Use Mobile Minutes via Your Home Phone

Long distance phone calls. They still happen. Why pay long distance fees on your land line when you have umpteen hundred minutes on your cell phone? Yet it sure is handy having handsets all over the house. People can talk wherever they are most comfortable. A company named liGo took all these ideas into consideration and developed a new phone/cell phone accessory, BlueWave.

With BlueWave you get the convenience of your cell phone plus the accessibility of your landline handsets. Which means you can use your mobile minutes to make calls from any corded or cordless home phone unit.  Simply plug the gadget into your home phone system via phone cord. Then connect up to three cell phones via Bluetooth. That's it. When your cell phone rings downstairs you'll be able to pick it up on the phone upstairs. If you want to make a call simply pick up any handset and the signal goes through your cell phone. The three connected phones are differentiated on the top of the BlueWave, so you can stay away from calls that aren't going to your phone. Voice commands are possible too so you can do things like talk to Siri through your home phone. And you can always press buttons to get back to your home voicemail when you need to check messages.

BlueWave, £99.95 at Amazon.co.uk, is definitely a new product and currently only shipping in the UK. But for the household that loves their handsets but may not want the hassle of getting a landline or the household that just wants more handsets to talk on while using cellular minutes it is the perfect solution.

See Those Keys

I went to the eye doctor last week. Same old story, they fade a little more each time I go. Sigh. I suppose typing by the light of my screen does not help the situation. Yet we are stubborn. It will take more than an eye doctor appointment to change my computer habits. So instead I will buy more accessories to help me see!

The appropriately named Keys U See keyboard, $39.95 at FirstSTREET Online, fits perfectly into my scheme of continuing to degrade my eyesight! A standard keyboard – 104 keys including 10 key, function keys and hot keys – has been reworked by FirstSTREET. Keys are actually yellow and all letters, numbers and symbols enlarged. How big? As big as the key will allow. So yes, you can actually see where you are on the board! Keys U See connects via USB like any other keyboard. The device is designed to work with PC. There is limited Mac functionality for OS 9.0 or newer (letters and numbers work, no hot keys though). Yes, Keys U See was created for and is geared more to people with visual impairments like macular degeneration. But seriously, aren't most of us driving ourselves there by working by the light of the monitor? Give your eyes a break! Get keys you can see.

Gamers: Confess & Win

If you are a gamer, odds are that you have ditched out on something to get more game time. Dinner at your parents perhaps. Maybe a work event. Or how about studying. Playing video games is sort of the devil on the shoulder sometimes isn't it? We know there are more productive things to do and yet most players log at least 10 hours a week.

The audiophiles at Sennheiser Gaming want gamers to come to confession. No not the kind with a priest, but rather their Facebook Confession Booth. Stop by their page any time before the end of December and give them your best or worst excuses used to give you more gaming time. The player with the best confession will be rewarded big time. How big? A trip for two to electronics heaven, the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, next January. ThatWeekly prizes are also being given away. So think back on all the events you bailed on for the sake of your PC or gaming system and come to Sennheiser Gaming confession.

Prosthetic finger could be a boon

Whenever I watch Star Wars Episode III, I do wonder just how much strength does Obi Wan Kenobi has whenever he lays the smack down on Anakin Skywalker in their duel on Mustafar, especially when his hand goes up against the bionic arm of Anakin. Perhaps Obi Wan has been taking some sort of supplements that have greatly increased his bone density? Who knows, but what we do know is this – folks who are missing limbs or part of their fingers and toes will definitely love to have a working prosthesis that does not break the bank. Case in point, what you see above is a prosthetic finger which might just usher in a new age of limb replacements that are highly affordable.

Richard Van As, a South African woodworker who lost four fingers while operating a saw, came into contact with Ivan Owen, an American designer based in Washington state who did come up with a basic mechanical hand in the past. Ivan was approached to develop a low cost, open access DIY prosthetic finger design as a decent alternative to current solutions, and both of them collaborated on the project over the Internet, publishing their progress online to boot.

