The Emperor 1510 is one awesome seat of power

Posted: 15 Dec 2009 03:39 PM PST

emperor1510-200_cEqw5_12-500x282Some of you may remember the If Blofeld was a gamer article that we posted a while ago that brought the Emperor 200 from NovelQuest into the spotlight. This was at CES last January, and it cost a hefty price of about $40,000.

I’m not certain how much reception the company received over that product, but I can tell you that I really don’t have 40 grand to spare. Perhaps this is why they developed the Emperor 1510, which costs $4,000.

Yes, that is about one tenth of the price, and from what I have read, it looks like it does essentially the same things. It appears to have the 3 big LCD monitors, and I hope it has the touchscreen control center.

I had a chance to try it out at CES last year, and I remember playing a very cool game on it that really made me feel like I was in the heart of the action.

I would imagine that the station is called the Emperor because the Emperor from the Star Wars movies would have absolutely loved this. In fact, this beats out that big old chair he sat in in the Return of the Jedi by far. Remember how he had to tell someone to fire the big gun? With the Emperor 1510, the wrinkly ugly guy could have just aimed and fired on his own.

There is a rumor going around that the Prince of Dubai has already ordered something like ten of these. If you have the money to spare, then you should be able to order them up now.

iMote Kid Friendly Remote Control keeps kids safe

imote-kid-remote-264x500

When you have a preschooler in the house, you’re always having to worry about them stumbling onto a TV channel that they shouldn’t be on.  There are various ways of handling that issue, but this is one of the more simple ways I’ve seen.  It’s a remote made just for your preschooler.  Instead of being filled with numbers, it has five programable buttons.  On those buttons you can program in your child’s top 5 favorite channels.

That way when they’re flipping through the channels, they’re only flipping through the ones you have already approved to be on the remote.  The remote comes with 100+ colorful sticker that include the logos of popular TV channels to make the remote easy to customize.  In addition to those channels, there is also a TV power button and a volume button.  The remote is also safe for kids to chew on.  It’s meant for ages 3 and up.  You can purchase it for $29.99 from Think Geek.

The Solar Digital Window Thermometer

Posted: 15 Dec 2009 10:22 AM PST

Solar-Digital-Window-Thermometer

Window thermometers are a convenient thing to keep around.  They keep you informed of the temperature outside, so that you aren’t stuck going outside to find out just how cold or warm it is outdoors.  Well this window thermometer does tell the temperature just like you might have guessed, but it also manages to do it in an eco-friendly manner.

This thermometer sticks to the window and can easily be removed when you want to clean the window.  It’ll let you know the current temperature, as well as stating the high and low temperatures for the day.  It’s solar powered and stores away the energy so that it’ll continue to work even at night or in low light situations.  You can purchase the Solar Digital Window Thermometer for $25 from Amazon.

Lucky Clover USB Speaker

If you’re not that into the usual shaped speakers, these are a nice happy medium.  They aren’t overly cutesy, but they’re still brightly colored.  Plus they’re shaped like clovers, so you can at least pretend that it’ll bring you good luck.  The look of the speakers are a bit more female, but thankfully these don’t actually come in  just pink despite their feminine appearance.

These small USB speakers have a rechargeable battery that only requires you to plug it into a USB port every so often to charge the battery again.  These 2.5W speakers will work with both your Mac as well as a PC.  It comes in a total of 5 different colors, including brown, green, pink, white and finally yellow.  You can purchase the Lucky Clover USB Speaker for $15 from Gadget 4 All.

Solar Power Electronic Calculator Blue with 4 Port USB 2.0 Hub

Posted: 15 Dec 2009 05:30 AM PST

solar-calculator

First there were calculators, followed by calculators that came with a solar panel somewhere on the front segment right below the display, where you no longer need to rely fully on batteries to keep those number crunching moments going – only during the daytime, of course. Well, now the humble solar calculator has entered into its next iteration, known as the Solar Power Electronic Calculator Blue with 4 Port USB 2.0 Hub. Guess getting juiced up from the sun isn’t enough that it has to boast a 4-port USB 2.0 hub to feel adequate with the rest of its gadget brethren. Compatible with Windows-based systems only (Windows 2000 and above), the Solar Power Electronic Calculator Blue with 4 Port USB 2.0 Hub will retail for $12.69 each when purchased in bulk.

Star Wars Poker Chip set

Posted: 15 Dec 2009 05:00 AM PST

star-wars-pokerGuess it is a universal trait in mankind – the urge to gain something for nothing, which is why gambling is a rife habit in many parts of the world, regardless of whether the activity has been legalized or not. Heck, gambling isn’t just reserved for those of us living here on earth – it is a galaxy-wide habit, if not there would not exist the Star Wars Poker Chip set.

The Jedi have an amazing poker chip set. The solid black case holds 200 chips that glow like lightsaber blades. They’re even illustrated with portraits of the masters of the Force – Yoda, Obi-Wan, Skywalker, and everyone’s favorite lost boy, Vader. There’s even a chromed metal representation of Vader’s Flying Pillbox to use as the dealer button and flashy cards with the Rebel Alliance symbol on the backs. Yep, those Jedi sure do know how to put on a classy game of cards.

