Victorinox Slim and Slim Duo

Posted: 04 Aug 2011 11:44 AM PDT

Victorinox Swiss Army (VSA) has created a lot of USB Flash Memory devices (not to mention cutlery), and they recently have released the Slim and Slim Duo. Both of them have a USB plug that retracts like the famous Swiss Army knife, and the Duo is the one with two USB plug-ins.

The Slim and Slim Duo are both waterproof and shock-resistant, and is also TSA-approved. Not only are they hard on the outside, but they have “iron-clad protection” with many layers of data encryption as well as password protection.

The Slim and Slim Duo are available at many shops like the Swiss Knife Shop, Amazon, B&H, and Datavision. They come in many colors like silver, blue, orange, pink, and green. They have a range of storage needs as the Slim is available in 4GB, 8GB, 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB. The Slim Duo is available in 128GB. The price begins at $39.99 for the 4GB Slim, and $349.99 for the 128GB Slim Duo.

Yeah, that is pretty high for the Slim Duo, but for students going back-to-school, it can be a worthwhile investment. It is good for 25,600 songs (14.6 years of uninterrupted music), 25,000 pictures taken with a 20 Megapixel camera (50,000 with a 10 Megapixel camera), 18 full videos in HD format, and 32 Britannica encyclopedias.

RedMere’s HDMI cables, and why you should get one

Posted: 04 Aug 2011 11:00 AM PDT

We have reported on RedMere’s cables back at CTIA Fall 2010. These HDMI cables have a miniature IC in the cable connector to boost their strength, and they are ultra-thin. You can see in the image how skinny they are compared to a regular HDMI cable. I’ll leave you to decide which is which is the RedMere.

RedMere makes these HDMI cables under several different names. When you click under Where to Buy on RedMere’s home page, they have a list of many names and retail outlets.

We live in an era where anyone with a smartphone should have an HDMI cable to connect with their smartphone, camera, or portable gaming system in order to get a bigger image on our large-screen televisions. I’ve tried out HDMI cables on my Droid X before, and I could never get mine to work. I did a little research and discovered that my phone will only do video and pictures when an HDMI cable is connected to the screen. Some smartphone do the whole HDMI out thing, but some do not. Perhaps you have had a similar experience.

For this reason, I recommend that everyone get an HDMI cable. I’m sure that I don’t even have to explain this, as hopefully you already have. If you haven’t, then I would suggest finding yourself a RedMere HDMI. You can find out more about them here.

Ninjapins leave less evidence of your pushpins

Posted: 04 Aug 2011 10:18 AM PDT

When I first went to college, I was told not to use pushpins on the dorm room wall, because of the hole that they leave behind.

Now there is the ninjapins, which are designed to leave less of a mark. They would have to be, since they are named after the assassins who kill in secret. I wonder what the AskANinja ninja feels about them.

The ninjapin does not have a round point to it, but rather an “L” shaped slit. As you can see, it leaves less of a mark then your regular pushpin.

Granted, it is still a hole, but one that will not get noticed by your landlord. I suppose that it even ninjas can’t strike a blow without leaving some evidence.

Traditionally, if you have a pinhole in your wall, most people try and hide it with toothpaste. I never tried this method back when I lived in my college dorm, but it apparently works. Leave a comment if you can testify that this method is good.

You should be able to purchase a 5-piece set from AssistOn for about $5. That’s $1 per pin, and they don’t have the shape necessary for pull-outs like regular pushpins. I’ll let you decide whether or not this is a good investment. It all depends on what your landlord charges for damages.

Nokero solar powered phone charger

Posted: 04 Aug 2011 06:00 AM PDT

Many of us go to bed at night with our smartphones hooked up to a charger, making sure that we would be more than ready for the next day’s gruelling office run, where you have phone calls to make, text messages to send, emails to reply to, and even checking in your Foursquare account to make sure that you have not lost Mayor status at your favorite coffee haunt. That sounds like the norm for plenty of folks, but wait a moment and spare a thought for those who live in less developed countries, where getting an iPhone 4 is practically out of the question.

Those folks will have to settle for feature phones with monochrome screens instead, and forget about 3G or Wi-Fi connectivity. Heck, chances are pretty good they won’t even have access to electricity in their own homes – up to 500 million of them, according to a Hong Kong and Denver-based company who is currently trying to push their solar-power charging panels which targets those who live in off-grid, often impoverished regions of the world.

