Broom Groomer for improved sweeping action

Posted: 05 May 2010 05:30 PM PDT

If you do not have the ability to purchase a vacuum cleaner and still rely on good old hand power using a broom, why not settle for the most efficient broom possible? That is now available in the form of the Broom Groomer, where it comes with a row of rubber teeth protruding from the back end of the dust pan to clean the broom’s bristles when you’re done sweeping, doing away with dust bunnies for good. Apart from that, there is a built-in foot rest at the dustpan handle, letting you steady the dustpan for hands-free sweeping. The body of the Broom Groomer itself is made out of hard, durable plastic, featuring rubber accents on the handle grip, wall-hanging hole, bristle cleaning teeth, and front edge guard. It costs just $9.99 at the moment, making it a suitable Mother’s Day gift, perhaps?

Microsoft Communicator Mobile for Nokia smartphones

Posted: 05 May 2010 05:00 PM PDT

Nokia’s smartphone market share has taken quite a beating over the past couple of years or so, with the rise of the Apple iPhone as well as the introduction of newer players to the market including Android-powered handsets. Well, that doesn’t mean that Nokia does not have a commanding lead – the Finnish cellphone company has come up with some pretty neat devices over the past year, and this time aims to improve the productivity level of their devices with and alliance with Microsoft, resulting in the Microsoft Communicator Mobile. This new unified communications client will hook up directly with a company’s communications systems, helping streamline mobile collaboration. As long as you own a Nokia E72 or E52, you will be able to download the English version today from Nokia’s Ovi Store to get started right away.

Bosses will definitely find Communicator Mobile to be a useful tool, since it allows one to check on their colleagues’ availability, while being able to click and choose on communicating with them via the best method, ranging from IM to email, text to phone call. All names and status of colleagues will be embedded directly into the devices’ contacts application, letting you update your own presence (as well as that of your colleagues), starting and joining instant messaging sessions while making calls directly from the contact card. This helps increase one’s efficiency, since you know whether a colleague is occupied or available for a conversation concerning work.

While Communicator Mobile is available only for the Nokia E72 and E52 as at press time, we do have word that there are plans to support additional devices sometime down the road, including the Nokia E5. Meanwhile, Nokia is already working on optimizing direct access to email and other personal information with Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync. In the future, you will find Communicator Mobile for Nokia pre-installed on select Nokia smartphones as well to get things up and running right out of the box.

EKON car uses the power of Emoticons

Posted: 05 May 2010 04:33 PM PDT

This isn’t the first time that we have posted about a concept car, and many of them sort of look the same.

For some reason, they all have this odd silver or gray color, and have lights in weird places, as if they existed in the world of Tron.

The EKON is definitely something very different as its main feature could change the very road as we know it. You see, it is the only car that I know that uses emoticons.

You see that red face on it? That is the car’s happy face. Yes, this is so you can signal to another driver that you are pleased with their performance. It beats the heck out of calling that “How’s my Driving” number and reporting positive feedback.

I’m not certain how much of the print you can see in the photo, but there are a whole catalog of emoticons that you can project on your car. For example, sadness, boredom, nervousness, surprise, or even some weird ones like “LOL” and other symbols.

Granted, I’m not certain how the user gets the Emoticon. Is there an array of buttons on the dash? That could be distracting. Maybe if you just text it in, but that is texting while driving.

Well, I’m sure by the time this car comes out, there will be voice controls for this emoticon. As for now, it is just a concept.

CuteCircuit Dress makes you glow, literally

Posted: 05 May 2010 04:11 PM PDT

It seems like yesterday that we were covering the jacket with 200 laser diodes. Probably because it was yesterday.

Today, there is another piece of glowing clothing, but lasers are not a part of it. It does have some special lighting.

The woman that you see here is Kate Perry, and she is wearing a lovely glowing outfit. That’s right, the glow on her isn’t a reflection, but it is the CuteCircuit dress. It has strips of light that allow the fabric to have a soft glow.

CuteCircuit is the designer of the Galaxy Dress that we covered a while ago, and glows with 24,000 LEDs.

