The Smoking Gun smokes but doesn’t cook food Posted: 09 Aug 2010 04:22 PM PDT If you’ve become obsessed with giving your food that smoky flavor, you might looking into this Smoking Gun.  It’ll allow for you to smoke a whole lot more than you normally would thanks to some unconventional methods.  Instead of being stuck only smoking foods while you cook them, you can smoke items that you don’t actually want cooked. Seagull LED Table Lamp Posted: 09 Aug 2010 03:45 PM PDT This gadget took a design cue from seagulls in a very smart way.  The top of this lamp looks like its ready to break away from the stand and fly off into the darkness, lighting the ground as it goes.  This interesting looking light isn’t just another concept design either.  It’ll soon be up for sale so that you can light your favorite book with it. Those wings aren’t just there for looks either, they have a little movement to give you control over the angle of the lights.  The light itself is packed full of 72 LED lights, that all together only have an output of 14W.  Which is likely enough to make it appeal to those of you that are trying to be a little more energy efficient.  The knob to turn it off and on also can dim the light as dim as 5%.  These are said to become available this August. Sharpie creates liquid pencils Posted: 09 Aug 2010 03:01 PM PDT It seems like people are writing less and less, some prefer to even type up quick memos instead of jotting them down on a post-it note.  For those that still prefer to write things down on normal paper, there’s a new writing utensil out there.  Sharpie has come out with an interesting new pencil, that mimics pens by being liquid. We already have erasable pens and mechanical pencils, I suppose this was the logical next step.  We just couldn’t keep writing in the same way that other generations did 50 years ago.  These Sharpie pencils will allow for you to erase your work up to a certain point.  After it’s been sitting for over 3 days you won’t be able to erase it, but for at least a little while you can.  These are already making their way to Office Depot just in time for the back to school frenzy of shopping. Automatic Can Bin Posted: 09 Aug 2010 06:30 AM PDT For those of you who have run out of ways to decorate your home, you might want to consider getting the Automatic Can Bin. After all, it definitely is cheaper than those high end models from names like Brabantia, and for £49.99 a pop, you will be able to place this conversation starter in just about any corner of the home without having it look out of place. Featuring a sensor in its lid that makes things more practical and hygienic, the Automatic Can Bin will feature a mirror finish (hopefully it won’t get scratched too soon) alongside stainless steel. The sensor is sensitive enough to detect movement from 15cm to 20cm away, and will close after 5 secnods. A black plastic inner removable liner bucket makes it easier to clean it separately once the bin is nearly full – just don’t exceed the 30 liter limit and you’ll do just fine. Karate Copycat Challenge Posted: 09 Aug 2010 06:00 AM PDT Want to hone your reflexes, but don’t want to take chances by playing with a crab and its pincers? Enter the Karate Copycat Challenge, where this game will challenge players to use quick, karate-like hand movements in order to match sequences of flashing lights and music. There is a quartet of semi-circular rings in the device itself, were each of them will feature a curved light bar that illuminates according to one of seven possible games. Players will be directed to wave a hand into the open space within a certain interval after a light flashes while a musical note plays to score. In order to keep track of your progress (or your failure to keep up), a motion detector in each space will measure a player’s response time to ensure the sequence is followed to a tee. As you attempt to repeat an accelerating pattern of lights, you will also be instrumental in keeping a song going by waving hands through loops as they illuminate, enabling you to “tag” as many lights within a certain timeframe, or to build/compose songs by playing the game like a musical instrument. Best to get a quartet of rechargeable AA batteries to go along with this if you intend to be on the green side of things. Hammacher is asking $39.95 for the Karate Copycat Challenge. Magic Mirror can do some interesting, interactive things Posted: 09 Aug 2010 05:59 AM PDT We’ve seen a lot of magic mirrors here on Coolest Gadgets, like the Magic Mirror Security System and the Interactive Mirror. This is another in a short line of magical mirrors. This “magic mirror” is designed by Al Linke, and my source says that it was originally designed for his daughter’s playhouse. I’m not certain what he intended it to do for his daughter, maybe