KlearKase protects Kindle from water

Posted: 11 Jun 2010 03:00 PM PDT

It seems as if every gadget you can possibly purchase has some sort of a case to protect the gadget from water.  Now even Kindle is jumping on that bandwagon.  Instead of taking a book with you to the beach, you can slip this case on your very own Kindle and read what you prefer right on your favorite gadget without having to worry about damaging it.

The polycarbonate case only weighs 6 ounces, which isn’t too shabby.  The case is completely clear, so you’ll get to see all of your Kindle without too much getting in your way.  The case is also pretty affordable for those of you on a tight budget.  Right now it’s priced at $39.99, which is far less than it would cost to replace your Kindle after you manage to get it wet.  Although keep in mind you shouldn’t dunk this under the water completely since it’s just splash proof instead of waterproof.

Oregon Magnetic Weather Hub

Posted: 11 Jun 2010 02:00 PM PDT

I’ve always wanted one of the electronic weather stations, but for some reason I’ve never really gotten around to purchasing one.  In part it’s due to the price and that I can hop on the internet and get a mostly accurate weather forecast.  However, this tiny weather hub might be enough to get me to cave and purchase one.  Especially since the hub can be hung on your fridge thanks to the handy little magnet.

It’s a pretty small fridge magnet, measuring 6.5 by 0.5 by 3.5 inches.  It tells the indoor temperature in either Celsius or Fahrenheit, you can select your preference on the device.  It also shows a 12 to 24 hour weather forecast with a graphical icon.  Sure, it doesn’t show a ton of information, but for $1.49 it tells plenty of information.  You can pick the Oregon Weather Hub up through Amazon.

LED Bulb attempts to replace kerosene lamps

Posted: 11 Jun 2010 01:15 PM PDT

Apparently 1.6 billion people still rely on kerosene lamps to give them light.  Which for those people the kerosene is expensive enough to suck up 5% of the family’s income.  Plus to make it worse the kerosene gives off noxious cancer-causing fumes.  Well Nokero is attempting to help out those dependent on kerosene and is offering an affordable light that relys upon renewable energy to help them save a whole lot of money.

The light has a total of 4 solar panels and 5 LED lights.  Don’t worry, with all of that technology the light still manages to be rain-proof.  It can be hung from the ceiling thanks to the hook on the top.  It is up for purchase and Nokero is working hard to make sure they stay affordable.  Right now these little bulbs cost $15 a piece or $10 a piece if you buy 48.  They are actually attempting to get the price down to $8.

LuminAR robotic lamp designed by MIT student

Posted: 11 Jun 2010 08:30 AM PDT

Most college dormitories come with a standard lamp that is good for…light, really. These lamps are usually cheaply made to give the college student the minimum of what they need.

If you are MIT student Nathan Linder, you turn your lamp into the LuminAR robotic lamp, which does something more than just shine a light.

Linder attached a pico-projector to his lamp, so he could have a way to project information from his computer. You have to watch the video to see this in action, after the jump.

As you can see, he can simply wave his hand and send a window of information to a certain place on a desk and a wall. So if he wanted to see his video on the left side of his desk, he could do so, and he could probably scroll through his Inbox.

You should watch as Nathan Linder talks about how desktops and laptops are “prisons for pixels”. After all, all the information that you want to have can be projected on a wall or desk.

I would like to see something like this on my desk, honestly. Of course, I might want to have two projectors so I can watch a movie and surf the web at the same time.

Mattel’s Loopz is Simon without the big buttons

Posted: 11 Jun 2010 08:15 AM PDT

Some of you might remember Simon, a pattern recognition and repetition from the early 80’s. As I recall, playing it was not simple.

Loopz is a modern day update of this technology, except instead of the big buttons that you have to hit when they glow, you get the modern-day application of lasers.

You can watch the video of it in action, and it is quite over-dramatized. However, it gives you an idea of what it is like.

It reminds me of the Beamz Interactive. I reported on this a few months ago, and it was a way of playing an instrument by passing your hand through laser beams. The Beamz Interactive has six places to cross your hand, and Loopz has about four. I would imagine that you could probably make some sweet music on the Loopz if you tried, though.

I remember making some tunes on Simon, and I never realized how much Simon paved the way for games like Guitar Hero and RockBand. Now we are in the age of Loopz, and this modern version of Simon can actually keep track of performance and remember the best times and scores.

You can pre-order it from Entertainment Earth now for a price of about $37.99.

Pirata Boat Race games uses both PC and iPhone/iPod Touch

Posted: 11 Jun 2010 08:00 AM PDT

This Pirata Boat Race game created by Pirata London. It is a unique gaming experience because it uses an iPhone/iPod Touch in tandem with a PC.

The basic gist of this app/program is to create a boat race in a virtual world, and row the oars using everyone’s favorite Apple device. Think of it as turning an iPhone or iPod Touch into something like a Wiimote.

If you want to play the game, you will need to go to the official site here. Then what you need to do is download the app on your iPhone and iPod Touch. Don’t worry, the App is free.

From there, it is a matter of syncing your PC with the mobile device so you can “row”. You will need to snap a picture of the QR code with the iPhone’s camera, or enter in a unique code with the iPod touch.

From there, you have your own rowing team, and up to ten people can play at any given time, with five people per boat. Granted, you have to all gather around the PC to do it, so think of it as a social activity.

All in all, I am quite impressed with the Pirata Boat Race, and it shows how the iPhone/iPod Touch can be used in conjunction with desktop devices. I look forward to seeing the iPhone used with other devices, such as actual video game consoles themselves.