This particular CuteCircuit dress reminds me of some of the glowing parts of Queen Amidala’s wardrobe from the Star Wars prequels. Yeah, you can from a lot of science fiction wardrobes to get this one.

I can’t help but wonder if there is a future where all clothing will be glowing. If so, then how do you recharge the battery. I suppose that you could sit at your computer and plug in a retractable USB cord.

I’m assuming that, like the Mogwai from Gremlins, you do not want to get this dress wet. Of course, that is just a theory. Still, I’m assuming that you wouldn’t want to get a dress like this wet anyway.

The Rain Drum

Posted: 05 May 2010 02:00 PM PDT

If you’ve ever enjoyed the way the rain sounds when it hits a metal roof, then you’ll love this umbrella.  It keeps you dry, but not like other umbrellas.  Others just give soft little pitter patters, whereas this one will sound more like a drum.  Sure, you’ll probably make everyone else around you a little crazy, but at least you’ll have a little rhythm while you’re out walking in the rain.

The umbrella has all sorts of sections on it that makes it look a bit like a toy drum set.  Each one of those parts will make a different sound when the raindrops hit.  It has a snare, tom-tom and bass drum.  Plus a crash symbol and a hi-hat symbol.  Of course this is only a pretty little concept design as of now, so there won’t be any way to purchase it for a while if ever.

B-Cycle: GPS-equipped Bike Sharing System

Posted: 05 May 2010 01:33 PM PDT

B-cycle is a very interesting bike sharing system that is projected to debut in Denver.

B-cycle is a very simple concept. Let’s say you are walking through the city, and you want to get to where you are going faster. Instead of taking the bus or subway, you can just go to the nearest B-cycle station, grab a bike, and pedal where you want to go. Of course, there must be a B-cycle station close to where you are going, so you can drop it off.

B-cycle bikes have a GPS unit built inside of them, so they won’t be stolen without them being tracked down. In other words, no bicycle is left behind. That’s cliche, I know, but the internal GPS unit allows the user to check the bike out online when signed in.

The B-cycle program is by Trek, and it costs about $5 a day or $65 a year. There are also hourly usage fees, so I suppose it is pretty reasonably priced.

Then again, I haven’t tried out this service yet. However, I sure want to. It sounds like the best way of getting around a big city on two wheels without worrying about whether or not your bike gets stolen.

Illuminated Door Lever lights up when locked

Posted: 05 May 2010 12:52 PM PDT

If you like your LED lights and don’t mind spending a lot of money on even the smallest of things, these door knobs are the way to go.  Most of the time they will just look like a normal door handle, but once the lock is set these light up.  They’re a great way to let everyone know that you really don’t want to be bothered.  These come in a few different patterns, so you can find the one that suits you best.

You could attach one of these to a bathroom door or any type of in-home studio that you really would rather not be disturbed within.  Now it’s not really absolutely necessary, after all someone could just try the handle to find out it’s locked.  I’d prefer it if there was someway to push a button to illuminate the handle no matter if it’s locked or unlocked.  If it did that, it’d make it nice for hotel room doors.  That way you don’t have to slip outside to put a hanger on the door declaring you want to be left alone.  To power the handle you’ll just have to pop in a single AA battery.  You can purchase one of these for anywhere from $162 on up to $300 through Emtek.

YourPebbles are extremely multifunctional

Posted: 05 May 2010 11:48 AM PDT

These strange little pebbles resemble those cheap plastic coin containers that get sold within tourist traps, but these have a great deal more uses.  When these are flipped over you can store all kinds of small things within them.  Anything from change to flash drives to paperclips.  Plus once they’re all stacked together they can hold your phone or MP3 player in place.  Don’t worry the heat from your smart phone or any other gadget won’t cause any problems either.

These YourPebbles are made of platinum silicon and are heat-resistant.  When your laptop is getting a little too hot, you can slip one of these under the edges of your laptop to give the bottom a little airflow.  They even show one being used as a wrist rest for while you’re using the mouse.  These come in all sorts of bright colors.  Right now these are only available in Korea, but hopefully at some point they’ll be available elsewhere.