some sort of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs tribute toy. He definitely put a whole new twist on it as he was able to give it the ability to give weather reports. It can also tell you how your stock portfolio is progressing. Another added feature is breathalyzer mode. All you have to do is breathe into a small apparatus (not the mirror glass itself) and it will read your Blood Alcohol Level. I certain don’t see why there couldn’t be a custom-made magic mirror for everyone. I think I would design it like the Yahoo home page, so it could read me my email, give me news headlines, and maybe even give me my schedule. I’m not certain if I want that face talking to me. Rock’Em Sock ‘Em Robots done wirelessly Posted: 09 Aug 2010 05:18 AM PDT I am sure that you don’t really need an introduction to the game that these people are playing. I’m sure all of us have played Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em robots at some point in our lives. I’m also sure that you have noticed that the people playing this game are not using their hands. That is because Zachery Shivers and Anne Flichbaugh have made Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em robots motion controlled. There is a video here if you want to see how they did it. Be warned, there is a lot of technical jargon that the layman may not understand. All you need to know is that the wrists can detect punching motion and other movement, and it transmits to the figures so one player can knock the other player’s block off. The rest is a lot of specifics that make it look like you could build a motion controlled version of this game for yourself. Just to let you know, this is not something that a toy maker is working on at this present time. This is a part of a Texas Instruments’ Co-op Design Challenge. So do we have a winner? Epson wants you to get printing with more all-in-one models Posted: 09 Aug 2010 05:00 AM PDT Epson knows that good quality printers are hard to come by these days, and they being an old hand in the industry, intends to spice it up with more all-in-one models. We’re talking about the new range of Artisan all-in-ones, namely the Artisan 835 and Artisan 725. It seems that Epson has done a little bit of market research on their own, and the results were in their favor (obviously), where image quality of their printers was preferred by consumers 3-to-1 over the competition. It also helps that Epson’s latest range of printers will come with a host of unique features, making them being marketed as a “perfect match” for today's active, digital families that who need just a solitary solution when it comes to printing. The Artisan 835 would be the flagship model of the series, where it will feature a 7.8″ smart touch panel display, a 3.5″ color LCD display, an integrated fax capability (not that many people use it these days, but still), and a 30-page Automatic Document Feeder which makes it a snap to copy and fax documents in a jiffy. As for the Artisan 725, this model will come with an enhanced touch panel for easier navigation. Both of them will come with 2.5 times faster wireless connectivity thanks to Wi-Fi n connectivity, not to mention support for wireless printing from an Apple iPhone. It also touts to have the fastest 4" x 6" photo print speed in the world, but we guess that depends on how it was benchmarked. Using Epson's six-color Ultra Hi-Definition Claria ink, printouts are expected to look stunning, whether images or text. And Now the Award for Best Use of a Giant Robotic Arm Posted: 09 Aug 2010 04:27 AM PDT My source called this photo the “image of the day”, and I have to agree. You might wonder this is. Just to let you know, it has nothing to do with Neo and his friends aboard the Nebuchadnezzar getting plugged into the Matrix. It is about creating a virtual simulation. Believe it or not, the purple section that you see in the photo is part of a gigantic robotic arm. I don’t know what this mammoth robot arm was originally used for, but it is now a vital part of a racing simulator. You can watch the video after the jump if you don’t believe me. I guess what you don’t see here in the picture is the video screen that is certainly in front of the user in the video. You will notice how the arm will lean back as the speed increases, and it shifts back and forth with the turns. I’m pretty certain that this is how Disneyland’s Star Tours works. This robot arm/racing simulator is part of a study by Paolo Robuffo Giordano at Germany’s Max Planck Institute for Biological Cybernetics, researching the way our bodies experience motion. I don’t think it is made for home use like the SimCraft, but I suppose if I had a giant robot arm, a TV screen, a racing game, then this is definitely the best combination that I could think of.
