Zipz Wine – In a Glass, to Go!

Yes, I am here to extol the joys of portable, self contained, alcoholic beverages. I fondly remember the days where anything could be made better by a  six-pack (or two) of my favorite beer, heck you could take a can of beer anywhere, it came in its own serving container, just pop the top and enjoy… none of that pesky bottle opening, cork closing, annoying wine glass business you have with a bottle of Merlot.

So wine never got to be the beach beverage of choice.. or tailgate parties, picnics or sporting events. (anywhere convenience was a factor) Until now. Meet Zipz Wine, a neat solution that brings you premium wines in a very sophisticated single serve “glass” that lets you take your wine with you, almost anywhere you want to go, yet still be able to sip it in style.

Each 100% recyclable Zipz Wine “glass” is covered in a special, patented plastic wrap that you simply peel off, allowing you to remove the lid which is then simply snapped to the bottom of the base, becoming the foot. It looks and feels like real glass, but won’t cause a problem if dropped near your pool or patio… neat!

Sure, I still love a good beer, but a lovely glass of wine is always a treat, and Zipz is serving up some premium California wines like Chardonnay, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and a nice Pinot Grigio. I can see some poolside Cabernet in my future, if you can see some in yours, visit Zachys.com or find a local retailer at Zipzwine.com. Cheers!

Play the Violin Like a Pro

What is a musician to do when they want to take up a completely different instrument? Well, in the case of Dylan Menzies, create a gadget that produces sweet sounds without the years and years of practice. This sax and keyboard player wanted to come up with an authentic method to reproduce the sweet sounds of a violin. So he took to technology.

The O-Bow involves an optical sensor, software and a mini keyboard. The sensor detects angle and speed of the bow. The keyboard enables Menzies to choose the notes to play and the software processes it all and enables creation of different sounds. In a matter of minutes you can produce realistic violin sounds while sitting at your computer. Menzies plans to bring the O-Bow to market, but no launch plans exist yet. For anyone looking to record music or who simply loves the sounds you suddenly have a violin at your disposal.

Moms keep in touch with newborns using iPad

There is nothing quite like the smell of a newborn baby, and of course, the promise and joy that a new life is able to bring into one's life. The thing is, there are instances where new mothers are separated from their newborns right after birth, no thanks to a host of reasons, where among them include complications that arise post birth, a premature birth, or for some, the need for post surgical recovery. Of course, this moment in time would definitely be very hard for the mother, who has for at least 7 months already did her fair bit in making sure that said child would have a relatively safe passage into this world. In order to ease the pain of this separation in a virtual manner, the Cedars-Sinai hospital in Los Angeles will be relying on the wonders of an iPad in their neonatal intensive care unit for video teleconferencing purposes between mothers and children.

The new program will be known as BabyTime, where it also offers a new mother the ability to speak with the clinicians who happen to take care of her baby. This is more than a welcome feature, especially when things do seem to go downhill at the moment, as this particular connection between mother and child is one that remains all life long, even right from the very beginning. The iPad will be set up right beside the infant's incubator the moment said infant enters the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, while the new mother would be on the receiving end of an iPad herself, as she can log onto BabyTime twice a day.

Selma Braziel, nurse manager for the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, said, "The BabyTime program will reduce fear and stress in the new moms as they are able to see their babies and also communicate with the doctors and nurses." I can totally identify with what she said, and it makes a potentially traumatic experience more manageable, which is always a good thing.

Natalia Project is perfect for civil rights activists

There will always be tyranny in this world, and of course, it is up to the rest of the general populace to step up and be responsible in toppling such tyrants, although most of the time, such activists will be at a disadvantage for obvious reasons – they lack the machinery, military might and of course, financial backing to take up so public a cause. Not only that, the risks are high for campaigners, as they could end up beaten, kidnapped or in the very extreme, murdered, whih is why Civil Rights Defenders in Stockholm has rolled out the Natalia Project.

Why the Natalia Project? This particular title was named after Natalia Estemirova, a human rights activist who was abducted and subsequently, murdered, in Chechnya in 2009. The Natalia Project will see the development of an electronic bracelet which will be able to send a pre-programmed text alarm should it be activated or forcibly removed. Not only that, within the bracelet lies a wireless assault alarm system that will hopefully draw immediate attention to any assaults on human rights activists.

Civil Rights Defenders has so far remained rather quiet on the kind of technology that they have packed in the Natalia Project, but this is understandable. We do know, however, that it will use GPS and GSM technology, in addition to the fact that bracelet itself has been programmed with “individual protocols for security.” Apart from the bracelets, the Natalia Project will also encourage folks to sign up using Twitter or Facebook so that they will be on the receiving end of weekly updates on the project, in addition to being part of a global alert network. Civil Rights Defenders has every intention of deploying 30 of such bracelets sometime this year, and want to see up to 55 of these in use by 2014. Unfortunately, only one has been funded to date.

Twilight Umbrella changes color adds some jazz to your life

Now, do not freak out when you hear of the name of this particular umbrella, as it has nothing to do with the unexplainable franchise of sparkling vampires that seem to snap apart like porcelain, where one of the most powerful "species" in the undead family is seemingly able to create life after copulating with a human. Well, the £24.95 Twilight Umbrella is not going to jive with all of you Stephenie Meyer fans, but it definitely will go down well with the British, or folks living in that part of the world.

There is a purpose for the existence of the Twilight Umbrella, and as we all know, Britain gets plenty of rain – some say that it is way too much, but others revel in the downpour despite it being too dreary and dull at times. Well, why not spruce up the situation with the Twilight Umbrella, where it comes in a hot pink color, and will sport little fibre optic lights that are dotted all around it. There is no need for any electricity to power the Twilight Umbrella, as just batteries are required.

Serious Sportfisherman's Watch

Some folks absolutely love fishing, where their devotion to the sport or activity is clearly on par with those who cannot get enough of golf. Well, being out in the open sea, or by the creek, you would definitely want to be well equipped, and a timepiece can be said to be a crucial piece of equipment for you to wear. I guess it makes perfect sense then to pick up the $499.95 Serious Sportfisherman’s Watch, where the name of this particular timepiece says it all.

The Serious Sportfisherman’s Watch will (obviously) be able to tell the time, in addition to the moon phase and tidal information for up to 275 major fishing ports that are located around the world. It is a veritable electronic tome of information on maritime locations within the U.S., Canada, Central America, Caribbean, and Pacific, where they range from Montauk Point to Grand Cayman to Papeete Harbor. Each location will see the watch show the next two upcoming tides and their respective heights, current moon phase, incoming or outgoing tidal flow, and sunrise/sunset times among others. You can turn off the display for a clean analog look, where its hands and hour markers will be illuminated for darkened conditions.

Quartz movement would pave the way for precise timekeeping, where it is constructed from 316L marine-grade stainless steel. The case sports a screw-down crown and case back that offers a rigid, watertight seal, making sure you get to enjoy water resistance up to 656′.
