Classic Manual Typewriter – Complete with Clickity Clack

Posted: 01 Mar 2012 01:05 PM PST

We reported sometime ago that the India-based typewriter manufacturing company known as Godrej and Boyce had closed its doors, and we suppossed that meant that no typewriters would ever be on the market again. I guess we all felt that way for a good reason, I mean, with computers and notebooks and countless other ways to get your thoughts on paper, who needed a typewriter, really?

Well Hammacher Schlemmer realized that there may be more than just a few old school devotees who pictured themselves click clacking away at the next great novel, and has brought back from the dead, a newly manufactured manual typewriter. Forget about the next great novel, I’ll just be happy to be able to address an envelope without having to read my printers instruction manual and figure out how to use the envelope tray. Geez.

Unlike old refurbished models, The Classic is newly manufactured to the exact standards of the originals, complete with seven tab stops, adjustable line spacing, and a backspace key. ”This 44-key machine produces 88 symbols in 10-characters-per-inch Pica 87 font—the typeface used to compose some of the greatest novels, screenplays, and poems of the 19th and 20th centuries.” Pretty Cool.

The typewriter is contained in a lightweight plastic housing with a hardshell carrying case, and comes with not only a black ribbon, but a red spool ribbon as well, just in case you really need to get your point across..

The Classic Manual Typewriter is available from Hammacher Schlemmer for around $199.95. For more information about this product, please visit  www.hammacher.com

Military Bullet Proof Underpants – Protecting your Privates

Posted: 01 Mar 2012 12:23 PM PST

Soldiers patrolling roads in Afghanistan on foot face a multitude of dangers that wouldn’t befall them in an armored car. One such risk would be to step on an improvised explosive device (or IED) to do so, one risked the loss of limbs and extensive damage to their, well, lets just call them their "boy parts". The Army and the Marines felt the need to do something to protect these soldiers, and taking a cue from British forces they found a solution to the problem in a knitted Kevlar material and then developed the Pelvic Protection System.

This system includes two layers of protection, including a protective under-garment, called the "PUG," and a protective outer-garment, called the "POG." Both components of the system are worn like shorts. The PUG is worn easily under a Soldier's pants and can be worn in place of underwear. They look pretty similar to bicycle shorts and are designed to be worn underneath your pants, real close to the skin, like kick ass leggings. Literally. The POG carries even greater ball-istic protection (I went there didnt I?) and is designed to be worn over, and in conjunction with, the PUG.

All joking aside, anything that keeps our troops even just a little bit safer is a good thing in my book and it appears that they also protect the oh-so-important femoral artery, and while it certainly cannot fully protect these guys from something like an IED blast, it can certainly assist in gaurding against some of the insidious damage caused by the explosion, like infections.

The PUG is manufactured with a breathable, moisture-wicking material along the outer thighs. The inner thighs are made with a knitted Kevlar to protect the fleshy inner parts and the aforementioned femoral artery. Over the groin lies another layer of  knitted or woven Kevlar. These garments are washable, weigh in at just under 7 ounces and will retail for around 95 bucks… retail? really? No word yet on color.

Huawei Ascend D Quad smartphone

Posted: 01 Mar 2012 05:30 AM PST

Mobile World Congress 2012 has certainly seen its fair share of smartphones which baffle the mind, and one of the main standouts would be the Huawei Ascend D Quad smartphone. The name itself gives the game away, where it will feature a quad-core processor underneath the hood – and you know for sure it is going to be quite the beast in terms of processing power, assuming developers would actually make the effort to write code which supports all four cores. At least at a lower clock speed, battery life can be conserved, but that is a different story for another day.

Let us see what Huawei has in store for us with the Huawei Ascend D Quad, as Huawei is certainly starting to make waves in terms of its quality for its range of devices. Huawei’s K3V2 quad-core 1.2GHz/1.5GHz processor will power the device, where it is also the compact among all the other 4.5″ smartphones in the market. Despite packing in four cores, the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich operating system that comes with it alongside Huawei’s proprietary power management system ensures you will be able to enjoy up to 30% in energy savings.

