Transformer Business cards are more than meets the eye

Posted: 16 Jul 2010 04:32 PM PDT

Okay, I will readily admit that the headline for this post was the most obvious pun I could make with this subject matter.

However, can you really blame me? This business card, designed by Tamiya, a Japanese model kit maker, has encapsulated all the joy of pre-made plastic model kits.

The ideas is that you have your name on it, and the recipient can essentially break apart the letters from the logo and make a car, boat, or plane out of them. I notice that there is one solid piece that should probably contain the pertinent information.

After all, the purpose of a business card is so someone can recommend you. It would totally suck if they finished assembling a cool model out of your logo and name, decided that they wanted your business, and would have no idea how to contact you.

Of course, you realize that you would have to give a separate card with instructions. Unless you want to post the instructions on your business website. Now that would give a potential client a reason for going to your site!

There is one thing that this plastic business card model doesn’t have: decals. You might remember those ones that you had to soak in water, peel off, and then stick on. I always hated those things, as they never did stick right the first time, or they folded.

Super Mario Kart: The Board Game

Posted: 16 Jul 2010 04:03 PM PDT

The other day, I discovered something very disturbing about myself and the rest of the world: we are addicted to franchises. Most of the movies this summer have been sequels or movie-versions of concepts with a proven track-record of success. I went and saw The Last Airbender, and even though I enjoyed the film, I realized that I had paid to see a movie that didn’t need to be made, because Avatar:The Last Airbender series was so good.

In the same manner, I can honestly say that we probably don’t need this board game version of Super Mario Kart. After all, there is already a video game of the same name that will give players more of a rush, and the board game looks despairingly unoriginal. I’ve seen games where two players go head-to-head, and have to maneuver marbles across obstacles before. The only difference is that Super Mario Kart version has some authentic sound effects from the video game. Of course, I don’t want to judge it too harshly simply because it is part of a franchise, I haven’t played it for myself.

This board game was created by Epoch, and it was on display at the 2010 Tokyo Toy Show. I would imagine that it will probably be out shortly. Not only that, it will probably make the amount of money that it is projected, maybe even more. This is what happens when you bank on franchises.

Smart Helmet detects how hard you have crashed

Posted: 16 Jul 2010 03:40 PM PDT

This Smart Helmet, developed by Northeastern University researchers, is designed for skiers, even though I never remember skiing with a helmet on. Of course, I never biked with a helmet on either, and I think that is a requirement now. I don’t know about wearing a helm on the slopes.

The purpose of the smart helmet is to detect how much it has been impacted. Apparently, a lot of skiers are injured by hitting things like trees, rocks, and stuff.

The Smart Helmet can somehow measure the acceleration and impact, and can then report any potential injury that is based on the force of the impact.

There is some sort of LED light that will turn the screen red, to indicate that the wearer has a serious concussion. This will signal to the ski patrol that serious medical attention is required.

Of course, this could also have a military application. Just imagine what this type of helmet could do for a hurt soldier in the field.

It is a helmet that is still a concept, but I have another idea of how to improve this particular device. What if there was some panic-alert device that would send out a specific frequency to a medical team if the helmet detected a serious concussion? Think that one over, developers.

AirTurn turns sheet music electronically

Posted: 16 Jul 2010 03:00 PM PDT

Turning pages while playing a musical instrument takes almost as much talent as it takes to learn to play an instrument in the first place.  If you’ve switched to reading music on your laptop or iPad there is a way to make it easer to deal with pages.  Sadly this little page turning gadget won’t actually help you turn those paper pages that can be so troublesome.

The AirTurn connects wirelessly to your computer as a music reader.  To get it up and going you just need to plug the receiver into the USB port of your computer.  Then when you’re ready to turn the page you just have to tap your foot on the pedal.  It’ll work with most document programs, PDF readers and presentation programs.  You can get the AirTurn with pedals for $69.95 to $99.95.  It just depends if you want one or 2 pedals.  You can also go slightly cheaper and get one for $39.95, but that doesn’t include any pedals.

POD Lamp with docking station

Posted: 16 Jul 2010 02:10 PM PDT

If you’re trying to set up a desk in a dorm room you have to be smart about the space you use up.  That usually means working solely on a laptop and all of your other gadgets need to do double duty.  This POD Lamp might be worth adding to the list of gadgets to pick up before August comes around.  The light moves to all sorts of angles, plus it can hold and charge your iPod within the base of the light.

The base also helps with cable management since the cord for your MP3 player of choice just slips through the bottom of the lamp.  It features a 13 watt bulb that is said to last up to 10,000 hours, so it should last through any studying you might do throughout the year.  The light itself can function at multiple heights and angles, you just have to find the one that works for you. You can purchase one of these for $69.99 through OttLite.

