Philips Sustainable City Lights concept project

Posted: 24 Feb 2010 04:23 PM PST

What you are seeing here is the Sustainable City Lights concept project from our friends at Philips.

Yes, Philips has given us many terrific products in the past few decades, and I cannot help think that this one seems really obvious.

You see, our streets just have to be lit at night, right? Of course, these streetlights have to be powered by something, so why not the power of the sun? Well, for one thing, streetlights only come on at night.

However, streetlights don’t do much during the day except make themselves vulnerable to an ever-abundant energy source known as the sun. Therefore, I see absolutely no reason why streetlights can’t just have solar panels on streetlights that absorb energy during the day so they can be used at night.

Of course, I am certain there has to be something with my logic, or else we would be doing this already. Perhaps you can’t get that much power during the day to last you through the night, especially when there are times of the year when the days are shorter.

Of course, I’m speaking as someone who might not know any better. I hope Philips work out the kinks that I am thinking of associated with this particular project.

True Fidelity Active Noise Canceling Headphones from Able Planet

Posted: 24 Feb 2010 04:21 PM PST

We’ve reported on Able Planet’s products before, and they usually produce some high quality headphones.

The True Fidelity Active Noise Canceling Headphones (NC300B) are no exception, and I recently had a chance to try them out for myself.

I don’t think that I have ears that can discern precisely how good the True Fidelity headphones are in comparison to other Able Planet products, but I found these padded jobs were good enough to bear the Able Planet name.

This one has a volume control located right on the wire for easy adjusting. There is a AAA battery required, and that will power the headphones for the LINX AUDIO technology.

I did notice only one problem with these headphones. While I was watching Iron Man, I noticed a a sound like helicopter blades in the background. However, that sound only happened with the headphones worn at a certain angle. It was pretty easy to adjust the headband so I didn’t hear the noise anymore, just quality sound.

The True Fidelity headphones from Able Planet come with a case that stores the headphones quite well, provided the earcups are turned like they are in the picture.

According to the company site, this product has won over 20 International CES and CTIA awards. If you want in on this action, feel free to head over to the Able Planet site and get it for $129.99.

Alphie gets and upgrade

Posted: 24 Feb 2010 03:37 PM PST

Some of you might remember Alphie, a toy from the 80s that used to be advertised by Joan Lunden. (Just be glad I couldn’t find a video of that ad on YouTube, or you would know the meaning of death by sugary kindness!)

Alphie was a toy that used index cards and buttons to teach math, colors, as well as other basic skills. I believe that if the tyke got the question right, Alphie’s clown face would light up.

It would appear that Alphie has received an update, but a less colorful face. Now he has an LCD for his eyes, and can thus do a lot more facial expressions than ever before.

I’m not certain what would happen if your child gets the right answer. Perhaps the eyes will look happier. By the way, if you were going to make the eyes on an LCD screen, then you should have put the mouth on the screen as well.

Oh, Alphie also knows how to talk, but I don’t think he is programmable. He still requires the index cards instead of software upgrades, and the buttons still remain. At least they are round and more button-like.

This appeared at the Toyfair at Hasbro’s booth, but it won’t be available until Fall for $39.99. Alphie includes 30 double-sided index cards that have over 350 questions and challenges.

Cloak Bag disguises your fancy camera

Posted: 24 Feb 2010 02:30 PM PST

When you put your camera into the camera bag, usually it means you’re done.  Then of course as soon as you zip up that bag, there will be a great shot that you missed.  It just always seems to work that way.  Well instead of missing important pictures, now you can own a bag that lets you take all of the pictures you want without removing it from the bag.  You’ll still have the benefit of just looking like you’re carrying around a normal bag, but secretly you’re still fully capable of taking pictures.

Just flip up the top and it’ll reveal all of the necessary buttons to work your camera.  Plus you’ll easily be able to see the screen of your digital camera.  The bottom of the bag is missing entirely, so there will be no need to remove anything.  It’s just as easy as it would normally be to use your camera.  Plus there’s a zipper pocket that once unzipped allows you to mess with the camera lens.  The Cloak Bag won’t let you show off your camera, but instead keeps people from trying to steal it constantly.  Each one of these bags will cost you $49.99.