This will most probably be a great gift for those who are Star Wars fans, but if you’re having a tough time trying to raise $149.99 to bring this puppy home under the Christmas tree, then perhaps a trip to Vegas might be on the cards?

VTech announces two-line phone with DECT 6.0 technology

Posted: 15 Dec 2009 04:30 AM PST

vtech-ds6151

Do you still deal with a landline back at home, or have you moved on to the wireless lifestyle with nothing but cellphones in your home to receive calls from other people? VTech is certainly an old hand where landline phones are concerned, and they have now announced their first two-line phone with DECT 6.0 technology for homes across America. The DS6151 is touted to be the most affordable system of its kind at just $79.95, where it will be ideal for small and growing businesses as well as busy households. Learn more about the VTech DS6151 in the extended post.

Based on DECT 6.0 technology, the feature-rich and expandable VTech DS6151 will boast superior sound quality, range and interference-free calls. Despite being a two-line system, it has been strategically priced at nearly half the cost of similarly-featured phones. For folks who sadly are still stuck with a dial up Internet service, at least the DS6151 is able to cater to that while offering a separate line for other family members to use. Receiving and making calls are not the only things that the DS6151 is good at – it also doubles up as a digital answering machine with a dedicated mailbox for each line. With that in mind, you need not fret that you might just miss that all important business call whenever you are not around at home.

The DS6151 is also expandable, where you have the option to expand up to 12 handsets using a single phone jack. Needless to say, the DS6301 accessory handset will be sold separately for $29.95, so unless you own a really big home, we’re guessing you’ll need at most a couple of DS6301s. Other features include a base speakerphone for those important family meetings, while one can also transfer and conference between handsets. A large LCD display with blue backlighting makes it easier to read the caller ID when it kicks in.

Bloodhound cellphone detector

Posted: 15 Dec 2009 04:00 AM PST

bloodhound

Heard of Berkeley Varitronics Systems before? Never? Well, take note of the company now as they have just annonuced a new advanced hand-held cellphone detector, where it is aptly known as the Bloodhound, paying homage to our four-legged friends who fall under that category, boasting a keen sense of smell. The Bloodhound is able to empower security officers to scan real-time for unauthorized cellphone activity in correctional facilities, helping detect the precise location of the caller courtesy of a Direction Finding Antenna.

Interestingly enough, I just found out today that security officers are losing the battle since contraband cellphones get more commonplace, being smuggled into correctional facilities so that criminal activity can continue behind the bars. Locating and confiscating contraband cellphones which are being smuggled can be a tricky task, even with the help of monitoring sensors, X-ray scanners, metal detectors, drug and bomb dogs. Even cellphone jamming isn’t sufficient to address the growing problem of handset smuggling, which is why the Bloodhound cellphone detector was invented. It is definitely a boon since it is capable of detecting a cellphone within a correctional facility without interfering with citizens’ or public safety communications.

Just like its flesh-and-blood counterpart, the Bloodhound was designed to track down and pinpoint contraband cell phones without interfering with authorized communication channels. It uses a high speed scanning multi-band receiver harnessed to a DF-Direction Finding Antenna, enabling security officers to ’sniff out’ the RF energy – similar in method as to how an actual Bloodhound dog is able to detect a scent which a human could never discern. The Bloodhound’s special algorithm can trigger on to a cellphone while it is still active, and a headphone jack with a progressive audible alert tone and an accompanying vibrator is able to alert security officers of cellphone activity whenever they get closer to the source. Don’t you think that teachers in schools and lecturers at colleges would love to get their hands on the Bloodhound as well?

New LG Chocolate Touch

Posted: 14 Dec 2009 10:22 PM PST

LG Chocolate Touch

The LG Chocolate Touch (Verizon Wireless) is a sleek and stylish piece of kit, especially with its fabulous sound quality for music playback and recording. One fun feature is the ability to ‘join the band’ when playing your favourite tunes! So, if you fancy drumming along or hitting the ivories to show your own musical talents – you can. You can also set the phone up to vibrate rhythmically to whatever’s playing. When recording your own sounds to the phone, it’s a simple three touch operation – go to the media centre and choose ‘my sounds’ from the ‘music and tones’ file – then just touch the record button and away you go. Alternatively, you can download music either from signing up to V Cast Music with Rhapsody (free download from www.verizonwireless.com/music), giving you the ability to download or purchase music and, by using the USB connection, you can drag and drop from your PC. A minor downside is that V Cast Music with Rhapsody isn’t Mac or Linux compatible – only available for Windows Vista, XP or 2000.

Navigation of the applications is, as you’d expect, pretty neat and simple, with the ability to drag and drop to your home page those you’re always using. It’s touch screen capabilities are pretty good and very responsive – you don’t have to hit the screen several times for it to recognise your prodding. It’s lightweight but feels quite robust and, with it’s choice of covers (black or purple), you can adapt it to your mood – well, if you only have two moods that is!

Unfortunately I wasn’t able to access network as not covered in the UK, so can’t comment on download speeds or some of the other functions and applications available on the phone. Also, because its wireless, I was scratching my head for a little while trying to work out where the sim card goes – d’oh!
