Wildcharger Pad vs. Powermat: The wireless charging pad showdown Posted: 10 Feb 2010 05:44 PM PST Yes, we have covered the Wildcharger Pad and we have covered the Powermat, and I think it is about time for a Face/Off! It would appear that the Powermat is winning as far as basic space. The Wildcharger Pad is an 8 x 6 space capable of holding 2 mobile devices, but the company says that it can hold five. That most be with the Wildcharge PowerDiscs. The Powermat can hold about three mobile gadgets. So I suppose the Wildcharger has the Powermat beat for the number of mobiles. In all honesty, I don’t know a time when I needed to recharge five mobiles at any given time. Now lets look at aesthetics. I like the Powermat’s look with its ebony black exterior, but the Wildcharger looks like a barbeque grill covered in aluminum foil. So far we’re tied. Let’s look at price. Powermat costs about $99, and the Wildcharger pad costs about $49 as is. However, that Powermat kit comes with a power cube and attachments, which you would have have to buy the peripherals for the Wildcharger pad anyway. I’m not certain if the prices would even out. So hey, I’m not going to say which one really “wins” this battle. After all, don’t we usually shun monopolies? Each product can do what it says, and that is what is most important. Opera Mini announced for the iPhone Posted: 10 Feb 2010 05:38 PM PST The iPhone will be getting a brand new browser known as the Opera Mini, adding to the over 140,000 apps in the App Store catalog. This makes for an interesting bit of news since Apple has yet to approve a third-party browser, so it looks like a nice challenge is on both Opera’s and Apple’s hands. If you’re interested in checking out just how well the Opera Mini for iPhone will run, make a beeline for Mobile World Congress (MWC) next week in Barcelona. ATH-AD700 Open-air Dynamic Headphones from Audio-Technica Posted: 10 Feb 2010 05:22 PM PST I got a chance to try out the ATH-AD700 Open-air Dynamic Headphones from Audio-Technica, and I would say that I am impressed. Of course, I am usually easily impressed by any pair of padded headphones. As much as I love the retro-glory of the padded ‘phones, the ATH-AD700 has some interesting features. For example, the lightweight honeycomb aluminum casing, large aperture 53mm drivers with neodymium magnet systems and CCAW voice coils for superior sound reproduction. The velvet ear-fitting pads are also pretty amazing as well. By the way, I could not figure out how to adjust these guys, but that’s because I didn’t have to. These things have some odd tabs that are designed to cradle the head. I was able to shift them from my head to my seven-year-old daughter’s head without any adjusting whatsoever. Other terrific features include an extra long cord, as well as the gold-plated stereo 1/8 inch (3.5mm) connector with 1/4 inch (6.3mm) adapter. You may notice that these headphones have sort of fibrous exterior. I remember when I first took these out of the box, I thought the ear cups were speakers themselves. It was a shame that wasn’t one of the features. If you’re wanting to get one of these guys, head to the Audio-Technica site and get one. You will have to lay down about $249.95, though. McCurdy’s Armor is a hard shield that is easily assembled Posted: 10 Feb 2010 04:53 PM PST I’ve never heard of McCurdy’s Armor before, but it is a private contractor who makes armor that assembles like it was an erector set, a very heavy erector set, I would imagine. The armor can assemble into a 6.5 foot high pillbox formation in about ten minutes, and it requires no tools for assembly. It is probably the safest place to be in Afghanistan and Iraq, as McCurdy’s armor is resistant to bullets, grenades, and even IED (Improvised explosive device) blasts. By the way, McCurdy’s armor is named after a soldier named Ryan McCurdy who died in 2006. This armor has gun ports and steel plated armor. Let’s hope it saves the lives of future soldiers. So far, the Marine Corps has ordered 14 of these units, but I don’t think there are any being used out in the field so far. It costs about $800,000 per unit, which is pretty expensive, true, but I’m sure tanks cost a lot more. It sure beats sandbagging, or concrete, or whatever the military is using to shield soldiers these days. Of course, like that line from Batman Begins, “the government didn’t think a soldier’s life was $300,000 a man”. In other words, there is a limit to how much Defense will pay for defense. Dog-E-Minder helps you keep track of dog’s activities Posted: 10 Feb 2010 03:30 PM PST If you’re worried about keeping track of the care of your pet, this small device is meant to help you make sure your pet is receiving the care it needs. It keeps track of everything from the simplest of tasks to the more complicated like letting you know the last time your pooch received medication. Plus it is durable enough that it’ll be able to live through any conditions your dog might be in. It hangs from your dog’s collar and is completely waterproof. The durable tag is lightweight enough that it won’t weigh your dog down. It will keep track of when your dog was last walked as well as fed. It’d be great for anyone that has several dogs in their home or just want to make sure that the dog-sitter has all of the necessary information. You can purchase one of these for $19.95. Heart-Shaped iPod Speaker Dock Posted: 10 Feb 2010 02:43 PM PST If you’re pushing things until the last minute for this Valentine’s Day here is one more heart-shaped gadget. It’s one of the larger heart-shaped docks out there, so it’s bound to make a lasting impression. I’d make sure that your significant other has a thing for sappy sweet gadgets before spending the money on this dock. If pink is their favorite color though, you’ll have it made with this one. The aluminum speaker comes with a dock connector that works with all iPods and iPhones, including the iPod Nano, Touch and iPhone 3G/3Gs. You can also use the 3.5mm audio line-in cable to hook up your iPod Shuffle, laptop or any other type of MP3 player. It can run on four AAA batteries or a DC charger. It stands 20.5cm by 5cm by 5cm. You can purchase the dock with