The initial iteration of the prototype system is not much to shout about, but at least it is a decent start. Made up of pieces of an Erector set, hair ties, zip ties, leather scraps, velcro strips, string, moldable wax, and rivets, it is a veritable collection of parts that make you wonder whether a gadget Frankenstein is in the making. Right at its core the prosthetic lies a formed hand mould alongside a simple system of cables, levers and pulleys.

This particular project is strictly not for profit, and the ultimate aim is to develop a finished prosthetic that is an actual, low-cost DIY reality for the many folks out there who need prosthetic digits, and yet cannot afford them due to circumstances in life. We wish the team the very best!

NanoQ mini quadcopter takes to the skies

Do you love all things remote controlled? If you have answered in the affirmative, then we are pleased to bring you word that QFO Labs, a startup which hails from Minneapolis, has just announced that they will be rolling out a mini quadcopter toy that they have dubbed the NanoQ. It will rely on relatively affordable 3-axis gyros and accelerometers, in order to help it remain nice and stable in mid-flight. Apart from that, it will be accompanied by a one-handed remote which integrates tilt sensors for smooth and natural control. It is different from most of the other quadrotors in the market however, as the NanoQ’s propellers will come in an inverted manner which prevents them from colliding with ceilings. This is a good thing, especially if you have your home's ceiling fan turned on.

Just what kind of dimensions does the NanoQ come in? Well, for starters, it measures a mere 5.25" across while tipping the scales at a diminutive 35 grams with a maximum payload of 10 grams. Having said that, it is capable of remaining up in the air for up to ten minutes on its rechargeable LiPo (that's lithium polymer for you) batteries, with a controlling range of up to a hundred feet (30 meters). The company hopes that the future will see multiple NanoQs competing at flying laser tag, since they are capable of “shooting” one another using onboard infrared (IR) sensors.

The NanoQ does seem to carry far more potential than just being a toy, and courtesy of its relatively low planned price of $149 a pop with its PC compatibility, it could double up as a research platform for university labs that are running on a tight budget. Whenever you hook up the controller to a PC via USB or a USB RF dongle, you are able to send it commands while accessing its sensor data and more.

Hobbit Deluxe Sting Sword

Are you looking forward to the premier of The Hobbit (the first part of the movie, anyways) which will hit the silver screen at the end of this year? Well, if you have answered in the affirmative, then you would probably want to suit up as well when the movie arrives in your locality. After all, it makes the entire movie going experience a whole lot more fun, especially when you get into the mood of things. Everyone should know of Sting by now, where it will glow in blue whenever orcs are around.

Having said that, the $24.99 Hobbit Deluxe Sting Sword from Thinkgeek will be able to help you get into the role, where it has a glowing blue feature as well as plays back battle sounds, measuring a Hobbit-ly 18-inches in length. This ancient elven sword has been passed on to Frodo Baggins from good ol' Bilbo, and this is an officially licensed product for those who are wondering about its authenticity.

Nikko Angry Birds Infrared Control iRacer

Just how far do you think that the Angry Birds franchise is able to go? Some folks figured out that they still have plenty of mileage left, and if you are part of that particular group, you can always check out the £21.99 Nikko Angry Birds Infrared Control iRacer. At least this is not an app that will help you kill time while waiting for the train or bus, but rather, it helps you bond with your kid or friends as you cozy down at home.

The Nikko Angry Birds Infrared Control iRacer are more than ready to wreak a path of destruction, being "real life" versions of its digital counterparts. Built to last and cut across the air, the bird can be catapulted thanks to the slingshot-remote which also doubles up as the charger. Once you have sent the Angry Bird "flying", you are able to control it by using the slingshot remote. There is some work to be done before you are able to enjoy a “real life” game of Angry Birds, as you will need to cut out the green pigs artwork from the giftbox beforehand, piling them up with other collapsible things. Make sure you have a ready supply of AA batteries to keep this game going.