R2-D2 USB Humidifier

Posted: 24 Feb 2010 01:35 PM PST

In the middle of winter, offices and homes always seem to be horribly dried out.  If you’d like a small refresher, then R2-D2 is here to rescue you.  He’ll make sure that you won’t get dried out while you’re working your poor fingers to the bone at your desk.  Sure he won’t work for your entire home, but he’ll at least come in handy when you’re sitting directly in front of him at your desk.

Not so shockingly, this gadget is originally from Japan.  However, Think Geek has actually managed to pick this one up, so you’ll be able to find it in other parts of the world.  The tiny humidifier is powered by your USB port.  Beyond that it’s pretty basic, just add water and plug it in.  You can purchase it through Think Geek for all of $19.99.

Water Bobble has built-in filter

Posted: 24 Feb 2010 01:05 PM PST

If you’re very careful about the water you drink, perhaps it’d be easier to carry one of these around.  Instead of just having a filter on your faucet or on a pitcher in your fridge, you can have a portable one.  It might make you feel better about drinking tap water while you’re out and about.  Plus, for those of you that like to travel to foreign countries, if you’re worried about the water, you could always take this with you.

It appears the kit comes with a bottle and all.  They’ve also gone as far as to use recycled materials.  The steps are pretty obvious.  You fill up the bottle itself, then after filled and filter is placed on the bottle, you squeeze the water through the filter.  The filter will need replaced after 2 months or 40 gallons of water.  These come in all sorts of colors and will only cost you $9.95 a piece.

Lego toys galore

Posted: 24 Feb 2010 05:30 AM PST

Lego has been a really innovative toy over the years, and this time round at the Toy Fair 2010, Lego has again displayed the flexibility of their building blocks by boasting a bento box, huge Lego minifig alarms from the Star Wars universe, as well as a Lego Torch and Head Lamp that you see above. The Lego Torch and Head Lamp comes in the form of a regular, yellow-skinned minifig (albeit at a much larger scale), where there is a solar panel on the back of the torch to help it remain juiced up even when there are no batteries in the vicinity. Cute looking stuff – but can it withstand the rigors of outdoor use as they were meant to?

Enlighted offers lighted capes and cloaks

Posted: 24 Feb 2010 05:00 AM PST

Enlighted is a company that certainly knows how to help you make a fashion statement in front of everyone else – it offers a light-up cape or cloak, so never mind if you have a symbol of a bat across your chest, or come dressed in red and blue leotards with the ability to stick onto ceilings and walls with uncanny ease – both Batman and Spiderman won’t be able to draw in the chicks at a party since they lack the “oomph” factor associated with your lighted cape. We’re pretty sure that Darth Vader or the Emperor would specially commission one of these puppies during their Sith parties.

Pentax K-7 Limited Silver edition digital camera

Posted: 24 Feb 2010 04:30 AM PST

Pentax’s K-7 digital camera isn’t something that is new to the market, as it was released a while ago but the folks over at Japan decided that a splash of silver is always welcome, hence the Pentax K-7 Limited Silver edition digital camera. As with any device which falls under the limited edition category, you can be sure that quantities will be limited, and the same applies to the Pentax K-7. It will be limited to a mere 1,000 sets worldwide, so collectors as well as hobbyists who want something different or special might want to give this Limited Silver edition run a go, otherwise picking one up in the second hand market or on an online auction site is going to cost you much, much more sometime down the road. Let us take a look at this rehash of a summer 2009 digital camera in greater detail right after the jump.

This special-edition model isn’t just about cosmetic changes, as it comes with several features that distinguish it from the original black-colored Pentax K-7, where among it includes a silver-colored body and a "golden section ratio" focusing screen. The silver used is identical with the color of the high-performance FA Limited interchangeable lens series, a family of lenses which was specially designed to offer the highest level of image description. Apart from that, the K-7 Limited Silver also stands out from the crowd due to its color, and is the perfect stylistic match for any FA Limited-series lens. You get the SR (Shake Reduction) lettering in gold color located in the lower segment of the body, where it stands out against the black-colored, leather-like finish.

As for the exclusive "golden section ratio" focusing screen, this allows the photographer to swiftly and effortlessly compose a perfectly balanced image. Its LCD display on the camera's back panel receives additional protection against knocks and scratches thanks to a reinforced glass plate that is highly shock- and scratch-resistant. Pentax has also made sure that its camera firmware has been upgraded to the latest version (Ver. 1.03), heping make the camera's lens compensation function operable with the FA Limited-series lenses. No idea on pricing, but it should cost a premium over the regular K-7.
