhat akin to saying the Nokia smartphone by Motorola – if you get my drift. But I digress – Boost Mobile has just announced that they will be offering their latest device to the masses (at least those who jive well with Boost Mobile) in the form of the Sanyo Innuendo by Kyocera. The Sanyo Innuendo is no ordinary handset, as this QWERTY fold phone will come with an elegant, high-gloss black and silver finish which also boasts of an unique external glow-thru dial pad and sub-display on the outside. As for the internal display, your eyes will be treated to a vivid 2.8″ WQVGA screen. Innuendo will actually continue where the Sanyo Incognito left off, which incidentally is Boost's best-selling CDMA Series device to date. The Sanyo Innuendo will boast of an intuitive, customizable "application carousel" user interface that will make it easier to navigate the phone's many features. It not only delivers advanced music, video and Web browsing experiences for customers who want to remain connected to the rest of their social network all the time, it will also do so without burning a hole in your pocket during these economically trying times. After all, Boost Mobile intends to place the Innuendo on their $50 Monthly Unlimited with Shrinkage plan, so that means the longer you stay, the less dough you will need to fork out – after the $129.99 entry price point for the phone, of course. Other hardware specifications of the Sanyo Innuendo include :-

Posted: 18 May 2011 09:11 AM PDT “Oiii!” – no sir, your ears are not playing tricks on you. In fact, this is what the Verbal Bicycle Bell sets out to do – using an unconventional method of alerting other road users to your presence so that you won’t end up as another statistic. As you can more or less figure out already, the Verbal Bicycle Bell actually comprises of a bicycle speaker which is capable of recording and playing back any message in order to warn others of your presence. By default, it will announce “On your left”, but if you choose to apply some imagination and tax your vocal chords a bit, then a touch of a button will proclaim your pre-programmed message. Capable of holding a 20 second sound recording, we might see some enterprising folks use this as a verbal sales pitch machine that ends up more irritating than anything else. Featuring a built-in 44mm speaker that play messages at 80 decibels (which is roughly the equivalent of a standard vacuum cleaner), you can always rely on the standard bicycle bell sound if the need arises. Powered by a trio of LR44 batteries, the Verbal Bicycle Bell will retail for $24.95. Cool Gift Idea: Digital Picture Frames, check out our reviews. Wireless Mobile Storage For your iPad – GoFlex® Satellite Posted: 18 May 2011 07:06 AM PDT One of the restrictions of the Pad (and iPhone) is it’s lack of expandability with it annoyingly having no USB or memory card ports, thus limiting you to the space you originally purchased. Seagate aim to fill this gap with the GoFlex Mobile Wireless Storage device, effectively a portable hard drive that you connect to over Wi-Fi. To use you connect (via USB) the GoFlex 500 GB external hard drive to your PC/Mac and download any media files that you want to watch on the go, disconnect and drop the device in your pocket. Nothing new so far, now the clever part is when you want to view the files on your mobile device. The GoFlex creates it’s own Wi-Fi cloud which you then connect to and stream from. To stream media from the GoFlex you connect via it’s web interface or download the app from the AppStore (Android version coming soon), another neat feature is that it can stream different media to 3 different devices simultaneously. You can buy the Seagate GoFlex from Amazon for $199.99. Coolest Gadgets UK – For all your UK centric tech and gadget news.
