Some of you might be looking at this picture of an iPhone balanced precariously in this puddle and be thinking “oh no”. It’s probably because you were using your iPhone near a pool, sink, or toilet, and then accidentally dropped it. In those seconds of helplessness, you knew that your precious iPhone was about to be drowned and possibly rendered useless.

What if you just didn’t have to worry about that? According to HzO’s Waterblock technology, a thin film nano-coating can provide a clear and near invisible layer of protection over the vital electronic circuitry within.

That is right, this company has created a method of a non-detectable WaterBlock to protect mobile devices. You would never know it is there, but it has to be done as the phone is being constructed. In other words, we now have the capacity to make all cellular phones water-resistant, at least in one meter of water. If I was a cellular phone company, I would be looking to HzO to WaterBlock my phone.

Of course, like all new technology, it might take a while to adopt it fully. However, I predict that this Waterblock will be a standard feature on most, if not all, phones. I wonder how many more years it will take.

Cadillac CUE on deck at CES

It’s not unusual for a car company to have a thing or two on display at CES, and Cadillac showed off its new technical system for its automobiles, the CUE.

The CUE (Cadillac User Experience) uses two screens to convey information to the driver. The first that you see in the photo is located between the passenger and driver’s seats, and it is a full touchscreen made to resemble the homescreen of an iPad. I got a chance to try it out for myself, and I found that the audio allows for over 64 station presets, and you can even have a music artist or album as one of these presets.

Another feature is the driver display, which is where the normal static indicators of a regular car are seen. The CUE makes the driver’s display fully customizable, so if the driver wants to see nothing but the Speedometer and the fuel indicator, that can happen. The driver can even put the navigation right in front of them, all with a touch of a button of the steering wheel’s controls. In case you are wondering, there are some things the driver cannot do while the car is in motion, and I would imagine that is to prevent distracted driving.

The only thing that Cadillac couldn’t demonstrate for me was the voice controls. This was because the display was in a room at CES Showstoppers, not in an actual Cadillac. However, Cadillac intends to have three cars out this year with this CUE system in place. Perhaps you can drive it for yourself.

The Neat Company goes to the cloud at CES

Most of you know that I am always looking for some sort of “neat factor” when it comes to the gadgets that I report about.

The Neat Company is something that I just had to write about. As soon as I saw how their NeatDesk can create digital copies of business cards, receipts, and 8 x 11 papers, I had to be a part of that vision. I mean, they have “neat” in their name, for crying out loud!

As you might have guessed, The Neat Company wants to make your desk clearer by removing the paper clutter and turning it into digital records. The Neat Company’s software uses optical character recognition to understand words from your paper files. It will then create a database for your contacts, and even an expense report for your receipts. Nice!

The Neat Company has also added NeatCloud and NeatMobile. NeatCloud provides users with their own customized cloud-based backup and automatically syncs with Neat’s software for “unfettered access to their information”. NeatMobile allows users to use their smartphones for capturing and storing information to their Neat digital filing systems.

If you have some New Year’s resolution to be more organized, then I would highly suggest going with the Neat Company. You should be able to find their products at the Neat website here and other major retail outlets.

Razer Naga Hex gaming mouse

Gaming is serious business, and for those who take their frags and RTS strategies seriously, then surely high-end hardware is the name of the game for such gamers. CES 2012 proved to be a potent platform for Razer to continue with their serpentine collection of gaming peripherals, with the latest one being the Razer Naga Hex gaming mouse. Yes sir, their latest gaming mouse will feature half a dozen thumb buttons that was specially designed for MOBA (Multiplayer Online Battle Arena), action-RPG and hack and slash genres.

The inspiration behind the Naga Hex? Its predecessor of sorts, the award-winning Razer Naga MMO gaming mouse came with a 12-button thumb grid, so the Razer Naga Hex now sports six large thumb buttons that have been optimized for the user interfaces found in action-RPG and MOBA games.

All of the six mechanical buttons can be bound to specific spells, abilities, items, and other invaluable commands in MOBA games such as League of Legends. This alone paves the way for faster and easier actuation, where a mechanical key infrastructure that uses less force to actuate allows you to have the upper hand in terms of speed over your enemies. This results in you being able to strike them before they can react, pretty much in the same way most snakes attack with lightning fast reflexes. Not only that, with Diablo III more or less ready to roll out in due time (not taking as long as Duke Nukem forever, I hope), you can prepare yourself by getting the Razer Naga Hex beforehand since it is perfect for obsessive clicking in hack and slash games.

