LG’s LM230WF4 display is 3D with 1080p Posted: 04 Dec 2009 04:29 PM PST Considering all of the 3D action that I saw at CES last January, it is not surprising that LG is getting into the game. Not only are they now in the game, but they are on the verge of becoming a star player. The company announced that they are the first to produce an LCD panel with 3D and 1080p capabilities. This monitor is a 23-inch LM230WF4, and I am guessing that you will have to use the glasses that the model is wearing from the photo, and I’m also guessing that these glasses are probably electronic so they can have the flash effect that is necessary for the 3D effects that I saw at last January’s CES. It’s hard to believe that they put 1080p and 3D in the same package, but they also gave it 400cd/m2 brightness, a 1000:1 contrast ratio, as well as a 3ms response time. LG intends to offer trial services of 3D broadcasting in the second half of 2010 in Korea, Japan, and the United Kingdom. Strangely enough, we don’t have a price, availability date, or when this guy will be available for buying. Considering all the 3D hype that will probably occur at CES 2010, I’m guessing it will be sooner rather than later. Cool Gift Idea: Digital Picture Frames, check out our reviews. Mr. Christmas outlet turns your display into a show Posted: 04 Dec 2009 04:18 PM PST It’s been said that 35% of the population put up Christmas lights during the holidays. Which is cool, but only about one percent of that group go all out and have a light show (remember the Wizards of Winter light show video on youtube?). Well those who brave the snow to erect their lights, just don’t want to go to the trouble to set up tons of lights and blow molds and then connect them to a computer. Most people who do start doing that in August. Most don’t think of putting up lights until the weekend after Thanksgiving. Too bad there isn’t a one stop shop for helping the average Joe to take his light display to the next level. Enter Mr. Christmas. The Mr. Christmas Lights and Sounds of Christmas lighting outlet can power 7,200 miniature lights from it’s six power outlets. And are programmed to synchronize your lights to twenty different holiday songs. And to make sure people can hear the those tunes, the Outlet comes with a portable speaker with full volume control and the ability to play the songs either in order or at random. You can even program the songs in order or to skip a few. Completely weatherized to guard against moisture and dirt, the Mr. Christmas Lights and Sounds of Christmas lighting outlet is UL listed for outdoor use. Cost is about $116 from Amazon. Cue Transiberian Railroad, please. Hat Tip – The Grid Coolest Gadgets UK – For all your UK centric tech and gadget news. Gryphon Stealth Wingsuits could replace parachutes Posted: 04 Dec 2009 04:00 PM PST So what are we looking at here, a still shot from the next Transformers movie? No, believe it or not, that is a human, one wrapped up in a wing-like contraption. This is a little pet project of the Special Parachute and Logistics Consortium called the Gryphon Next Generation Parachute System. The idea is instead of soldiers bail out of planes with parachute things on, they put something on that helps them take full advantage of the sky. In other words, it isn’t a parachute with a big silk canopy that is slowly falling to the earth like giant slow-moving target. No, this Gryphon Next Generation Parachute System would allow a parachuting soldier to get far away (about 30 miles) and would be invisible to radar. Yes, I’m sure I’m not the only ones who are thinking this, but I would like to think that something like this would help jet-pack technology. Of course, they would need some sort of jet propulsion. Hopefully it would not end up like the first intercontinental Jetpack flight. Dang, what I wouldn’t give to try out something like that. Of course, this doesn’t look very safe. I suppose there will be a lot of soldiers who will need special training for these babies. Check out the Coolest Gadgets 2008 Gift Guides, Christmas shopping made easy. Pac-Man watch celebrates your favorite chomper Posted: 04 Dec 2009 03:31 PM PST Now here is something that I would have wanted back in fourth grade: a Pac-Man watch. Granted, it’s not as cool as a Mickey Mouse Watch, but that’s only because Pac-Man didn’t have any hands. When I first saw this watch, I thought that what I was seeing was a watch with a display screen. In other words, I saw this and thought: “Cool! A watch where Pac-man roams around the edge and eternally chases a cherry and purple ghost.” In all honesty, I don’t think that is what it is. It