1/2 Mile Driveway Alarm

Posted: 23 Mar 2011 05:23 PM PDT

For those who are extremely used to having the path of life open up for you way in advance, as other people do all the groundwork while you stroll into the limelight, then we might think the 1/2 Mile Driveway Alarm is a most suitable gadget for your home. After all, this alarm system will alert you whenever there is a vehicle coming up the driveway – from a whopping half mile away. How is this possible?

Definitely no magic is involved, but you will have a remote motion sensor attached to a mailbox post or address sign that is located at the end of your drive, where it can detect the movement of vehicles which pass up to 50′ away. Having said that, it will send a wireless signal back to the monitor in a home, which makes it perfect for homes that have long driveways.

The monitor itself will generate a tone to alert you that someone is coming to your doorstep, and it can support up to a quartet of sensors for homes that have multiple entrances, where each sensor emits a different tone so you can “hear” which entrance to look at without missing a beat. The 1/2 Mile Driveway Alarm can be yours for $179.95, although we’re not sure whether false alarms are more of the norm than rarity in this case.

LG Wireless Charging Pad

Posted: 23 Mar 2011 05:08 PM PDT

Going wireless and paperless – that has been the dream of many since time immemorial. OK, so perhaps I have stretched the truth by quite a mile, since that dream has not resulted in a full paperless society just yet, and take a peek behind your computer and you will not find any cable-free environment. Of course, there have been some remarkable advancements when it comes to wireless connectivity in the last decade, what with RF as well as Bluetooth being mature in their own right, not to mention the Qi wireless charging pad and Palm’s very own Touchstone Charger technology.

LG has decided to jump aboard the wireless charging bandwagon this time around as well, with what they call the LG Wireless Charging Pad. Also known as the WCP-700 if model numbers are your cup of tea, this particular device will feature a sleek and sharp design, where it intends to revolutionize wireless charging compared to what we know at the moment.

There will be inductive that are integrated coils into the battery doors and internal contacts, letting such advanced wireless charging technology paving the way for a cord-free power source in order to do away with the need for external connections which tend to limit the phone’s usability. Touted to provide industry leading wireless charging and ergonomics, it comes with audible and tactile feedback whenever you place a phone on the pad.

Visually, you can keep track of how much your handset has already been juiced thanks to multi-colored LED lights that are on the LG Wireless Charging Pad itself. Its compact, sleek design also makes it easy to tote around, especially if you’re one who travels a whole lot. Boasting an effective range of 7mm from center of placement, it should be pretty much on everyone’s wish list when it arrives early next month. Sounds too good to be true? We can guarantee you that this isn’t an April Fool’s joke, otherwise it would be a very expensive one at $69.99 a pop.

MacBook Air lock is now available

Posted: 23 Mar 2011 05:00 PM PDT

How many of you spend plenty of time at cafes and public places, sippin’ on a latte while surfing the Internet for the latest news thanks to a Wi-Fi hotspot? Of course, if you’re out with a group of friends, it is easy to just head off to the loo without worrying that someone will nick away your laptop – but if you happen to fly solo, the possibility is very real, especially when you’re a tourist in an unfamiliar area.

There is a very good reason for the existence of laptop locks, and for the world’s thinnest laptop, the MacBook Air from Apple, at long last someone has decided to do something about it by rolling out a lock for that particular make. We shall take a look at how it works in closer detail in the extended post.

Apple’s MacBook Air lacks a security slot in case you didn’t notice, so you might think that there is virtually no way to prevent theft from happening. Good thing the people over at MacLocks are ingenious enough to come up with what they dub the MacBook Air Lock, making it the one and only MacBook Air Lock and Security Bundle in the market. Trust them, they know what they’re doing – after all, didn’t they churn out the best selling iPad Lock?

If you had to get just one MacBook Air accessory, better make sure this is at the top of your list instead of some fancy Hello Kitty cover. After all, would you rather settle for a lost MacBook Air, or one that has a little scratch on the side that nobody notices? As for the $74.95 MacBook Air Lock, it is also one of the best security solution around for retailers, since it does not leave any residue like stickers, making sure it remains fixed to the table all the time.

It works by incorporating a neat cover that also protects your MacBook Air courtesy of an integrated built-in security slot which is able to accommodate any of the standard cable locks that are currently sold on the market. Pretty ingenious, don’t you think so?

