iPhone 4: Because we just had to write about it

Posted: 07 Jun 2010 03:16 PM PDT

I’m guessing that most of you already know about Steve Jobs’ keynote at WWDC this morning, and how iPhone version 4 has just been unveiled.

If you missed the keynote, here are the highlights after the jump:

The new version of the iPhone has black glass and a stainless steel rim, not to mention a second front-facing camera for video conferencing. Okay, you probably knew about those changes from that leak a while ago, but I would rather not get into that.

What you might not know about is the new battery, which is capable of “7 talk hours over 3G, 6 browsing hours over 3G, 10 browsing hours over Wi-Fi, 10 hours with video, 40 hours with music, and 300 hours on standby”.

Another key feature that Jobs just loved to talk about was the Retina Display. Apparently, it has “four times as many pixels compared to the previous iPhone display with 326 pixels per inch resolution in the screen”. This iPhone 4 also has a new accelerometer to make 6-axis sensing, and an extra microphone for canceling out noise.

Jobs was also really proud of the iMovie editing software for editing video clips and adding effects to still images. This iMovie is a separate application and not included with the iPhone, though.

If you want to see more, you’ll have to wait until the official release date of June 24. Prices are set at $199 for 16GB and $299 for 32GB.

Monsterbike is the tallest thing on three wheels

Posted: 07 Jun 2010 02:48 PM PDT

I’m sure that you have seen those bikes from the old days, with that huge front wheel. I’m not certain what they are called, but go ahead and cross one of those with a monster truck, and you have this: the Monsterbike.

According to my Source, it is “quite possibly the largest yet rideable three-wheeled bicycle ever made”. Shouldn’t it be the largest tricycle ever made? Oh well. Check out the video after the jump.

Here’s another thing that my source says: “Sure, it’s impractical, but just about everybody will get out of your way when they see you coming. I’d like to see you get the same reaction on a normal bike.”

Is this why someone would invent such a monstrosity? I’m not saying that it is a freaky bike, but it does have “monster” in its name. In other words, I’m not insulting the Monsterbike, because I have been on a two-wheeler in traffic, and if there is one thing that I hate, it is the feeling of being a two-wheeled self-powered person on a four-wheeled, motor-propelled world. It’s like you could be hit by a car, and no one would notice.

This is why the Monsterbike was invented, so everyone would notice. I doubt you could mow over a car with it and create the mayhem and carnage of a Monster Truck rally, but hey, who wouldn’t want to ride this thing?

Bros and Mos give MacBooks personality

Posted: 07 Jun 2010 02:41 PM PDT

Having a MacBook means that you can’t go blending in with the rest of the world, it’s just against the rules.  Should you want to perk up your MacBook a little, you can give it some personality with these stickers.  There is a wide range of them, but each one makes your Apple logo look like a man’s head.  Sorry, there are no female versions, but if you like your mustaches then you’ll have plenty to look at.

Unfortunately, my little plastic Apple has seemed to have popped apart on the inside of my laptop, so if I did this it’d make things look a little strange.  Should your Apple be in a bit better shape than mine you’ll have the Bros and Mos collection to flip through.  There are a total of 16 different choices and half of those are purely mustaches.  You can purchase these for 8 Euros through Stick With Me Baby or about $9.50.

Scarab: A self-driving, electric police pursuit vehicle

Posted: 07 Jun 2010 02:06 PM PDT

Once again, it would appear that science fiction has somehow turned into fact with the Scarab car.

Basically, the Scarab is a car that is self-driven, like K.I.T.T. from Knight Rider. This self-driving car works a little different than the one from the TV show.

In other words, there is no David Hasselhoff sitting behind the wheel to patrol the streets. The idea behind the Scarab is to to have an officer “tag” a speeding vehicle with a radar gun, and the Scarab then takes over with the chase.

I believe that the purpose of the Scarab is to cut down on officer casualties in high speed police chases. I would have to say that I don’t feel comfortable having a robot car chase a car that could already create casualties. I just don’t think I can trust a robot behind the wheel just yet.

Best of all, this vehicle is designed to be eco-friendly with zero-emissions. It is one hundred percent electric, and I’m guessing it will be charging while it is not pursuing the bad guys.

Now, I have no idea how a Scarab is going to stop a vehicle. The designer, Carl Archambeault, didn’t see fit to put any weapons on it. Then again, do you want a robot vehicle holding weapons?

Those of you that often leave your home unprotected and travel the world probably could use a little something to keep you from worrying.  Sure, you could get an alarm system for your home that alerts you when someone has entered your home, but sometimes you just need to see for yourself that everything is in perfect order.  That’s where this Panasonic BL-C230A Wireless Camera would come in very handy.

The camera allows you to see in real time full motion video no matter where you’re at.  It just uses a personalized secure web address that happens to be provided for free.  Should you want to move the camera around you can pan, tilt and zoom from your remote location.  It has all sorts of ways to customize the usage like changing out the sensor settings or just keeping the camera on during certain times of the day.  The built-in memory can store images taken when the sensor is triggered and send off the pictures to your email.  The software makes it possible to connect up to 16 cameras at the same time.  You can purchase one for $299.25 with the software included.

Slip Watch makes life easier

Posted: 07 Jun 2010 12:15 PM PDT

Every single time you want to check your watch to read the time, you have to twist your arm around just to read it.  Thankfully someone has finally had the common sense to create a watch that you don’t have to be a contortionist to read.  Sure, you could always turn your arm to read the time, but this is so much easier.

Of course, the watch looks a little silly with the face slightly angled, but it keeps things interesting.  The Slip Watch doesn’t exactly have numbers printed on it, so until you get used to the lack of labeling it might still take a few extra seconds to read the watch.  After that though you’ll have the ability to be much more lazy about reading the time.  Sadly this doesn’t appear to be a purchasable item.  It seems to be purely a concept by the NonLinear Studio.

GPS Tracker Phone for Kids

Posted: 07 Jun 2010 06:30 AM PDT

Keeping track of your little ones can get quite challenging in this day and age, especially when you are a busy parent who has tons to juggle, unlike the older days where there weren’t that many distractions. If you happen to bring your kids out often, the GPS Tracker Phone for Kids could just be the thing for you. This is a back-to-basic cellphone that targets not only children but seniors as well, relying on the latest GPS tracking technology. It allows one to make phone calls only when needed, where you can program 5 preset numbers within including 1 emergency SOS number, and there is no worry of Internet predators targeting children since this has no text messaging or Internet surfing capability. Inside lies a GPS tracker that lets you keep track of its real time position by sending a text message to the tracker phone anytime required. You can also set a geo-fence zone to prevent your little ones from venturing beyond a certain area by being alerted. Of course, nothing beats due diligence on a parent’s part, but sometimes technology to the tune of $135 does help.