would appear that the hands are not digital, and the Pac-man is described as “an invisible second hand”. Too bad, because the LCD display watch with Pac-Man would have been cool. Yeah, this looks like a watch designed for die-hard Pac-man fans, and there are only going to be 500 of them made, each of them marked with a specific serial number. It costs about $129.99, and there is even a bundle version that includes a free copy of Pac-Man for the PC. I don’t know whether you would call this a deal, as you could probably get a watch for a much cheaper price than this. As for the free Pac-Man game, I’m sure you could probably find it on Xbox Live or the Nintendo Wii channel. Cool Gift Idea: Digital Picture Frames, check out our reviews. TruePower UCS Power Outlet has built-in USB ports Posted: 04 Dec 2009 03:00 PM PST There are a great deal of things that charge or need to be powered through a USB port. Sometimes you’d rather not be stuck next to your computer when that item needs charged. Well now there’s an outlet that allows for you to charge your USB gadgets away from your computer. Thankfully, it’s not just a silly concept design and it’s a pretty affordable fix. The TruePower power outlet solution has two USB ports as well as two standard three prong power outlets. The USB port won’t draw any power unless something is actually connected to the port in order to make it so that the port doesn’t become a vampire port. Right now there isn’t anything on how to install it, but they’re working on getting an installation video posted. The device won’t be out until early in 2010, right now it’s still waiting on the final UL Approval. You can pre-order one now for $9.95. SteelSeries Limited Edition series for Sudden Attack game Posted: 04 Dec 2009 11:30 AM PST If you’re into gaming even remotely, then you’ve probably not only heard of SteelSeries, but actually drooled over a few of their devices just a little bit. It’s alright, you can admit it here. Well for this Christmas season SteelSeries has announced that they’ll be releasing a limited edition version of the Ikari laser gaming mouse as well as the QcK mouse pad. Alright, so a mouse pad isn’t exactly something to get overly excited over. However, it’s always nice to manage to get your hands on a limited edition set. It wasn’t actually released for the Christmas season, but actually to celebrate the Sudden Attack video game. The mouse pad features artwork from the game. The mouse is going for $79.99 and the mouse pad for a much cheaper $11.99. Beer Chiller gives cold beer in 90 seconds Posted: 04 Dec 2009 10:27 AM PST It’s Friday yet again and for those that are still stuck at work, you’re probably dreaming of when you finally get to go home. If in that daydream there’s a nice cold beer waiting for you, you’ll like this contraption. Instead of jamming your beer in the freezer and risking leaving it in too long, you can have a device that safely makes it cold in no time at all. This miniature cooler puts your beer on ice and gets it cold in 90 seconds. Sure, that does mean you still have to wait, but it’s better than a few minutes. Plus there isn’t any risk of getting a much too frozen beer out of the mix, like you would have to worry about if it were to sit in the freezer. Of course if you’re outside of Japan this could be hard to get your hands on. It’s for sale at Rinkya Stores for 1,385 yen with a $9 commission fee. Walkie Talkie WatchesThe first thing we thought was "a walkie talkie in a watch? That'll be poo! It will have no range, eat batteries, have no functions and be seriously fiddly/difficult to use". The Oticon ConnectLine system will boast a ConnectLine TV Adaptor and ConnectLine Phone Adaptor, where it will work via the similar wireless connectivity route used by the popular Dual, Epoq and Vigo Connect hearing instruments, working in tandem with a host of other devices including cellphones, music players and PCs by streaming audio from TVs as well as landline phones straight to a wearer’s hearing aids. This will definitely make life easier for such a people group, and it does open up new possibilities where Christmas presents are concerned. The ConnectLine TV Adaptor is rather small and unobtrusive, measuring 2.5″x 2.5″ x 1″ in size, where it will hook up to the audio output of any TV. It also boasts a working range of up to 30 feet while being powered by its own power supply. Those who use the ConnectLine system will be able to enjoy high quality audio streaming via their hearing instruments, allowing them to listen at their own preferred volume without experiencing the delay that is normally associated with off-the-shelf