Vizio Tablet ready to rock and roll

Posted: 23 Jun 2011 10:46 AM PDT

Vizio, the company that brought you extremely affordable LCD TVs that do not skimp on quality and performance has now announced that they will be dipping their toes into the competitive tablet market in the form of the aptly named Vizio Tablet, which incidentally will also be the first in the Vizio Internet Apps Plus (“V.I.A. Plus”) ecosystem. This next generation of Vizio Internet Apps will usher about a unified, sophisticated and intuitive user experience over a wide range of consumer electronics devices, where among them include Vizio HDTVs, Blu-ray players, tablets, and smartphones amongst others.

Let us look at the Vizio VTAB1008 tablet in greater detail – it will sport an 8″ display which is by far and large different from most of the other tablets on the market, as those tend to be in the 7″ range or 10″ size, depending on the manufacturer. 8″ is certainly a bold move to take since hardly any other manufacturers go in that direction – at least you get to stand out from the rest of the crowd with this.

Sporting a 1GHz processor underneath the hood, you will find the 8″ high-resolution 1024 x 768 resolution capacitive touch screen display large enough for everyday use without it being cumbersome. With built-in GPS and both 802.11n Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity, you ought to be able to keep pace with plenty of gadgets in different situations without missing a beat, and the extended battery is said to be able to last up to 10 hours (usage dependent, of course) – which ain’t too shabby when you think about it, comparing it to other tablets in the market.

2GB of internal memory might not sound like much, but good thing you can expand that thanks to a microSD memory card slot – up to 32GB, in fact. HD video playback is also not a problem courtesy of its micro HDMI output, while the front-facing camera makes it the perfect device for video chats no matter where you are. No idea on pricing just yet, but we do hope to get further word on it in due time.

Magellan has Back-Up Camera for RoadMate GPS units

Posted: 23 Jun 2011 10:32 AM PDT

When it comes to backing up your vehicle, not everyone finds it as easy as you do – or perhaps, you might even fall into the category of preferring to parallel park instead of backing up vertically! Well, fret not – there are devices out there in the market that will help you out of this particular dilemma, including a back up camera, but what happens when a GPS company like Magellan rolls out their Back-Up Camera companion device? This will play nice with the RoadMate safety series of car navigation units, letting you reverse and park more safely.

Working in tandem with this camera would be a Safety Series GPS navigator that will expand Magellan’s focus on safety and security the entire time you are seated within your vehicle. It will kick off whenever the Back-Up Camera kicks into high gear, helping you reverse out safely from your driveway, and will continue working throughout your entire commute with premium GPS navigation features. The time it clocks out? When you park your car without causing any damage to property around you, followed by shutting off the ignition.

The Magellan Wireless Back-Up Camera will be attached to the vehicle’s rear license plate, where it will transmit images directly to the generous 7″ high resolution screen of a RoadMate 1700 or RoadMate 9055 GPS device. Whenever you engage the reverse gear, the GPS navigator will automatically switch from map to rear-view mode, letting you see just what is below the rear window.

Being both dustproof and waterproof to IP67 standards, the accompanying wide-angle viewing lens will deliver a 120-degree viewing area right behind the vehicle. Its transmitter that is located within the car’s trunk is also water resistant (to IPX4 standard). Boasting a 45-foot range and a 45 degree camera vertical adjustment, the transmitter ought to be able to play nice with just about any vehicle, SUVs and RVs.

The Magellan Wireless Back-Up Camera kit will retail for $149.99 if you’re interested.

LED Bulb Screw Fit with Remote Control

Posted: 23 Jun 2011 10:12 AM PDT

How many engineers does it take to screw on a light bulb? Well, we guess that depends on how complex the light bulb itself is, as well as the technical proficiency of the engineers themselves. One thing’s for sure though – it doesn’t take an engineer to figure out how to install the £29.99 LED Bulb Screw Fit with Remote Control, and to make things all the more interesting, you will be able to change the lighting in an instant thanks to an accompanying remote control that works within a 10 meter range. Basically, this LED Bulb functions like any other light bulb save for the ability for you to control it with a quartet of lighting effects and 16 colors to add some zest to your living room.

