The Brionvega ts Clock Radio gets cubed

Just by glancing at this small clock radio, it makes it appear as if it’s an incredibly complicated device.  However, despite all of those dials, it’s a pretty basic clock.  It lets you know the time just like every other clock and can even play the radio.  It just happens to look interesting while it does all of those normal boring functions, which is enough to make it stand out in a crowd of monotonous clock radios.

In addition to having a clock and an FM radio, it also has a built-in indoor thermometer.  All of the information like the time is displayed on an LCD display with a backlight.  It also has the usual snooze button that comes in handy on those mornings when you’re not quite ready to drag yourself out of that warm bed.  It comes in Sun Orange, Snow White and Night Black.  Unfortunately, it is a bit pricey.  You can purchase it for £289.00 or about $462.

Samurai Air Sword

Posted: 05 Jan 2010 12:31 PM PST

smswd098709-834-thumb-550x473-30978Okay, this is probably going to be the last gadget that I am going to report on that isn’t related to CES 2010, at least for a few weeks. It is a simple device from a company called Happinet known as the Samurai Air Sword.

This battery powered sword handle uses two AAA batteries for the power to swoosh. With this, you can add some serious power of slicing to your air swipes, as well as some terrifically fatal thrusts. It has 48 different sound effects in all, and each one is probably activated by your different hand gestures.

Now some of you are probably asking: “what is this good for?” To that, I simply will respond: “Clearly, you have never seen Kill Bill” Yes, now you can act out your fantasies of being Uma Thurman’s character, and slicing up all those masked Crazy 88 guys in that one Japanese restaurant. That is a scene worth seeing, by the way. Yes, it is very violent, and Uma does hack up a lot of people. Just realize that it is all fake blood, which is very easy to see.

This samurai sword without a blade is available from Happinet online in colors of blue and red. It will cost you about 1,660 yen or $18 American dollars.

The USB Apple Speaker

Posted: 05 Jan 2010 12:16 PM PST

apple-usb-speakers-500x375

When someone mentions an Apple USB speaker, most people picture sleek lines and a massive price tag.  Something with a whole lot of class and sophistication, not to mention a very recognizable brand name.  Well if that’s what you had in mind then you’ll be sorely disappointed by these Apple USB Speakers.  However, if you have a thing for quirky speakers then these little apples will work out just fine.

These USB speakers even have a small keychain attached to the side to make carting the speaker around a little bit easier.  It also has a rechargeable Lithium ion battery that makes the speaker just a little more environmentally friendly.    As well as having the usual 3.5mm stereo audio connector, which allows for it to hook up to MP3 players, your laptop and anything else with that type of connector.  The apple comes in a few different colors, such as yellow, red, pink, green and black.  You can purchase it for $13 from USB Brando.

Cobra XRS 9970G has color touchscreen

Posted: 05 Jan 2010 12:05 PM PST

XRS9970G_LGWhen I first saw that Cobra had invented a fuzzbuster with a touchscreen, I couldn’t help but think that this was some device to get rid of lint or other forms of fuzz, and wondered why a device like that would need a touchscreen.

However, the Cobra XRS 9970G is a fuzzbuster that is designed to avoid the fuzz that we all hate: the type that give speeding tickets. Of course, these are illegal in some states, but they are handy for staying off the cop-radar in the states that do not outlaw them.

One of the biggest problems with these fuzzbusters is that they are very hard to program and use. It’s one of those devices that has a manual, and you probably need to use it. The 9970G’s touchscreen makes it very user-friendly, and allows for simple setup and use.

The 9970G also has a GPS chip with “15 laser/radar bands alerting duties”. It also has an AURA database that will keep the user alert of traffic cameras, dangerous intersections, and my least personal favorite, speed traps.

