On an episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm, Larry David is excited about his new gadget, until he can’t get it out of its clamshell plastic. He eventually ends up swearing and stabbing the packaging with a knife. This packaging might deter theft and keep the materials inside safe, but it often does its job too well. Not only that, it requires a lot of plastic to do so, which is bad for the environment. Both Wal-Mart and the Home Deport have recently pledged to cut down on wasteful packaging, and the clamshell was high on the list of packaging types to eliminate. The cost of plastic packaging has shot up since the rise of oil prices, and lighter and more environmentally-friendly packaging is being developed. The lighter the packaging, the cheaper it will cost to ship it. In short, eliminating the clamshell is good for just about everybody. So why not join the fight. However, the space shuttle is not like a typical moving van, so whatever house you will want to bring would have to be small. Fortunately, a team of engineers at North Carolina State University have come up with a plan of a lightweight tent-like structure. The collapsible structure is made from Demron, a polyurethane substrate that is resistant to both heat and radiation. It will reflect UV rays off its dome shape, and even repel incoming meteorites. As for power, it will use a Sabatier reactor for water, fuel, and oxygen, which is made from a nickel nanoparticle coated fiber material that can reduce the weight. As you can surely see by the image here, this is a concept, but I believe that these engineers actually want to pitch their lightweight structure as part of the NASA RASCAL competition. I would like to see what this would look like on Earth, and would also see how long it takes to set up. Could a group of astronauts on the moon’s gravity do it? With less time and people? Wappy Dog is from video games industry giant Activision, and the toy that you see in the picture is designed to wirelessly work in sync with a 3DS game. The Wappy Dog toy has light up cheeks that can express Wappy’s different mood states from unhappy to fully content via different colors. As you might have guessed, the object is to make certain Wappy is a happy puppy, and to keep its cheeks the color of contentment. The player/user can talk to Wappy as it recognizes more than 18 different voice prompts, and it can respond with more than 350 barks that are “translated” with the 3DS. Wappy also has another interesting feature that allows you play with the toy version while you are away. Whatever you did on the 3DS will be synced in with the Wappy toy when you arrive home. Wappy should be available sometime around Christmas, but I am wondering why he is called Wappy. After all, when I think of a “Wappy Dog”, I think of my mother-in-law’s Great Dane. I tell you, when that dog gets happy, its tail gets “whappy” as a small yet painful whip. I hope this toy robot dog can’t wag its tail like that. First of all, this £499.99 device looks great as a portable sound system in this day and age, where it will pay homage to ghetto blasters of the 1980s. Of course, expect top notch technology crammed inside, where you will be able to enjoy touch-sensitive controls as well as hook up a wide range of devices to it thanks to multiple audio inputs. A 6″ subwoofer does a pretty bang up job of delivering bass, while the cassette deck is no longer there to keep up with the times. There are also two 6-inch drivers located on either side of it, and you can even blend inputs together if you want to let that creative music beast inside of you loose. If you are not familiar with clamshell packaging, it is what you see on that package of three pilers on the image to your left. I’m sure you can’t stand opening this plastic coated nightmare, as it never opens easily. 
The space shuttle program might be ending, but that doesn’t mean that we can’t be thinking about living on another world. I’m very certain that one day there will be places to live on the moon and Mars, but unless you want a house made of rocks, you need to bring the building materials yourself. 
I guess that there is nothing that can be done with “pet” games other than linking them with real pets, but until that day, there is Wappy Dog. 
Since summer is already upon those of you living in the Northern Hemisphere, just what the heck are you doing at home, reading online news and staying cooped up all day long?