transmitters. As for the ConnectLine Phone Adaptor, it will transform any landline phone into a cordless Bluetooth phone – making it a perfect welcome gift for the older folks who want to maintain their current landline phone. Posted: 04 Dec 2009 04:00 AM PST There is nothing quite like getting a brand new gizmo to play around with, but more often than not we are sometimes confronted with unforseen circumstances that do a number on our new purchase, including a lightning strike during a vicious storm that knocks out our favorite gizmo. Sha-Poopie, endorsed by the Monk family Posted: 03 Dec 2009 06:19 PM PST I was watching an episode of Monk the other day, and he was on a case where detective Adrian Monk had to adopt a dog. His assistant Natalie bought him a Sha-poopie to clean up after the pooch. If you’ve ever watched the show, then you know how germ-phobic Monk is. I would imagine that for him to clean up dog leavings would be the ultimate torture. The Sha-Poopie is a device that allows the user to get under the dog’s…tail as they are…bowel moving, and catch the crap before it becomes against the law. Inventor Dan Shalhoub was inspired by the fact that he owns a dog, and he hated bending over to pick up the mess. He has a bad back, and noticed that most products that clean up after the dog are rather “after the fact”. He invented the Sha-Poopie as “preemptive, catch it in the act product”. You may have also seen the Sha-Poopie on a television show called American Inventor that aired a few years ago. Dan Shalhoub did not win, but the judges noticed the odd resemblance between him and the aforementioned Adrian Monk (Tony Shalhoub). There is a good reason for that. Dan and Tony are brothers. So I guess what we saw on that one Monk episode was a subliminal plug for the Sha-Poopie. Cute, Shalhoub boys, really cute. You should be able to get the Sha-Poopie from the official site for about $24.95. Tech Cult – We cover the latest tech news, but always with a funny twist. FriiBoard puts more motion on the Wii Balance Board Posted: 03 Dec 2009 05:49 PM PST I always like playing the balancing games on the WiiFit balance board, and I look forward to trying out the Shaun White Snowboarding one soon. For those who want another version of Shaun White on the Wii Balance Board should try the Friiboard. The slogan is “set yourself free”, and I can see why. The Friiboard is an attachment for the Wii Balance Board that is placed underneath it. I’m not certain how it attaches, but it had better be well in place for what it is supposed to do. After all, Shaun White and other games that use the Wii Balance Board allow you to lean to steer. Now, that is a level of realism that most games do not have, but the FriiBoard allows you to really feel it. Like if you lean one way, you will actually tip. That won’t happen on the Wii Balance Board unless you lean too far and fall over. You can purchase the FriiBoard on the SWiit Game Gear site for about $45. Yes, that is a lot to pay for a piece of plastic. Maybe it would be cheaper to get that Tony Hawk Guide. While you over at SWiit site, you might want to check out the SWiing Stick to improve your Wii Golfing game. Tech Cult – We cover the latest tech news, but always with a funny twist. LifeHand brings prosthesis to a whole new level Posted: 03 Dec 2009 05:15 PM PST The idea of cyborgs is sort of a science fiction staple. From the Six Million Dollar Man to the Teen Titans’ Cyborg, the idea of a half-man, half-robot has fascinated us for years. Even Luke Skywalker had that artificial hand. It would appear that science fiction has become science fact as a neurologist Paalo Maria Rossini has created the LifeHand. This LifeHand allows the wearer to control the robotic hand on thought processes alone. Unfortunately, none of my sources have a video of this. That is a real shame, because this is something that I would really have to see to believe. The LifeHand has been put on Pierpaolo Petruzziello, an amputee who says that he can do complex movements by thought alone. The LifeHand is connected to the user via electrodes, and it is a project that is five years in the making, with three million dollars in funding from the European Union. Yes, this is clearly only the beginning of this new wave of prosthesis that involves electrodes to the brain in order to simulate complex body movements. I suppose that this would be a good time to make Terminator and Cylon jokes, but I don’t think it is at all appropriate. If I lost an arm and could gain a robotic one with complete control, then I would feel pretty grateful. Cool Gift Idea: Digital Picture Frames, check out our reviews.