PocketLoops Portable Music Creation Studio for iPhone and iPod Touch

Posted: 23 Mar 2011 08:30 AM PDT

While I was at ShowStoppers at CTIA Spring 2011, I saw this guy from Gear4. This is PocketLoops, a Portable Music Creation Studio designed for the iPhone and iPod Touch.

It is essentially a keyboard with 13 keys with a 30 pin dock that can do instruments like synthesizers, organs, and pianos. As you can see, it turns the iPhone/iPod Touch into a touchscreen controller for all kinds of effects.

With a little work, the user can mix and records his or her own tracks, and the user can record his or her backing track. There are also three built-in effects that include Echo, Chorus, and the XY Filter Pad.

PocketLoops allows the user to record loops for music. The user can also create beats with a drum kit and groove that includes House, Drum & Bass, Hip Hop, Rock, and Reggae.

There is an App that allows the user to send best tracks to and share it with friends via e-mail. This App is free, but the PocketLoops will cost about $69 when it is released sometime in May.

You know, I have a suggestion about how to improve the Pocket Loops. If the dock were in the upper center portion of the keyboard instead of the side, it could possibly accommodate an iPad.

The Tunebug Rumble

Posted: 23 Mar 2011 08:15 AM PDT

We have reported on the Tunebug Vibe before, with its unique ability to turn any flat surface into a speaker. I first encountered the device at CES a few years ago, and was pretty impressed with its primary feature, and Tunebug has a new speaker with the Tunebug Rumble that I have seen at CTIA Spring 2011 Showstoppers.

The Rumble is an ultra portable sound transporter that can be Bluetooth connected to any Mobile device, turning any surface into a speaker.

The Rumble comes with the TunePad with an integrated microphone, so it is able to work as a conference calling device as well as a speaker. It has touch sensitive on and off and volume up and down controls. The user can initiate calls using Voice Command Control (VCC). If he or she is listening to music or sound file, and there is a call, the audio will automatically pause until the call is finished.

I believe that it is one of those 3-in-1 devices that is a speaker phone, desktop speaker, and, with a proper strap, it is a helmet speaker as well. The Rumble is charged via USB to 3.5 mm charging cable, and is ultra portable and light weight. I don’t seem to have a release date or a price on this guy.

I have seen the future, and it’s a flippin’ glowing box of Honey Nut Cheerios

Posted: 23 Mar 2011 07:40 AM PDT

This is why I go to conferences like CTIA Spring 2011. You never know when you are going to see a flippin’ glowing box of Honey Nut Cheerios.

I realize that this photo here only does it some justice, but each area of the box glows in succession. The logo glows, then the Honeynut bee, then the cereal. It’s like a neon sign on Times Square.

How is this miracle done? Through the miracle of Qi. We have talked about it before Energizer’s Inductive Charger, and what you are seeing here is a box put on a powered platform so it will glow.

This technology was brought about thanks to Fulton Innovation, and it is definitely impressive. I spoke to a lady at the booth who said that “it’s like Minority Report”. She’s referring to a scene where Tom Cruise eats out of a cereal box that has this animated jingle playing out on the box.

In case you are wondering, there is cereal in the box, and this technology is not as expensive as you might think. According to the representative that I spoke to, the trick involves special ink, which can be done “for pennies”.

I don’t know about you, but I’m not certain if I’m looking forward to a future where all the packages at a retail store are glowing. Someone really wants to see a future where the aisles of a supermarket are like the neon lights of Broadway.

Spice Popcorn Projector M-9000 phone

Posted: 23 Mar 2011 05:00 AM PDT

Spice has come up with a new kind of phone – one that is capable of projecting images from it to a flat surface elsewhere, freeing you of the task to tote around another projector in the process. We would say that inventions like this are more novel than practical, since it is going to do a number on your battery life, and you can’t really project anything that is high resolution due to hardware limitations. Still, let us not sideline the Popcorn Projector M-9000 phone since this is one of their initial efforts, so all encouragement should be given.

We do know that this handset is capable of displaying large images from a short distance, and throwing images isn’t the only thing which it is capable of. The handset will also come with various features including an FM radio, a TV antenna for your mobile TV needs (subject to area and reception, we presume), and a document viewer – enough to peruse through some work documents, but definitely unable to modify that Word doc or Excel spreadsheet.

The phone will also come equipped with a 2.4" QVGA display and a 3.2-megapixel digital camera, where you can view streaming content or display content that is saved on a T-flash memory card. The card slot itself is able to handle capacities of up to 16GB, and it does seem as though the phone will arrive in India first for RS 6999 (that is roughly $155 in American dollars) with no mention of a Stateside rollout.