Special switches are used in the construction of the Razer Naga Hex's buttons, where they are able to withstand up to 250 clicks per minute – if you average that out, it amounts to slightly more than 4 clicks a second. Fret not about hyper-clicking though, as the Razer Naga Hex is said to be good for up to a whopping 10 million clicks – that translates to 40,000 minutes, which leads us to 666 hours if you decide to break it down further – now that is a whole lot of clicks (and a diabolical number to boot), so chances are you would settle for a new mouse long before the Naga Hex bites the proverbial dust.

Nice to know the asking price for the Razer Naga Hex gaming mouse is not that high either at just $79.99, where it will ship from the end of this month onwards.

TOSY Robotics announces mRobo with Justin Bieber making an appearance

Robots, CES 2012, Justin Bieber, it makes no sense, or does it? TOSY Robotics is a leading robotics and high-tech toys manufacturer that hails from Vietnam, but they do know a thing or two about capitalism. After all, what better way to draw attention to a product of yours than to have a worldwide celebrity appear at your booth on the showfloor? This is what TOSY Robotics did to promote their mRobo Ultra Bass, a state-of-the-art portable speaker which also functions as a dancing robot (hello there, Transformers! I see what you did there).

Multi-platinum selling Pop & R&B singing sensation Justin Bieber also made an appearance with the mRobo Ultra Bass yesterday, and if you happen to be at CES this year, you might want to make a beeline for the TOSY Robotics booth at the LVCC South Hall Ground Level.

With 2GB of internal memory to store a fraction of your digital music collection, the battery powered mRobo Ultra Bass will be able to store around 500 songs within. All data or songs are transferred using the built-in USB port, where you can then select the track of your choice thanks to the included remote control. As whether you would want to rock to Justin Bieber or a far more accomplished musician, the integrated speaker will do the job for you, producing bass at 40Hz.

The moment music starts to play, the mRobo, who is capable of listening to its own music, music from other devices, or music streamed via Bluetooth, will start to perform right away, “transforming” just like our favorite robots from the Hasbro franchise do, “growing” a head out of nowhere, with its legs and arms popping up from its previously static configuration. Regardless of the genre of music, the mRobo Ultra Bass will be able to run through a series of pre-programmed dance moves to virtually any genre of music.

According to Ho Vinh Hoang, Founder and CEO, TOSY Robotics JSC, “mRobo is one of the most innovative and interactive entertainment devices ever introduced. It gives music and dance lovers the ability to enjoy their passions in a whole new way. Not only do they have a great new way to listen to their favorite songs but they also have a new partner to dance to their favorite music with. We’re thrilled to be able to unveil mRobo Ultra Bass here at CES 2012 with the help of one of the world’s most recognized stars, Justin Bieber.”

The mRobo tips the scales at approximately 3.3 pounds and measures 4.3″ x 6.3″ x 7.9″, and will stand at under 18″ in height when it is turned into a robot. Expect the mRobo Ultra Bass to retail for $199 a pop when it hits the market this fall – perhaps with a free pre-loaded Justin Bieber album?

Huawei MediaPad ships with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich

Huawei might not be that huge a player in the world of tablets, but that does not mean being small places one at a disadvantaged position. No sir, Huawei has just announced that their MediaPad is one of the first tablets in the world to ship with Google’s Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich operating system right out of the box. Originally sold on the market back in June 2011, the original MediaPad proved to be a world beater by being the first 7″ Android tablet with Android 3.2 Honeycomb, and now the successor to the MediaPad in its latest iteration too, will deliver the most updated Android operating system version.

Apart from that, Huawei also took the opportunity to announce a trio of new colors in the previous MediaPad series, where you will be able to choose from shadow black, classic brown, and passion pink, and all of them will ship with the previous version of Android (Android 3.2 Honeycomb). Regardless of which MediaPad version you decide to pick up, it will still carry a high-quality display of up to 1280 x 800 pixels at 217 PPI, being full well capable of supporting 1080P Full HD video playback. Not only that, it will be powered by a Qualcomm dual-core 1.2GHz processor and boasts a battery life of at least six hours. Current MediaPad owners need not fret, they will be on the receiving end of an OTA Android 4.0 upgrade to their tablets before Q1 2012 is over.
