Griffin AirStrap Lite for the PlayBook, Xoom, Galaxy Tab 10.1, and the iPads

Posted: 09 Dec 2011 07:30 AM PST

Some of you might remember when we covered the iPad Strap, a device that covers the back of the iPad with a strap so you can use everyone’s favorite tablet with one hand.

Griffin has an AirStrap Lite that is essentially the same thing, but they don’t just have it for the iPad. They have it for the Blackberry Playbook, the Motorola Xoom, and the Galaxy Tab 10.1.

I got a chance to try it out for the Galaxy Tab 10.1, and I found that it was pretty light. It seems to be made of some sort of leathery material, but normally leather materials are labelled as such on the box.

I believe that all cases for tablets are probably going to follow the AirStrap Lite model. After all, as tablets get more common and the screens get larger, they can’t help but become heavier. Since our lifestyles seem to demand them to be used one-handed, I wouldn’t be surprised if all tablets soon come with a tablet handle like an AirStrap Lite.

If you want to get in on this Strap feature early, just head over to the Griffin site and pay $39.99 for the Galaxy Tab 10.1, Playbook, or Xoom versions. The AirStrap for the iPad is $29.99, and $49.99 for the iPad 2.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, played with a Kinect

Posted: 09 Dec 2011 07:15 AM PST

Last summer at E3, Microsoft announced at they were putting out some very cool games for the Xbox 360 Kinect.

I will leave it up to you to decide whether or not the holiday games for the Kinect are up to par. One of the biggest games on the market for the Xbox 360 is Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, and this man that you see in the upper corner of the image has figured out how to link the Kinect with this popular fantasy game.

You can watch a video after the jump, and I will have to say that it gives me hope for a more active video game future. You can see that sword slashes and spells are done with realistic pushes of the hand, but another hand is controlling the camera. Other commands are done with the power of voice.

My recent playing of The Legend of Zelda: Skyword Sword has resulted in arm strain due to the swinging of the titular blade. I would love to play this game with a Kinect interface, and the Wiimotes do somewhat of a good job. Someone needs to create some video game treadmill or something for the simulation of running and jumping.

HELO TC Touch-Controlled Helicopter uses your iDevice

Posted: 09 Dec 2011 07:00 AM PST

Since toys are always a popular seller this Christmas, you might as well get something that big kids can play with with the Helo TC Touch-Controlled Helicopter.

It is similar to the Dexim AppSpeed, a miniature iPhone controlled truck, but it takes to the air. It has a twin-rotor remote design for a stable controlled flight, provided it is indoors.

As you might have guessed, there is an app for this. You can download it for free, and the Helo TC app has an interesting ability to record and store up to three Flight Plans so you, or another pilot, can easily repeat a favorite flight pattern. You can plan routes around the furniture with missions to fly and obstacles to avoid, in order to replay them.

Just to let you know, you have to plug your iDevice via headphone jack into a Helo TC Flight Deck, and this Flight Deck and the copter itself take 2 AAA batteries each. I’m not certain why Griffin decided to go with 4 AAA batteries instead of USB charging, but you can always buy rechargeable AAA batteries.

If you want to get in on this copter deal, it is available on the Griffin site for $49.99. Considering that there are an abundance of low-priced RC helicopters available on the market today, I will leave it up to you whether or not this is a good deal.

Constellation Projecting Ladybug Night Light

Posted: 09 Dec 2011 05:30 AM PST

Kids do have their fear of the dark, and for some of them, they require some sort of night light to keep them comforted. Well, instead of getting your usual lamp, you might want to check out some other options that are on the market which might be closer to what your little one wants as a sleeping companion – like the $34.95 Constellation Projecting Ladybug Night Light, for instance.

This plush pink ladybug seems to be perpetually asleep, but when you turn it on, it is capable of projecting all seven constellations onto a ceiling, creating a tranquil sleeping environment for children (and perhaps, adults too, who knows?) It will feature an illuminated plastic shell that is further divided into seven sections, where these sections will boast of apertures that enable light to pass through when the red, blue, or green backlight is turned on.

Powered by a trio of AAA batteries, you might want to look into rechargeables in the long run.

Click Dip-Switch Watch

Posted: 09 Dec 2011 05:00 AM PST

Here is a way for you to roll back the years if you were born in the 1980s – and I do not mean playing Pac-Man over and over again, or making sure there are Mario Bros. decals all over your room. No sir, I’m referring to the $149.99 Click Dip-Switch Watch which works just as the name suggests – it will feature dip switches that will activate different functions on the watch, and to have it come packaged in a circuit board makes it all the more attractive.

Each dip switch will activate a different function of the watch, ranging from its bar graph metered time display, to 12 hour and 24 hour digital time display, month, date, day of week, and backlight. Heck, even the strap resembles an electronic ribbon where it comes packaged in an actual circuit board. The battery used will be of the CR2032 variety, where you are recommended to have them replaced whenever the lights turn dim.