Ice Beer Mug

Posted: 23 Jun 2011 10:01 AM PDT

Do you love taking things literally? That’s what happens when you get Strapya World to roll out the Ice Beer Mug, where you will use (normally water, otherwise using beer or other liquor is going to be a waste of good money) water to freeze into the form of mug. Once that is done, just pour your poison of choice inside, and you will be able to literally enjoy ice cold beer/liquor.

Well, if you don’t drink any alcohol, you can always dispense some juice or tea into the mug for an instantly refreshing and chilling experience. As the mug itself is a carefully crafted ice cube, you need not worry about purchasing more ice. The only caveat? This is one mug that will melt away after a while, taking around 10 minutes to do so – so you had better finish up your drink there and then – even more so when it is summer and you’re outdoors!

Maggie Pro 3-inch LCD Magnifier

Posted: 23 Jun 2011 03:06 AM PDT

I suppose that this next product is targeted at the elderly, or anyone else whose sight is depleting.

The Maggie is a handheld electronic magnifier that can magnify print or digital content up to 4x, 6x, 8x, and 11x. It is small enough to fit in a pocket with a 3-inch LCD screen, and there is a brightness control for varying lighting conditions for indoors and out.

Maggie is powered by a lithium-ion battery which can be charged via USB or wall-socket charger for about 3.5 hours of use.

Here’s the good news: I got to try out the Maggie-Pro 3, and I found that it worked well to magnify whatever print that I put in front of it. It was simple to use, and I would imagine that your grandparents wouldn’t have a problem with it if they remembered to charge it.

Okay, now here is the bad news. After looking at the functions of the Maggie, I couldn’t help but wonder if “there’s an App for that”. I checked the Android Market, and I found IDEAL Magnifier for Free, and it pretty much did the same thing.

That’s bad because the Maggie-Pro 3-inch LCD Magnifier costs about $215.00 on the X-treme Geek site. Yes, that is pretty up there, but I will have to say that Maggie is much clearer than an App. If you are truly vision-impaired, I would highly suggest trying both of them out and “seeing” what works best.

This Little Mermaid can explore your intestinal tract

Posted: 23 Jun 2011 02:21 AM PDT

What you are seeing here is the Mermaid. Yes, it is a little one, but not the one from the Hans Christian Anderson fairy tale.

No, this one is an endoscopy device designed by a team of researchers from Ryukoku University and the Osaka Medical Collage, both in Japan. This two-inch long, half-inch in diameter device can be programmed to take photographs of the stomach or colon.

It can be controlled by a joystick, and can snap two photos per second. I would imagine that doctors can figure out what your digestive pain is. Just don’t ask how you get it inside of you. Let’s just say that if the doctor gives you a choice, then swallow it.

You know what this reminds me of? Fantastic Voyage, an adaptation of a classic science fiction novel by Isaac Asimov. That, or comparable eighties film with Dennis Quaid and Martin Short known as InnerSpace. In both films, a submarine-like vehicle was shrank to microscopic size and then placed inside someone. I saw an episode of Phineas and Ferb which explored this idea yet again.

Hey, if you don’t have a shrinking machine, then you might as well do the same thing by remote control.

In the future, there could be moving train stations

Posted: 23 Jun 2011 01:57 AM PDT

If there is one thing that can make trains more efficient, it is less stops. Unfortunately, people have to get on and off the train, but what if the stations themselves were moving, and all the train would have to do is slow down in order to board and unboard?

You can watch a video of how it would work after the jump. It is computer-generated, but I would imagine that you could probably construct an equally good presentation if you have a model railroad.

Just make a circular or oval set of tracks that is next to a longer track. The train on the smaller length of track passes the one on the longer one, which doesn’t stop for boarding. Here’s the tricky part: somehow, the doors of the two trains lock together and the people get on and off.

Granted, there would be a limited amount of time for the passenger exchange. I would imagine that if you missed your stop, you could always catch the next one, but you would have to catch a train going in the other direction. Think of it like missing a freeway exit.

I suppose that if we have a train system that encompasses the world, like the type seen in the film 2046, this is the most efficient system of getting on and off of it.