The Cobra XRS 9970G weighs about 6.5 oz and is only 5 x 3 x 2 inches. That’s small enough to be out of the way, but still ready when needed. It will cost about $389. You might want to add up all your speeding tickets over the past few years and determine whether or not this is a wise purchase. That, or you could just slow down…

AirStash Boosts iPhone Storage Wirelessly

Posted: 05 Jan 2010 11:36 AM PST

2010.01.05sairs

Back when the classic iPod was released with 160GB of memory, it seemed as if the amount of memory on Apple devices could only get better and better.  Then the iPhone and iPod Touch came out and had a fraction of the memory.  Sure, they’re much prettier than the rest of the iPods released by Apple, but they’re lacking all of the storage space that we all know and love.  Well this AirStash is used to wirelessly give your iPhone and iPod Touch the memory boost it needs.

The details are the AirStash are a little limited as of now.  They’re just allowing a sliver of the information to leave you craving more on the device.  Particularly how much it will end up costing you.  It does promise to expand the storage of your device with a wireless memory card that takes swappable SD cards.  All of this can hook up to your computer through the USB port.  I imagine that details will start trickling out later this week.

Samsung IceTouch PMP with transparent AMOLED screen

Posted: 05 Jan 2010 11:02 AM PST

500x_icetouch_blue_011_copyRight now, I am writing from Las Vegas, and waiting for CES 2010 to officially begin. I’ll be attending CES Unveiled later this afternoon, where I will get a lot of “sneak peaks” at new products. In the meantime, there have been a lot of new products that have been getting leaked to the media.

For example, the IceTouch (YP-H1) from Samsung. This is a new PMP with “the world’s first 2-inch, full-color, transparent Active Matrix Organic Light Emitting Diode (AMOLED) touch-screen display”. Yes, someone finally made a PMP with a completely transparent screen, and that someone was Samsung. Be sure that the history books are updated.

The IceTouch can function as “a DVD-quality video player, studio quality audio player, an ultra-portable photo album, and FM radio and even a portable storage device”. It supports such audio formats as MP3, WMA, OGG, FLAC, AAC, M4A, MP3HD codecs, as well as video playback for MPEG4, WMV, H.264, Xvid and Divx file formats.

The IceTouch has 16GB worth of memory, and the user interacts with it using a “TouchWiz Sweep” Interface. I’m not certain what that is, but it is “designed to provide a comfortable grip and give users new options for interacting with their player”.

The IceTouch comes in white with customizable skins of pink, blue, purple, and grey. It will be on display at Samsung’s booth at CES, but there is no word on a price or date of availability.

Canon X Mark I is green

Posted: 05 Jan 2010 08:30 AM PST

canon-xmark1Just how green is the Canon X Mark I calculator? Well, for starters, it looks very Apple-sque, and is made up from recycled PowerShot lenses – at least where the glass elements are concerned. At $30 a pop, this makes for a very expensive calculator compared to those Made-in-China staples that tend to break down when you need it the most. Well you can tell that plenty of love has gone into its design, where the X Mark I will incorporates curves and designs that are not too far off from the award-winning range of PowerShot Digital cameras. Besides, it is fully solar-powered, helping reduce waste while making it virtually useable anywhere. Pick from either black or white colors.

Scoring Karaoke Game

Posted: 05 Jan 2010 08:00 AM PST

scoring-karaokeLove karaoke and busting your lungs out in the presence of family and friends? Well, just like BO, most people would throw an uncomfortable smile at you whenever you sing, just because they’re trying to be nice and not hurt your feelings by letting you know what they really think. Good thing machines are unfeeling and cold, hence the Scoring Karaoke Game to let you know how well you really are doing.

This is the only karaoke microphone that detects the pitch of each note you sing. It has 100 songs programmed into its memory, allowing you to sing along with songs played through your television–scoring mode will display your performance as being too high or too low in pitch. The microphone communicates wirelessly with its control box, which plugs directly into your television with the included AV cable, freeing you from a typical microphone’s cord that may constrict your movements. Song lyrics by artists such as The Beatles, Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, and more are displayed on your screen, and you can score your performances–even play them back for critique. You can download new songs onto the microphone by plugging it into your computer using the included USB cable or using its SD card slot (SD card not included). Includes two AA batteries and AC adapter.