Nokero International’s offerings come in two versions – the 1-watt P101 and the 2-watt P102. They both do not have any battery within, but will instead rely on the sun’s light to directly juice up a connected device. The 1-watt P101 is capable of charging a typical cell phone in a mere three hours, while if you opt for the more powerful 2-watt P102, that gets the job done in just half the amount of time.

These pocket-sized panels will be USB compatible and ship with relevant phone adapters, although you are out of luck if you want to juice up your smartphone. These are clearly meant for feature phones only, so take note f that. This is where Nokero intends to separate itself from the rest of the pack, catering to entry-level devices instead. Just how much do you think you need to pay for such green convenience? The P101 will retail for $29, while the more powerful P102 is nearly double the price at $49.

Wall Projection Scale

Posted: 04 Aug 2011 05:30 AM PDT

Weighing yourself can be quite the tricky affair, especially when you’re halfway through or just starting off with the battle against the bulge. Yes sir, all those pounds you gained over the Christmas holidays from last year and New Year’s resolutions that you never really lived up to, have returned with a vengeance. Stepping on top of a scale is a tag team affair – after all, you cannot see what is being displayed as your tummy has already covered the readout.

The Wall Projection Scale solves that particularly tricky situation thanks to a projection lens that will project your weight reading onto a wall, anywhere from 2″ to 6″ in height, depending on what you’re comfortable with. All figures displayed will be in easy-to-read red numerals, and you can keep track of your exact weight as long as they are in 0.1 kg increments.

If you have a trim tummy, then you can always view your current weight in the 2″ long LCD display, and as long as you do not go past the 250kg mark, the Wall Projection Scale ought to be a good servant. The projection is made possible thanks to a trio of AA batteries for this $69.95 purchase.

The only thing constant about life would be change – and that again, we have a sense of impermanence for everything. Nothing lasts forever after all, not even diamonds, although those can be handed down to your descendants to the 10th generation if you’re careful enough. The Water Wizard Buddha Board for Kids from ThinkGeek is the perfect purchase to deliver a lesson on impermanence. You will take the water wand and paint on the canvas with it. Best to take a photo of your masterpiece, since it will fade away slowly after that.

This $19.99 purchase is one environmentally friendly toy which ought to last for years – so it would be best to have a few kids in quick succession if you want to maximize your purchase’s value. Water is stored in the Water Wand’s handle, so no mess is created. Run out of water? The answer is simple, just fill it up and you’re good to go.

Huawei looks into the future with Huawei Vision

Posted: 03 Aug 2011 11:55 PM PDT

It isn’t like Huawei to lead the way when it comes to the latest and greatest smartphone, and certainly their upcoming release, the Huawei Vision, isn’t going to be the standard bearer for this niche market. What it offers, however, is mid-range functionality for an Android-powered smartphone, and at the very least Huawei has the smarts to roll it out with Android 2.3 Gingerbread – which means you need not drum your fingers on the table and wonder just when will they release an update if you were to be on Froyo instead.

The Huawei Vision lives up to its name by being a visually striking smartphone, sporting a new 3D user interface that might seem to be rather gimmicky to some at first glance, in addition to a carousel animation display. There is the
1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon MSM 8255 processor running underneath the hood, crammed into an aluminum alloy unibody that will come in rose gold, silver or charcoal shades, alongside a curved touch design. What are some of the other hardware packed within? Just check out the rest of the story after the jump and you’re good to go.

The Huawei Vision will be super slim at 9.9mm at its thinnest point, tipping the scales at just 121 grams. It has a 5-megapixel camera which boasts of autofocus and HD video recording capabilities, augmented by an LED flash to help you out in those low light conditions. Want to remain connected to the Internet? No problem, just connect via its Wi-Fi N connectivity, and you can always take the hands-free route when driving with its Bluetooth V2.1 with A2DP support.

The Huawei Vision’s 3D phone interface will also be something fresh to most people, letting you select any panel of the home screen with but a solitary swipe, making it a snap to prioritize the application view to suit your needs. Nice to know that come this September when the Huawei Vision rolls out, it will have games pre-loaded to get you started right out of the box with Angry Birds, Asphalt 6: Adrenaline, Order & Chaos Online and Guerrilla Bob HD. No idea on pricing though.