remote for £24.95 or about $39 through Amazon. Source: Gadgenista Coolest Gadgets UK – For all your UK centric tech and gadget news. Posted: 10 Feb 2010 01:51 PM PST For some unknown reason whenever I go to workout I tend to lose count. Apparently that’s a chronic problem, because someone has actually made a counter to use while you’re doing pushups. Instead of worrying about losing count and having to do more pushups than is actually necessary, this could keep you on track. Plus if you have a workout buddy they also couldn’t fake their way through a set. It’ll not only track the reps but the time it took you to do them. It will also help you keep proper form as well. It’s meant to work great with the other Perfect Pushup accessories. Once the pushup was the most simple workout that needed the least amount of equipment, but now it’s getting a little more complicated. You can purchase the Perfect Pushup Counter for $19.95 through Amazon. Source: GadgetGrid Cool Gift Idea: Digital Picture Frames, check out our reviews. Astro Boy Electronic Action Figure Posted: 09 Feb 2010 08:13 PM PST
Hmmm, this 10″ tall action figure will knock you back by £24.99, but make sure you are prepared to fork out extra dough for batteries as it relies on a trio of LR44 1.5V batteries to get Astro Boy up and running – good thing he isn’t nuclear powered. The Heineken Robot serves you beer Posted: 09 Feb 2010 07:02 PM PST I figured that this next gadget might appeal to the beer guzzling crowd, which I’m assuming is some percentage of our audience. The Heineken Robot, which I am guessing is a lack of a better name, was developed by some experimenters at Middlesex University in the UK. As you can see, it is essentially a beer keg with wheels. I’m pretty certain that the Heineken robot was in an extra on the Sandcrawler from the original Star Wars movie. The R2-beer-you droid is programed to come to anyone who waves their hand. I suppose that is much better than saying: “Hey Bartender” and I’m sure the Heineken Robot has a much better response time. You actually have to wave your hand over it, and its tap will glow. That is the sign for the customer to put their cup underneath, and it fills the cup with lots of suds. I’m not certain how the Heineken Robot knows if the cup is full. Maybe it uses that sensor thing that fast food restaurants use to fill up sodas. Just work at McDonalds for a little while and you will see what I mean. Of course, the Heineken robot is simply a pet project for now, but it would be interesting if some modifications of it could enable it to replace barmaids. Gmail is no longer limited to just its email function, as chat and video chat were nice little additions in the past few years to provide even more options when it comes to communicating from a single browser window. With the social networking craze coming along pretty nicely, communication on the Web has evolved to go beyond email and chat, where sharing photos of your recent holiday escapades have become the norm, not to mention even a night out in a fancy restaurant. Google Buzz adds yet another layer of icing on the cake, where it offers a new way to start conversations about the things you find interesting and share updates, photos, videos and more. Since Buzz is built right into Gmail, you won’t need to install or set up anything – it is good to go automatically. Don’t be disappointed if you can’t find Buzz on your Gmail just yet, it takes some time to roll out, but it will be there eventually. Apart from that, you can also opt to share publicly with the world or privately to a small group of friends each time you post. All replies will also be sent to you in real-time, so you can always keep in touch and be up-to-date at all times. Hooking up to other sites like Picasa, Flickr, Google Reader and Twitter is also a breeze, making sure you’re always connected. If you can’t sit in front of your PC all day long, there is always a mobile phone version. Have you tried out Google Buzz yet, and how do you find it? Netgear and Ericsson team up to deliver the MBRN3300 Posted: 09 Feb 2010 06:15 PM PST Both Netgear and Ericsson have come together to create what is known as the new Netgear MBRN3300E 3G Mobile Broadband Router with internal 3G radio, where the latter offers its leadership and expertise in 3G mobile networks, while the former delivers its experience in routing, firewalls, wireless and IP networks. If you’re going to head down to Barcelona next week for the Mobile World Congress, then make sure you make a beeline for the Ericsson pavilion as the MBRN3300E will be featured there for all four days. Already available, the MBRN3300E Mobile Broadband Router will merge a 3G WAN with 802.11n wireless and Ethernet LAN, which means you can always share your portable Internet connection with others through the creation of an ad hoc wireless hotspot, or hooking up older devices without wireless connectivity through the age-old method of an Ethernet cable. As for performance, you need not worry about speed, since this model can output 270 Mbps on the wireless LAN side and boasts a full-featured firewall for data security purposes. Thanks to the incorporation of Ericsson’s 3G mobile broadband technology, the MBRN3300E can deliver cost-efficient Internet access for home and business users, making it the perfect choice for locations that lack wired infrastructure as well as offering Internet access from trains, buses, automobiles, RVs or boats. Apart from all of the above-mentioned, additional features include Live Parental Controls and content filtering to make sure you know what your kids are doing, Stateful Packet Inspection (SPI), VPN pass-through and Denial of Service protection for added security, Guest networks (multiple SSID) capability to enable customers to set up multiple wireless networks within a home or small business, Automatic Quality of Service (QoS) for reliable video, voice and gaming, and a broadband usage meter to ensure accurate measurement of download Internet traffic with customized alerts whenever you are about to hit your monthly bandwidth threshold, potentially avoiding excess usage charges that add up quickly to a phenomenal amount.
