Aquastar lets you scoot – underwater

Posted: 30 Apr 2011 12:56 PM PDT

Remember the scooter craze that happened around a decade ago? Yeah, where kids as well as adults alike start traveling around on those highly portable two-wheelers, letting those who commute using their legs primarily zip around in double quick time. Well, it seems that the idea has been brought forward to the underwater world in the form of the Aquastar – of course this model will not come with wheels since it won’t have any need for those when you are submerged, but at least you can bring a date along with you with this.

The Aquastar AS2 two-seater scooter is a reality after going through intense design and engineering moments, and the fact that you have someone to accompany you underwater at the controls ought to do away with any fear of drowning in the deep, leaving you and your partner undiscovered for centuries. The AS2 is touted to be the perfect form of “transport” for couples who want to explore underwater wonders in an extremely safe environment, as both riders are free to dismount, swim around and climb back aboard.

It must be noted that the diving helmet has been carefully integrated into the scooter’s body, where the rider's head will go inside an air chamber within the helmet that will be constantly supplied with air from scuba tanks. These scuba tanks are able to last up to 70 minutes when attached to the front body of the scooter. Apart from that, the helmet itself sports a flat fog resistant glass, and is 99% distortion free so that you get to enjoy a clear underwater experience while reducing the noxious feeling that is commonly associated with the bubble top models of yore.

Since this is a newer model, it makes perfect sense for it to be sleeker, faster, and much lighter than its predecessors. A couple of electric motors will power this scooter, one for forward movement and another for vertical movement, in order to deliver precise control, maneuverability and safety. If you know how to operate a motorbike, this works in a similar manner.

Scosche Industries announces Scosche freeKEY

Posted: 30 Apr 2011 12:48 PM PDT

Ever heard of Scosche Industries before? The peripheral manufacturing company has just come up with the Scosche freeKEY, which in essence is a wireless keyboard for Bluetooth-enabled devices such as tablets and smartphones. After all, tablets and the majority of smartphones these days come with touchscreen capability, so it can be quite hard getting used to a virtual keyboard since you have been using a standard keyboard for the longest time already, where you are in love with the tactile feedback received on your fingertips instead of just haptic vibration.

The Scosche freeKEY is also water resistant, making it ideal to work whenever you are on-the-go, and boasts of a range of up to 30 feet – this figure, we would presume, would mean having it work without any obstacles or walls in between, where that would definitely drop the working range by quite a drastic distance. When you are done with it, just roll it up and you’re good to go, stashing it away easily in either a backpack or a purse.

Made out of silicone, the Scosche freeKEY will play nice with the Bluetooth 2.0 connectivity standard, where it is compatible with the following operating systems – iOS, Android, Mac OS X and Windows. When you pair it up with a particular device, the freeKEY will go ahead and re-pair automatically with said device the next time the keyboard comes to life, making it as dummy proof as possible. Not only that, Scosche has also thrown in a retractable USB to micro-USB charge cable to make charging a snap wherever you are.

Add on this accessory into your wish list for $59.99, and of course if you happen to receive this as a present from someone, it is about time you get a Bluetooth-enabled device, don’t you think so, especially since you have been stuck in the last century with an old school featurephone?

Sceptre releases new 40″ LCD TV

Posted: 30 Apr 2011 12:41 PM PDT

If you have not yet made the jump over to the world of flat screen TVs and are rockin’ it out in the last century with a chunky old CRT, then you might be interested in what Sceptre has on offer at the moment – a spanking new stereo inspired 40″ LCD FullHD 1080P TV that sports SRS TruSurround XT and TruVolume. It will come encased in an elegant ultra glossy black design, sporting new surround sound technology in order to re-create an expansive three dimensional sound field so that viewer experience and enjoyment are enhanced.

This will also be the latest addition to Sceptre's range of design oriented and environmentally friendly HDTVs, making it the ideal candidate for those who want to make an upgrade from what they have (a 32″ model in your living room, perhaps?) without having to take out a new mortgage on your home. This 40″ LCD TV is touted to deliver a similar attention to detail compared to pricier units, including its fingerprint-magnet glossy black finish and a swivel base that increases flexibility and its space saving wall mounting capability.

Throwing in SRS TruSurround XT and TruVolume will ensure your ears enjoy 3D sound, while it also does away with background noise, with benefits including an increase in dialogue clarity and optimized bass for an enhanced home theater experience.

Boasting a couple of 10 Watt speakers with a 7-Band equalizer, a 90,000:1 Dynamic Contrast Ratio, a quartet of HDMI ports, 1.07 Billion Colors, and a solitary USB port, this is flexible and powerful enough for you to watch a movie or to make it as a secondary (albeit large) computer monitor. Retailing for $599.99, would you be willing to part with that amount of cash? Apart from Sceptre, what other budget-friendly TVs would you recommend to the rest of our readers which offer above average performance?

Robot is inspired by the caterpillar

Posted: 29 Apr 2011 07:49 PM PDT

I have said before that if you are going to build a robot, then you should imitate something of nature. I have seen robots inspired from snakes and birds, but this is the first one that I have seen that have looked to the caterpillar.

Actually, it is a certain type of caterpillar. Have you ever seen that type of bug that curls into a ball when it is touched? This is what you can see here in the video after the jump, and in slow motion, it is quite impressive.

A team from an organization known as Tufts has got some funding from DARPA to create the GoQBot, a soft-bodied silicone robot that is four inches long with actuators made of shape-memory alloy coils. It already has a push-off time of less than 250 milliseconds.

You might be wondering why in the world someone would create a robot that can do this. Apparently this “ballistic rolling” behavior could be used on other sort of robots, like the ones modeled after worms and the aforementioned snakes.

I see a world full of “bugged bugs” that will ball up for protection when they are discovered. Hopefully, the important information will be downloaded by the time they self-destruct. Yes, the future is a buggy age.

TiGr Bike Lock

Posted: 29 Apr 2011 07:22 PM PDT

I have seen a lot of bike locks in the past, but most of them are pretty tricky when it comes to storing on the bicycle.

The TiGr is a titanium “bow” that its extremely flexible, and it has “lock claims flexibility, hack-proof strength, and a sexy design worthy of your ride”. It can stretch out to about five foot five inches, and then both ends lock together.

As you can see, it is one of those bikes that locks the wheels together so that no one can ride off with it. Personally, I like the type that lock up against something like a tree or a bar, but that is just me.

What is really interesting is how the lock is stored on the bike. It can go around the frame along the crossbar when not in use. I guess that’s better than most of the horseshoe locks that need a special holster, and some of those thick wire locks can get tangled around the frame.

Granted, this is a Kickstarter project, which means there is going to need some funds to get it going. It could also use a new name, as I can only understand part of its current one. “Ti” as the elemental symbol for titanium, but I checked the symbol for “Gr”, and it’s not on the periodic table. Don’t just make up a “Gr” element just so you can have a name.