Heated Hammock for cool nights

Posted: 16 Jul 2010 01:35 PM PDT

At one point in my life I thought a hammock was just a hammock.  Although there were small variations between all of them, to me they’re pretty much all created equal.  Clearly I was way off.  After all, now thanks to Hammacher you can not only have a hammock, but a heated hammock as well.  I don’t know that I’ve necessarily been deprived by not having a hammock that’s heated, but maybe you’re feeling a little neglected.  If you are you can easily pick one of these up.

The heating elements are woven into the surface of the hammock, there are a total of 4 within it.  It can generate up to 122 degrees of radiant heat that will reach your shoulder and your low back.  With your back being slowly warmed it’d be easy to nod off in your back yard even when the evening is getting cold.  It runs on rechargeable batteries that take 5 hours to charge and once charged will work for 2 and a half hours.  You can charge it up with an AC adapter that’s included with the hammock.  You can purchase it for $299.95 through Hammacher Schlemmer.

Wunda Weeder lets you lazily garden

Posted: 15 Jul 2010 07:53 PM PDT

Gardening is not a comfortable task.  Sure you can get a foam pad to prevent rocks from digging into your knees, but you’re still crouched over in the dirt with the sun blazing down on you.  It’s definitely worth all of that effort thanks to the finished product, but sometimes it might be nice to make the experience a little more enjoyable.  Thankfully one Australian inventor has created a device that creeps along the garden and lets you be far more comfortable.

The Wunda Weeder is solar powered and propels itself slowly through the garden.  That allows for you to weed, plant and transplant rows of vegetables, flowers and herbs.  It’s all solar powered including the radio.  Thanks to that big solar panel that also means you’ll be laying in the shade as you scoot through the garden.  Along the side of the trolley are spots to put seeding trays or buckets.  Currently they’re building round 2 of these machines and changing it just a little from the original prototype.  That does mean that these aren’t available for purchase just yet, but you can view the details on it through the Wunda Weeder website.

Flipper USB Connector simplifies your USB port

Posted: 15 Jul 2010 06:45 PM PDT

We have all found ourselves jammed underneath a desk and craning our necks to try to see that tiny USB port located at the back of the computer.  Then you get the joy of trying to figure out which direction you need to put in the USB plug into the port.  Thankfully someone is making it a little easier to plug in those USB gadgets.

This Flipper USB Connector allows for you to just jam in that USB gadget without even trying.  These connectors are completely compatible with the current USB designs.  Each of the plugs offers up 4 different ports.  It makes you wish computer makers had been using this design all along.  However, at least it’s better have this late than never.  You can check these out on their website to get some info on availability.  Although it looks like you’ll just have to contact them for that type info.

Acer Canada to roll out new 3D projectors

Posted: 15 Jul 2010 05:48 PM PDT

Acer Canada has plans to introduce new 3D video projectors for the masses in the Great White North, where it is made possible thanks to a clever combination of the projectors’ DLP 3D projection capabilities as well as high refresh rates. Because of that, a flat surface of any wall can be turned into an impromptu 3D screen, just make sure that the color is light enough (white is best) for the best image quality, since a yellow or orange painted wall can be quite disconcerting on the eyes when you project a video. We will take a closer look at the projectors in the extended post.

The Acer X1230PS will target home theater enthusiasts, as it offers brilliant visuals regardless of whether you are viewing video, game content or photos among others. There is an incredible level of realism and video immersion achieved via this short-throw projector, where you will be able to enjoy clear, large images up to 109-inches diagonal even while positioned as close as 6.5-feet from the screen, doing away with a long projection distance. You will be able to enjoy a cinematic aspect ratio of 16:9, not to mention 4:3 when the situation calls for it. The Acer X1230PS delivers XGA resolution (1,024 x 768 pixels) as well as 2500 ANSI lumens and 3000:1 contrast ratio. also heightens the color and clarity of the images. Connectivity options include composite video, s-video mini-DIN, component video, D-sub for a PC analog signal, as well as USB mini B, and RS232 mini-DIN control interface. It will retail for 699 Canadian dollars.

As for the Acer X1261, this 3D projector delivers up to 2500 ANSI lumens, a 3700:1 contrast ratio and a vertical refresh rate of 50-120Hz, all in native XGA resolution and 4:3 aspect ratio with the ability to be adjusted to a 16:9 aspect ratio if you happen to view video content from Blu-ray Discs and DVD. It will connect to other devices via composite video, component video, and S-video mini-DIN, as well as a RS232 mini-DIN control interface. If you’re looking for a decent 3D projector without breaking the bank, then the Acer X1261 represents good value for money for 599 Canadian dollars. All purchases come with a 1-year warranty, while the lamp is guaranteed for 3 months.