And if you are not happy with the score, best not to throw the Scoring Karaoke Game against the wall, otherwise the $199.95 you spent on it could have been better used for some vocal lessons.

Skype video calls take high definition route

Posted: 05 Jan 2010 07:45 AM PST

skype-hd

Virtually anyone could have seen it coming, but what nobody made much mention of it. I’m talking about the progression of instant messaging. Did you notice how far Skype has come from the time of its release? First from offering IM services to VoIP, technology has finally caught up with our needs (or more like wants), with Skype continuing to lead the revolution in face-to-face online video communication by boasting support for High Definition Skype video calls on computers alongside Skype software that has already been embedded into Internet-connected widescreen TVs from an array of its consumer electronics manufacturer partners. Next thing you know, we’ll be having full High Definition video calls, followed by the next logical step – 3D (isn’t that supposed to be all the rage at CES this year?) More on HD Skype video calls at CES right after the jump.

The latest version of Skype for Windows is able to deliver up to 720p HD-quality video calling at 1,280 x 720 resolution, and at up to 30 frames per second – now how about that! You ought to be able to see your better half in greater clarity, warts and all for a smoother and richer video calling experience. Making an HD video call does require more resources though, where you are required to use a high-speed broadband connection, not to mention purchasing newer hardware in the form of an HD webcam to run with your machine that has at least a 1.8GHz dual-core processor.

Now the question is this – where the heck are you supposed to be able to purchase HD webcams? Fret not dear readers, CES 2010 will be the place where faceVsion and In Store Solutions will roll out new HD webcams from their stable, touting them to be optimized to play nice with Skype. Your processor need not work that hard anymore with these new Skype Certified HD webcams as they will handle the video encoding and processing onboard. The FV TouchCam N1 will be available from faceVsion from February onwards, where you can pick up a model with and without microphone for $99 and $69, respectively. In Store Solutions will release two new HD encoding webcams as well – the FREETALK HD PRO which is going for $120 and the FREETALK HD PRO PLUS that is a wee bit more expensive at $140. Both of these will hit the market in two months’ time.

IPEVO Tubular Wireless Speakers

Posted: 05 Jan 2010 04:00 AM PST

ipevo-tubular

IPEVO is well known for their range of VoIP devices, especially those that function in tandem with Skype. Well, the company’s back at CES 2010 yet again with their latest release known as the Tubular. The Tubular comprises of a couple of three-watt speakers which can be hooked for two-way stereo sound. Apart from that, you can also live out the wireless lifestyle since Tubular is Bluetooth-enabled, where it can be used with just about any Bluetooth-enabled music player. This would mean PCs, notebooks, netbooks, cellphones and iPods are fair game to the IPEVO Tubular. We’ll take a closer look at the IPEVO Tubular wireless speakers right after the jump.

It is pretty evident where the Tubular receive its name from – via the special design of its interlocking left and right speakers. Both speakers can be locked together in a tube shape, and when they are required to see action, they are easily separated. Rejoining them does not require any rocket science – all you need is a gentle twist and you’re good to go. Featuring a lightweight, compact and modern design, the speakers are highly portable as we’re pretty sure you can always make more room in your luggage to tote around another 9.5 ounces of items.

Bluetooth pairing might get a little bit tricky for first timers, and it would be best to have an experienced hand guide you through it. The multifunction button on the primary speaker helps you achieve a Bluetooth connection, in which it also doubles up as an On/Off button, with a couple of other separate buttons for volume control. When paired with selected Bluetooth devices, all three buttons can also function as a method of navigation through tracks while performing play and pause functions. It features standard Bluetooth performance boundaries including the 10 meter radius, but goes one up as you can use your own portable media player as the remote control. Capable of running up to 8 hours on a single charge with a standby time of up to 100 hours, the Tubular Wireless Speakers from IPEVO will retail for $79.