On to what would whet most peoples’ appetites – the hardware specifications the Ascend D Quad is touted to be the fastest smartphone in the market at the moment, sporting a 4.5″ 720P high definition touchscreen display, a 32-bit true color graphic processor, Dolby 5.1 Surround Sound audio as well as Audience earSmart voice technology. Want to snap great looking photos? Not a problem, thanks to its 8-megapixel BSI rear-facing camera, a 1.3 megapixel front-facing camera, as well as the ability to shoot 1080p full HD video-capture and playback capabilities.

The 1,800mAh battery is said to be able to last up to 2 days with normal usage – that is definitely pushing it, since most smartphones will last throughout the entire working day. Perhaps Huawei is on to something here that we do not know about? There is no word on pricing as at press time, but you can expect the Ascend D Quad series to be available in China, Australia, Europe, Asia-Pacific, North and South America, and the Middle East in the second quarter of the year.

Samsung Brightside arrives at Verizon Wireless

Posted: 01 Mar 2012 05:00 AM PST

Verizon Wireless lays claim to having the fastest 4G LTE network in the US, and we definitely do not doubt their capability of delivering what was claimed. However, that does not mean everyone is rushing to pick up the latest and greatest 4G-enabled device, as there is still this huge middle class group who are more than happy with a functional smartphone. Thankfully, handset manufacturers know this as well, and more often than not, reap most of their profit from this particular mid-range and entry level markets.

Samsung decides to light up the mid-range Android-powered smartphone scene with their latest handset, calling it the Samsung Brightside, and it will be arriving on Verizon Wireless. The Samsung Brightside occupies a very unique niche simply because it offers the flexibility of you using the touchscreen display or the physical QWERTY keyboard whenever you want to type an email or compose a text message.

I guess the inclusion of a physical QWERTY keyboard (albeit tucked away simply because of a slide-out design) makes life a whole lot easier, giving you the option of one over the other, depending on how convenient it is at that point in time. For instance, during the bitter winter, you do not want to remove your gloves just to type on the touchscreen, do you? Slide open the Samsung Brightside, and start tapping away on the physical keys while other full touchscreen smartphone owners freeze their fingers off.

Available from Verizon from today onwards, the Samsung Brightside will feature a 3.1″ touchscreen display, a full QWERTY slide-out keyboard, 3G connectivity, a microSD memory card slot, a 3.2-megapixel camera with timer, brightness control and shooting modes (single, continuous, panorama, mosaic and frame); scene modes (landscape, sports, party, beach, sunset, dawn, fall, night, backlight, fire and candlelight), a Document viewer feature that lets you check out Microsoft Office formats, Adobe PDF, ASCII and HTML documents in a jiffy.

The Samsung Brightside will cost $99.99 after a $50 mail-in rebate, assuming you agree to a new 2-year contract.

iLaunch Rocket Launcher for iPhone

Posted: 01 Mar 2012 04:30 AM PST

There is an app for everything, or so the saying goes. You might want to add another “job description” to your iPhone, where it is used to control a rocket launcher. After all, all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy, and the situation at the office does get rather hairy from time to time, deadlines and all to meet alongside pressure from the top management. Here is a special way to manage your stress – with the $79.99 iLaunch Rocket Launcher for iPhone.

The air-powered pistons are more than capable of firing foam darts up to 25 feet away, which means over 1,400 square feet from your office is covered – which should be good enough to handle most of your colleagues. The iPhone is not the only device that will play nice with the iLaunch Rocket Launcher for iPhone, as the iPad and iPod touch will also work as well. I guess this is where you put all the theoretical knowledge on angles in Angry Birds to good use.

Angry Birds Flash Drives

Posted: 01 Mar 2012 04:00 AM PST

You know the old saying, a bird in hand is worth two in the bush. Well, with the Angry Birds Flash Drives, it is worth 4GB worth of storage space on the go. You are able to choose from King Piggy, Red Bird, White Bird and Yellow Bird designs. Throwing these around are not going to help you in any way though, as the data inside might just give way to your anger, so toting these in your pocket or notebook bag is the best way to travel.

Made out of high quality rubber, these unique avian friends and a porker would be ideal to stash away all of your crucial information or even family photos, music videos, movies and MP3 files. It does not matter, really, although we would have liked to see the Blue Bird design and see each of these split into three different flash drives magically when you plug it into your computer. Of course, that will not happen, but it would be cute nonetheless. The Angry Birds Flash Drives will retail for £14.99 a pop.
