Epson PictureMate Show – Digital frame and a printer, all in one Posted: 01 Dec 2010 04:22 PM PST I still remember the days where you would have to wait until your photos were developed, the thrill of the perfect shot, or the disappointment of a whole roll, with no good pictures to speak of. You can guess that I am a big fan of digital, It's wonderful to be aware of what you have, while you are still able to take another shot. However, there is a downside, the pictures are stored online, or on a disc, and seem to get squirreled away, forgotten. Until now. The Epson PictureMate Show is the perfect desktop item that allows you to view your pictures on it's built in digital photo frame, and when the mood strikes you, you can print them out, to have and to hold, or to give to Grandma. This 2 in 1 unit can not only print lab quality photographs in full color, sepia or black and white, but you can edit your photos as well. Crop them, remove red-eye, select sizes and border styles and create a personalized slideshow with 12 different slideshow modes. Print directly from your camera or card, no computer required. It’s perfect for anyone in the family, weighs about five and a half pounds and at less then $200 it makes the perfect gift. Robot is programmed to pick strawberries Posted: 01 Dec 2010 04:03 PM PST This posting should be a warning to anyone who has a career in harvesting fruit. You could be replaced by a robot. This robot has been developed by Japan’s National Agriculture and Food Research Organization, and it has the ability to detect how ripe a strawberry is, and then can cut the stalk without damaging the sweet fruit itself. There is a video of it after the jump so you can see the strawberry-picking robot in action. This robot works using two cameras so it has a 3D image of fruit. It then can detect how ripe the strawberry is by its color, and can pick it from there. The whole process itself takes about 9 seconds. Just to give you an idea about how much time this saves, my Source says that it takes about 500 hours to pick all strawberries in a 1,000 square meter field, but this robot can beat that by 200 hours. I am assuming that these robots would be on some sort of tank treads or all terrain wheels in order to pluck all the strawberries in a square kilometer area. The designers believe that they can possibly build robots that can pick other fruits besides strawberries. It is definitely the future of farming, complete with robot workers. Microsoft’s plan for shape-shifting touchscreens Posted: 01 Dec 2010 03:48 PM PST One of the problems with touchscreens is that they are way too…flat. That, and there is often very little tactile feedback. If I want to type, I want to feel physical keys underneath me. That way, if I hit a “g” instead of an “f” key, I can feel it. I don’t want to have to look at my text to find out that I screwed up. According to my Source, Microsoft filed a patent last year that “details a light-induced shape-memory polymer display screen. In a nutshell, that means a touch screen that has a real texture and tactile feedback to it, making people feel as if they’re touching an actual object”. This screen would be coated with certain polymers that can change and hold their shape, provided different wavelengths of ultraviolet light hit them from below. You will note in the image this particular ripple effect at the touch of a finger, but I am looking forward to the day when the user can take the surface of a Microsoft Surface and shape it as if it were Play-Doh. As it is, I’m not certain how physical shapes such as a keyboard could be made in this shape-shifting touchscreen. I’m going to leave that question to the experts that clearly have the know-how to make something like this, really. XM25 combat weapon deployed to Afghanistan Posted: 01 Dec 2010 03:23 PM PST This is the XM25 weapon system, and it is the first-ever programmable “smart” grenade launcher. It is called “smart” because this shoulder-mounted weapon uses micro-chipped ammunition to fire 25mm air-bursting shells up to 2,300 feet, which is well past the range of most rifles. The XM25 then programs these shells to explode at a precise distance. This allows for neutralizing insurgents behind walls, rocks, trenches, or even inside buildings. According to a recent quote, this “sort of cover has protected people for thousands of years”, and now this smart technology is in the hands of the soldier “for the first time”. This XM25 includes many sights, sensors, and lasers that can read the distance to a target, and assess elements like air pressure, temperature, and ballistics. This data is sent to the microchip embedded ammo of the XM25 before it is launched. This pinpointed firepower is going to be very advantageous in order to reduce civilian casualties in Afghanistan. My source says that the weapon is so advanced technologically, that the average soldier needs very little training. I can’t help but be reminded of the movie Aliens when I see this gun. I guess we are truly living in a science-fiction warfare age. Perhaps that is not a good thing.
