Stair Rover skateboard capable of going down a flight of stairs

Posted: 24 Jun 2012 05:30 AM PDT

I don’t know about you, but old school skateboarders would definitely say that being able to go down a flight of stairs while performing plenty of stunts is the way to go, and not through the use of the pansy Stair Rover skateboard which is said to be able to ride down a flight of stairs. Don’t you think that this is a wee bit out of whack? After all, it more or less defeats the purpose of owning and traveling on a skateboard, no? The Star Rover skateboard might be more appealing to those who are just starting off in the sport of skateboarding.

Thanks to the efforts of London-based product designer Po-Chih Lai, this one off skateboard is known as the Stair Rover. According to Po-Chih Lai, "The piece creates a groundbreaking form of sport which previously never existed and utilizes the hidden energy of our cities – stairs. Stair Rover – the Stairboard is a product that relies on the other product – stairs, which are found easily within the human habitat, especially in cities."

This current board is the eighth model which was developed, sporting eight wheels and mounted two-per-side on a pair of trucks which pivot to follow the contours of the stairs. The flexible deck itself is constructed from maple and bamboo, where the trucks and associated hardware are made out of aluminum, with rubber being the main material used to make the wheels. While other approaches were explored in some of his earlier models, those include trucks that come with a trio of wheels on each side, in addition to a traditional two-wheeled front truck that has been combined with one big three-wheeler in the back, while a deck is equipped with four sets of two-wheeled trucks, doing away with the usual two instead. Hopefully it is able to hold up well in real life.
